    MetalManual:WhyMetal?by Dave Tate

In October 2002, we sent out

a customer survey. One o the

    questions we asked was, What

products or services would you like

EFS to carry? The number one thing

    requested was powerliting suits

and shirts. At frst, I had no interest

in selling these items because the

majority o our customers are not

    competitive powerliters. In addition,

Ive had nothing but bad luck andpoor service with powerliting gear

since I began this sport more than 20

    years ago.

o my hesitation, Metal decided togo with another American vendor.Later that year, Metal was unhappy

with their sales in America and wasstill interested in having EFS be theirexclusive American vendor. I met withmy sta one last time on this issue anddecided to go ahead or the ollowingreasons:

The perormance and carryoverrom the gear was better thananything I have ever used.

They could make the gear and have

it shipped to us quickly. They use a unique polyester blendthat is unequaled.

EFS and Metal share the samecompany values.

My sta and I decided to puteverything we had on the line, andthe outcome has been better than wethought it would be. Metal gear is

becoming more and more popularacross the world because o its highquality and perormance. Yes, we havevery tough competition, but we eelthat when you have a better product, time will be the ultimate judge.

For example, in a two-yearperiod, I went through more than20 bench shirts just to get one to t

properly! I didnt want to tarnish EFSand our reputation. So even thoughI wanted to help our customers, Ididnt think it would be in our bestinterest to carry powerliting gear.

Several months later, I wascontacted by Metal Sport and Wearand asked i EFS would like to carrytheir suits and shirts. Because theyare based in Finland, I was onlyvaguely amiliar with their companyand didnt want to make a decisionwithout seeing and trying theequipment. We made a date to meetup at the next WPO powerlitingcompetition. When I nally got achance to see the gear, I was veryimpressed with the quality andworkmanship. I told Metal that Iwould have to test the gear beore Imade a nal decision. I took home aMetal Pro Squatter, Pro Bries, and a

Pro Deadliter. I was very happy withthe gears t and perormance. It wasar superior to any other polyestergear that I have ever used.

Now I had to examine the detailso what it would take to get the gearto our warehouse. I had to becomeamiliar with currency exchange rates, import taxes, and the amount oitems I would have to stock to ensureast shipping. Based on my past

experience, I knew we had to stockmost items or next day shipping orhave a system in place that wouldallow an item to be shipped romFinland in about 23 weeks.

It didnt take me long to seethat this was going to be a hugeinvestment and more o a risk than Iwanted to take. It was going to clearall o our operating capital and takeeverything I had saved up. Because

What is the dierence between Metal polyester,Viking material, and Metal denim? The original Metal polyester material is the rst generation

material. It oers excellent rebound, and it is generally easier

to touch or achieve the proper depth when wearing it. This

is the material used in the Metal Pro Squatter, Pro Bries,

and Pro Bencher and the IPF Squatter, V-Type Squatter, Pro

and IPF Deadliter, and the IPF Bencher. This is one o the

strongest polyester materials on the market.

Viking material is the second generation polyester material

oered by Metal. It is thinner but stronger than the original

polyester. It is harder to touch or get to depth, but the trouble

is well worth it because the carryover is much better in a

bench shirt. Viking material in a squat suit oers stopping

power as opposed to the rebound eect provided by the

original Metal polyester. Viking material is used in the Viking

Pro Squatter and Brie, the Viking Pro Bencher, the IPF Viking

Squatter, Viking V-Type Squatter, Viking Bencher and the

Viking X-Type Bencher, and the Viking Deadliter.

Metals denim material is the least orgiving o all the material,

but it will give the greatest pop o the chest. It is only used in

    the Scoop Neck Denim Bencher.

What is the dierence between the Metal IPF

    and Metal Pro Line?

The Metal IPF Line is approved or use by the International

Powerliting Federation (IPF) and is known as single ply gear.

