Dear Friends,
Thank you for your gifts to ELCA World Hunger and Lutheran Disaster Response this past year.
Thousands of families in the U.S. and around the world are living new lives by the work you help make possi-ble. With your generous gifts, you are sharing the hope and joy of Jesus each day.
This is a picture of one small family, in one village, in one of the 60 or so countries where we have the opportunity to serve. I’m struck by the joy of this family, despite the hardship of little rain and the challenge to grow enough to take to the market.
This family’s hard work, combined with your gifts, mobilized through the hands of those who serve in the name of Christ, has brought joy. Together, we have become bea-cons of hope and joy in the midst of troubles and challenges today. Thank you for joining this work.
With gratitude, Dan The Rev. Dan Rift, Director ELCA World Hunger and Disaster Appeal Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

SHAPING FUTURES THROUGH FAITH BASED EDUCATION
Messiah’s funeral lunches and receptions are a gift to our members and friends at difficult times. If you have not helped with funeral lunches in the past, would you consider joining our call list now? You can provide a salad or dessert, or offer to help prepare and serve. You don’t have to be available every time. To add your name to the funeral lunch/reception list, or to find out more, please call Marcia Wiedemeier at 319-752-5824. Supper and lunch groups have long been a mainstay of Messiah’s fellowship. Are you interest-ed in joining an existing group or helping form a new group? Have a favorite restaurant you’d like to meet other Messiah members at once a month, or would you like to have a group meet for a meal in homes? Joanne Mohr is happy to help your group get started. To find out more, call her at 319-752-2849.

We are busy learning about the Dinosaurs and their habits of the past through books, short videos, music, fingers plays, sand play digging up bones, water play washing them, play dough, painting scenery, playing with them in the block and puppet centers. We are also doing many winter science experiments with snow (when it comes), water and ice. We have many winter projects deco- rating the rooms and halls showing all our work. Snowpals of many kinds are dancing in our rooms. Starr’s Nature Center Naturalist came to visit and do a penguin activity with the children involving an iceburg, an ocean, fish and them being the
penguin to get to add and subtract (by eating) the fishes jumping into the ocean. Great fun and learning experience. We also participated in the National School Choice Campaign. Each child was given a beautiful scarf and a letter thanking their parents for choosing Messiah Preschool for their child’s first school experience. If you are interested in providing tuition for a preschooler next session or making a donation to the preschool fund, please see Ms. Margie.

A Stewardship Message from Marcia Wiedemeier
Good morning! Are we good stewards of Messiah, its members, our community and our world?
When considering this question, we need to take inventory of the many facets of our ministry and its contributions.
Sometimes I think we take for granted not only the beauty of our church, but the many ways it serves our congregation, our community and our world. We sit in our pew feeling warm and cozy and assume it will be here for us every Sunday.
Our building of brick and mortar isn’t only beautiful, but is home base for many worthwhile organizations and groups that benefit others.
Consider the following ways we provide a haven and service to others in God’s name:
Take Away Hunger feeds the hungry in all parts of our world
Messiah Preschool shapes futures through faith based education.
Piecemakers provide quilts to the needy in far away places
Coptic Christians utilize our space to practice their faith
AlAnon meetings provide hope and understanding to family members affected by substance abuse
P.E.O. meets to enable financial assistance to women furthering their education
Community Action, Salvation Army and Homeless Shelter all benefit from our dona- tions to their cause
Funerals and luncheons, weddings and receptions, and other family celebrations are so easily accommodated by our sanctuary and social hall. And no doubt I’ve left out others.
So you see, Messiah is a vital source of services in God’s name and calls to each of us to commit financially to its future. Please step up and consider how you can be counted in this time of stewardship campaign so we can further the responsible management of Messiah entrusted to our care.
