If you have never placed your faith in Christ as your Savior, that is your present need.

On the Cross, all sins were placed on the humanity of Christ and judged; full payment was made for the sins of mankind.

Salvation is offered freely to each person by simple faith in the finished work of Christ.

He did all the work to satisfy the Righteousness of God; ours is merely to receive it by faith.

That one act of faith, directed toward the Person and Work of Christ, brings eternal life, a permanent relationship with God as His child.

Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved … KJV




The filling of the Spirit is a grace provision that restores a believer to fellowship that had been broken because of sin.

Upon the confession of sin, the believer is now ready to study the Word of God and God the Holy Spirit can make it spiritually discernable.

Scripture reveals, specifically, this grace provision that places us in a posture to learn the Word of God and then apply it.

Only in the filling of the Spirit, is God able to work in us to His glory.

I acknowledged my sin to Thee, And my iniquity I did not hide; I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD"; And Thou didst forgive the guilt of my sin. Selah. NASB

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. NASB

As a believer in Christ, it is imperative that the Word of God be approached with no unconfessed sin in one’s life. the purpose for the coming of Messiah is recorded for us in Scripture

Luke 19:10

19:10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. KJV

while that purpose is demonstrated in time through the Incarnation, it was determined in eternity past in God’s Plan for the ages

how far back is eternity past ? -- the human mind can not comprehend that which is infinity

we do know that the Divine Council (the Godhead) decreed all things in eternity past; human history is just a working out or playing out of that which was decreed

all that is decreed is certain to occur; the Godhead knowing all things

however, remember that man’s free will, given to him by God, is free to act

but God already knows how man will act and has meshed all that into His will and plan

therefore the believer can say with Paul and Peter –

For it is God who causes all things to work together for good to them that love God, to those who are called to His purpose. HRM

For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you NASB

in eternity past all of human history was evident and determined in the mind of God long before man was created

without violating or compromising the free will that God would give mankind upon creation, the Omniscience of God knew all that each individual would do and the decisions that a person would make

in speaking of the antichrist and the rise of the revived Holy Roman Empire during the Tribulation, John tells us that God knew, before creation, the names of those who would believe in Christ and the names of those who would not

And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.KJV

The people living on earth, whose names have not been written before the creation of the world in the book of the living, will all be amazed as they look at the beast. TEV

as God’s Plan unfolds, we see that at the right time, God became flesh and entered the human race

His entrance into human history, was at the specific time determined by the Godhead

the KJV renders this specific time with the words -- “in the fullness of time.”

while God is not limited or affected by time, human history does function in an orderly progression, which we call, time




Galatians 4:4-5

But when the right time finally came, God sent his own Son. He came as the son of a human mother and lived under the Jewish Law,

to redeem those who were under the Law, so that we might become God's sons. TEV

how was man to know God’s right time? -- it would have to be revealed in keeping with the means of revelation in the Old Testament: visions, dreams, prophets, angels, direct utterances from heaven.

God chose to announce the birth through angelic heralds with specific information, so that those individuals, upon hearing the announcement, would know that the Scriptures were being fulfilled with the birth of the Babe in the manger.

from the very onset, the angels identified the humanity of Christ from all other babies born at that time -- it was a most unusual announcement.

Christ was to be wrapped in swaddling clothes

Dr. Luke records this symbolic and prophetically significant account in his gospel




Luke 2:7

2:7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. KJV

and so, it occurred just as promised, and God’s redemptive solution for man’s sin would culminate in the Cross -- the crushing of the serpent’s head

there are two passages that we will examine concerning the Cross -- where two deaths occurred

Isaiah 53:9

53:9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death(s)

the Hebrew word for death is MAVETH (pronounced maw’-veth), and it is in the plural not the singular




this verse is not translated correctly in any of the editions, for it lumps two deaths into one

that confuses the salvation message by focusing on His physical death only, without considering the essential spiritual death which occurred first

sin is not paid for by physical suffering, but by the wrath of God being poured out on Christ for our sins (spiritual death)

first there had to be the spiritual death -- the bearing of our sins in His own body; thus separation from the Father, as the sins of mankind were placed on Christ and judged

then after salvation was accomplished, there was the physical death of Christ

Isaiah and David give us extended accounts of the crucifixion; this is in contrast to the gospel writers who give very little details of the Cross

God placed the earth in darkness as Christ bore our sins on the Cross; so we must go to the Old Testament to see the prophetic description of Calvary

Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?

For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.

He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.

And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.

Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.

He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.

Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. KJV




Isaiah 53 is where the treasurer of Ethiopia was reading on his way back from Jerusalem

it is on that trip back home, that God sent Philip to explain to him what he was reading

it was from that text that Philip presented the Lord Jesus Christ

Acts 8:35

8:35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. KJV

Christ quoted from Isaiah 53 and applied it to Himself

John 12:38

12:38 …that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke, "Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?" NASB




the Apostle Paul also quotes from this chapter

Romans 10:16

10:16 However, they did not all heed the glad tidings; for Isaiah says, " Lord, who has believed our report? " NASB

it should be noted that up to the Middle Ages, there was full acceptance in both Judaism and Christianity that Isaiah 53 was Messianic

later, however, a false interpretation emerged claiming that the passage did not pertain to an individual but spoke collectively of the nation Israel

unfortunately today, Jews do not accept the latter chapters of Isaiah as Scripture (from Isaiah chapter 40 forward)

many Christians do not interpret this passage as referring to Christ, but rather to Israel, as a Servant, or as the believing remnant

the very fact that Christ, Paul, Peter and Luke quote chapter 53, leaves no room to interpret the passage as to one’s own liking

it clearly speaks of the Messiah who would suffer on the Cross and purchase salvation




Isaiah 53:1

53:1 Who hath believed our report?

Isaiah begins by acknowledging that his messages are falling on deaf ears

that is exactly what the Lord said would happen when he called Isaiah to the office of prophet

Isaiah 6:9-10

And He said, "Go, and tell this people: 'Keep on listening, but do not perceive; Keep on looking, but do not understand.'

"Render the hearts of this people insensitive,, Their ears dull, And their eyes dim, Lest they see with their eyes, Hear with their ears, Understand with their hearts, And return and be healed." NASB




Isaiah 53:1b

53:1b … and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?

the arm revealed or bared arm speaks of a mighty endeavor

Isaiah is going to announce the suffering of the Savior in providing salvation

that work -- that of the Father in planning the solution for sin, that of Christ executing the solution and that of the Holy Spirit in revealing the Work of the Cross is pictured as a mighty effort

the work of redemption is so great and infinite in its scope and magnitude, that only God could perform it; man had no solution for his sin problem

Isaiah 53:2

53:2 …for he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground




the prophet gives us a vivid description of the humanity of Christ -- He is a flourishing plant that comes from a root in dry ground

the humanity of Christ was perfect in every way

Luke 2:40

2:40 the Child continued to grow and become strong, increasing in wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him NASB

the dry ground refers to the fact that when Christ came into the world, there no longer was any trace of the Davidic line of kings

the family of David had been cut off and reduced to a life of peasants

53:2b He has no stately form or majesty That we should look upon Him, Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him. NASB

the nation was under the heel of Rome, and spiritually, the people were enslaved to a system of religion that weighed down on them like a yoke for oxen

the Greater Son of David would come into the world born in a manger and not a palace; but God had future plans to highly exalt Him, proclaiming Him not just King of the Jews, but King of Kings and Lord of Lords

Christ in His humanity was the perfect man inwardly and outwardly

however, it is clear that He was quite ordinary looking -- no halo above His head, no mystical aura surrounding Him

the emphasis would not be on His appearance, though obviously He was physically strong; the emphasis, from the very beginning, would be on the spiritual -- the meaning of swaddling clothes, Him questioning the teachers in the synagogue, and preaching the kingdom of God





53:3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. KJV

while man has tried to paint what Jesus looked like, we have no Biblical record to justify any artist’s rendition of Christ

all the paintings and pieces of sculpture of Christ are merely man’s creation from his imagination

the prophet is speaking of the agony of soul that Christ experienced

the message is rejected -- therefore, the Person is rejected since the message is about Him

in His humanity, He suffered the pain of knowing that the very race, through which He came into the world, would reject Him

John tells us of this at the beginning of his gospel




John 1:11

1:11 he came unto his own and his own received him not KJV

we know that our Lord lamented over the future demise of Jerusalem

Luke 13:34

13:34 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, just as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not have it! NASB


53:3 …we hid as it were our faces from him




the nation did not want to hear His message

they did not mind being fed food, but there was not a spiritual hunger for the Messiah as Savior -- religion was entrenched and it would fight to protect its hold over the people


53:3 …he was despised and we esteemed him not

repeatedly His Person is ridiculed; conspiracies formed to execute him

the hatred of the nation and its leadership intensified in its rejection of the message as the time drew nearer for Messiah to go to the Cross

if man could have killed the Christ, he would have; Satan is the one who is behind murder




John 8:44

8:44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. NKJV

Isaiah 53:4

53:4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

though He was God in the flesh, the people and religious leaders esteemed Him only as a miracle worker, a teacher, a prophet

when Christ is esteemed incorrectly, there is no possibility of receiving Him as Savior




Hebrews 12:2

12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. KJV


53:4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

the purpose is stated first: He bore our griefs, our sorrows, our sins, that which separated us from God

He had none of these for Himself -- in His Deity, He is perfection, happiness; in His humanity, He willingly goes to the Cross with inner peace and joy knowing that He is fulfilling the Father’s Plan




Romans 6:23

6:23 …for the wages of sin is death (spiritual death)

the sin nature could only pay off in spiritual death

Mankind was appointed to judgment because he is born spiritually dead

Hebrews 9:27

9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: KJV

this is a reference to spiritual death, not physical death

man comes into the world spiritually dead; if he remains in that condition, he faces judgment

the person who is born again is made spiritually alive and never faces judgment (Rom 8:1)

But God being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, … NASB

For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin, … KJV

But the free gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many.