IPF gear is legal in virtually any ederation that allows

equipment. The Metal Pro Line is made up o double plymaterial used together or the ultimate support and

perormance (with the exception o the Metal Pro Deadliter).

What do V-Type and Viking mean?

Without a doubt, this is the question most oten asked here

at EFS about single ply gear. V-Type reers to a stance, or

more accurately, a wide stance and is dened as squatting

with a stance that is wider than shoulder width. Viking reersto Metals second generation polyester material. So you can

have a Metal Squatter, a Metal V-Type Squatter, a Metal Viking

Squatter, and a Metal Viking V-Type Squatter.

How long will it take to reach me ater I placemy order?

We keep most items in stock so they will be ready to ship

within 24 hours. I we are back ordered on a specic item or

the item has to be shipped rom Metal, a 23 week shipping

    time has been standard.

Can I wear Metal in my ederation?

It is best to contact your ederation about this. Federations

are notorious or changing their minds regarding the use o

specic gear. Generally, all o the IPF Metal Line is allowedin any ederation while the Metal Pro Line is allowed in

ederations that allow double ply gear. Once again, check your

    ederation or details.

What kind o carryover should I expect out o

    the gear?

Numbers are hard to give as they vary so much, but we have

seen bench press carryovers ranging rom 40 lbs to 275 lbs.

Experienced liters know that the upper end o the spectrum is

not going to happen right away, but or the beginner, this may

not be apparent. You have to work with your gear and get to

know where your body needs to be at all times. It is also where

    MetalAce Pro

SquatterThe Metal Ace Pro Squatter is arevolutionary new suit that goesarther than any other suit has evergone. A suit can either stop youor give you rebound. It will eitherstop you in the hole or slow you

down and pop you out o the hole.It cant do both. The problem is

many manuacturers think this canbe done.

In the past, manuacturers havelooked at dierent

materials and cuts. But, as Metal oundout, this is only parto the design. Its alsothe reason many suits

stop you hal waydown and then tossyou orward. This isbecause the material has to match

the cut. However, the way thethread pulls is also very important. The ront o the Ace squatter hasits threads pulled vertically. Thisallows you to sit back and not bepulled hard across the ront. Theback o the suit uses a dierentmaterial blend and has its threads

pulling horizontally or maximumrebound. When this is combinedwith a new crotch design, a muchthicker material than in the ProSquatter, and Velcro straps, you arelet with a squat suit that actuallypushes you back and pushes yourknees out as you squat down.

Wow! This is thenext level suit handsdown. I you are amedium to wide stancesquatter and are usingsomething else, you aremissing at least 100 lbson your squat. Its that

    good. 1107 was cake.!

MetalProSquatterThe Metal Pro Squatter is a doubleply polyester squat suit that is

made or wide stance squatters. It is made to give unbelievablesupport throughout the entirelit, but it excels because o theincredible explosion in the bottomo the squat. It has become themost popular suit in all ederations

allowing double ply material. Thematerial is thick and durable, and

out o all o the Pro Squat gear, thissuit is the easiest to learn. The suithas been used by beginners as wellas advanced liters and is also greator sumo deadliting.

The Metal Pro Squatter needsto t snug in the legs and very

tight in the hips, and it should becomortable but snug in the straps. Most people cannot get the strapsup by themselves though. For thesuit to work optimally, the key isthe hips so be sure that this area istight. Dont worry i the stomachseems a little big and baggy as thiswill not aect perormance. When

trying on and testing the size o asquat suit, be sure to wear the bries

that you wear when squatting. This will aect the sizing o thesuit and allow you to make a betterjudgment on the t.

    I like the Metal Pro

Take all the attributes o the Metal

Ace Pro Squatter with the excep-tion o the Velcro straps and youhave the Metal Ace Pro Bries. They have the threads runningvertically in the ront and hori-zontally in the back, plus the new, improved stitching in the crotcharea that pushes your knees outand allows you to sit back withease. Imagine the support and car-ryover potential i you paired thesebries with your current squat suit,

or better yet, with a Metal Ace ProSquatter.

