In addition to the sawing in this project you’ll also
be challenged to apply some surface texturing.
You might choose to chase* a design into thosesurfaces, chemically or electrically etch them or pierce
them. This one is pretty wide open to your thematic
inclinations. You can use the design provided or comeup with your own.
1 Add texture to the face of the plate using an
etching bit or drill bit, but not drilling all the way through the metal. 2
Adhere the pattern to the metal sheet and
using the lines on the template as a guide, cuout rst the exterior of the shape and then
along the lines of the shape’s interior. (See
page 16 for more on sawing.)

Light Switch Plate
ChasIng is a technique similar to embossing
leatherwork. Chisels, punches etc, and specially designed
decorative chasing tools are hammer driven, on a steel
block, into the metal surface leaving their particular shape
in the metal. Chasing is also a forming process because you’re not removing metal you are moving metal. When
metal at the chasing site is displaced it moves out of the
way of the tool’s face to the sides.

3 To create some line work on the face ofthe heart piece, use a chasing tool andhammer. You can use the lines on thepattern as a guide, or create your owndesign.
4 Using the heart shape as a template, drillone hole through the plate where a bolt will go. Secure the pieces together, thenrepeat for the remaining holes.
5 Apply patination. Using some Jack’sBlackener, brush on with a plastic feralbrush. Stop the reaction by either rinsingit off or drying it with a paper towel.
6 Insert one bolt through one hole fromthe front to the back. Thread on a nutand tighten. Repeat for the other holes.
How to Saw - Beyond Metal
Metal is not the only material that’s
sawed in this book. From paper
to plastic, the author will show
the reader the incredible scope of
opportunity for using the jeweler’s
saw to yield results that you couldn’t
get with any other tool.

Metal Artist’s Workbench offers readers with
everything they need to know to use this well-loved
tool by deconstructing the skill into two compo-
nents: understanding exactly how the tool works
and then how to actually use it for maximum
efciency. Following a thorough techniques sec-
tion the reader will be guided through 15 proj-
ects—including pins, pendants, display pieces and
more. In addition to demystifying the saw itself,
the author will give readers adequate information
on the jeweler’s bench pin—the “silent partner”
in the sawing process. Sidebars containing photos
of several established artists’ own bench pins will
offer provocative breaks in the book, as will many
inspiring gallery photos of Thomas’ own work.
Abou Thomas Mann A professional artist for more than 40 years,
Thomas Mann is best known for his “Techno-

New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in 1977 and
has called New Orleans home ever since. In addi-
tion to an aggressive travel schedule to lecture,
teach and exhibit, he also oversees a jewelry studio,
sculpture studio and a retail gallery space, Gallery
I/O. Thomas has appeared on NPR’s Talk of the
Nation, PBS’s “Nightly Business Report,” and,
most recently was featured in PBS’s award-winning

his role as a veteran professional artist to include
a focus on education. He sells a sawing system
through his educational brand, studioFLUX. Visit