And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned; for on the one hand the judgment arose from one transgression resulting in condemnation , but on the other hand the free gift arose from many transgressions resulting in justification. NASB

therefore, there is hope, a remedy, that God provides for man’s dilemma of spiritual death

Romans 8:1John 5:24

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

"Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. NASB





53:4 …yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God and afflicted

here is a correct conclusion but for the wrong reasons

those who rejected the Messiah thought that He was getting what was due -- they considered Him to be a blasphemer

God was smiting and afflicting the humanity of Christ, but it was for the purpose of providing salvation and not for Christ’s own wrongdoing -- He had done no wrong, for He was perfect, tempted in every way, yet without sin

for those three hours -- from noon to three o’clock, God poured out on Christ our sins, turned His back on the Son, and emptied the cup of His wrath on the One who had been made sin for us

it was in that agony of soul that He repeatedly screamed out –

Psalm 22:1

22:1 My God, My God, why has thou forsaken Me? KJV




Isaiah 53:5

53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. KJV

this verse speaks of the travail of the soul as the Lord Jesus Christ made Himself the sacrifice for man’s sin

our transgressions -- those thoughts and acts that were contrary to God’s way -- man going against that which God prohibited

God has a way, but man chooses to go his own way -- those decisions to go and live our own way, always result in committing personal sins which originate from the sin nature

Isaiah 53: 5 (contemporary translations -- NASB, NIV)

53:5 …the chastening for our well being fell upon Him NASB

…the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him NIV




sin must be paid for; -- that is the Justice of God

God can have nothing to do with sin for He is Righteous -- Perfect in His Being

man, since he is a sinner, has no remedy within himself to satisfy the Righteousness of God

Romans 5:12

5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned — NASB

Christ, in His humanity, willingly goes to the Cross and bears our sins, and upon Him are laid the punishment and penalty of our sins

because God the Father is satisfied with the payment for sins, man is reconciled to God through faith in the Work of Christ; man is born again, and the image of God is restored in his life

the second birth is necessary, for with the first birth, which is physical, comes spiritual death

with the second birth comes eternal life, with no possibility of judgment

Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him." NIV

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. KJV

And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. KJV





53:5 …with his stripes we are healed KJV

some have erroneously use this verse to say that God must heal physical diseases if you are a Christian

Isaiah is not talking of physical diseases, but of the spiritual disease of sin that has resulted in spiritual death

the Apostle Peter quotes this verse making it clear that the issue is spiritual healing, not physical healing

l Peter 2:24

2:24 and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed. NASB




what kind of healing is Peter talking about? The healing of our transgressions and sins

a person cannot live to righteousness without having a new nature, for the sin nature keeps man enslaved to sin

from the sin nature comes personal sins as well as good human efforts that promote self and leave out God

from the sin nature comes all the tendencies that we have to think and act a certain way, unless our thinking has been transformed to the thinking of Christ

only the believer has the indwelling presence of the Spirit, a new spiritual nature that can relate to God, and the filling of the Spirit, so that he can live a supernatural life

the indwelling presence of the Spirit and filling of the Spirit are for believers only

if the person is an unbeliever, there is only the convicting and convincing ministry of the Holy Spirit for the purpose of bringing him or her to Christ




this verse begins and ends with the word “all”

in the middle of the verse is the word “each”

it is clear that “each” of us is in the “all” of humanity

the human race is called “sheep” -- the most helpless of creatures

facts concerning sheep:

must be cared for continually

have no sense of direction

if rolled over, unable to right itself

must be sheared in order to survive

becomes a fitting picture of humanity without God and without hope

…But God who is rich in mercy lays upon the humanity of Christ the sins of each person, so that all can have eternal life by simple faith in the finished work of Christ on the Cross

Isaiah 53:6

53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one/each to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. KJV




Righteousness demanded perfection; perfection can not relate with imperfection

Justice found a way to satisfy the Righteousness of God -- Christ was made sin for us that we might have the Righteousness of God in Christ

Love motivated the Father to send the Son

the Father is propitiated, satisfied, with the payment for sin

Redemption is completed; the once and for all sacrifice for sin is sufficient for the sins of the world

the issue before mankind is faith alone, in Christ alone man is reconciled to God through faith in Christ and declared NOT GUILTY (justified)

2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. KJV

Isaiah 53:11

53:11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. KJV