    Metal VikingPro Bries

The Metal Viking Pro Briesare the brie o choice i you arelooking or something to keepyou rom going too ar into thehole. Made o the Metals Vikingmaterial and coupled with thedouble ply thickness, they areexcellent when paired under aMetal Viking Pro Squatter or acanvas squat suit.

    Metal ProBencher

The Metal Pro Bencher comes with

an open back that can be closedwith Velcro straps. Usually onlythe bottom one or two straps oVelcro are attached, and the othersare either cut o completely or arelet undone. Many o the experi-enced liters will get a shirt to t inthe arms and shoulders and thenhave the chest taken in one inch. This makes the shirt very tight andwill make getting weights to touchmore dicult, but it also gives an

incredible amount o power o othe bottom.

    Metal Bash ProBencher

The Metal Bash Pro Bencheris also a double ply, open-backshirt. However, it is cut dierentlythan other Metal Pro style shirts. It has the arms cut in the rontat a 90o angle. The arms are alsoextra long to acilitate bunchingthe material behind the tricepsor some extra lockout power.Generally speaking, the Metal BashPro Bencher is suited to a literwith a higher arch. It also tends toincrease the area that weight canbe touched and still get a goodspring rom the shirt. The touchspot o the shirt is about 34inches. The shirt is suited or boththe beginner and the advancedliter because the major dierenceis not material strength but thestyle in which the liter executesthe lit.

The Metal Viking bench shirt is amazing. I just put it on, break itin, and go. Unlike most o the other shirts on the market, the grooveis where I want it to be, not where the shirt wants it to be. And therebound this shirt gives is like no other! Chris Ox Mason

    MetalViking

ProBencherThe Viking Pro Bench Shirt is adouble ply polyester bench shirt thatis made rom Viking material. TheViking material is a unique polyesterblend that has been described ashaving attributes o both a denim

and polyester shirt. In other words,it gives great strength o o thechest much like a denim shirt butcontinues to support and help thelockout as with most polyester shirts.

This shirt comes with an openback that can be closed with Velcrostraps. It isnt recommended orthe absolute beginner as the Vikingmaterial is much stronger, thus

making it that much harder totouch. However, like the Metal ProBencher, the groove o the shirt isthe sternum or upper abdominalarea. Usually only the bottom oneor two straps o Velcro are attached, and the others are either cut ocompletely or are let undone. Manyo the experienced liters will get ashirt to t in the arms and shouldersand then have the chest taken in

one inch. This makes the shirt verytight and will make getting weightsto touch very dicult, but it alsogives an incredible amount o powero o the bottom. This is onlyrecommended or very experiencedliters because having a smaller chestpanel requires perect orm andtechnique.

    MetalScoop

NeckDenimBencherIt has taken three years to nally

come up with a denim bench

shirt that we here at EFS could

stand behind. The Metal ScoopNeck Denim Bencher is it. It is

    a double ply, open-back shirt,

and its not or the aint o heart.

Dicult to touch and even more

dicult to master, this shirt is

the king o the carryover. As the

name implies, the neck is scooped

unlike our polyester shirts. It also

eatures a lowered arm angle to

create a harness eect on the backo the triceps. The groove is low

like all denim bench shirts. Even

though this is not an easy shirt to

touch in, it is a suitable beginner

shirt because it can be ordered

    one size larger than normally

    recommended. Obviously, it is

    excellent or the advanced liter

    looking or an edge.

    MetalPro

DeadliterThe Metal Pro Deadliter is a singleply polyester suit, not a double

ply like all o the other Metal Pro

gear. However, it does have an

extra seam in the quad that the

IPF Deadliter lacks. It is designed

or the conventional puller. As was

    mentioned previously, the Metal

Pro Squatter is the suit o choiceor the sumo deadliter. It is made

    rom Metals original polyester. The

Pro Deadliter works by pulling up

through the crotch area and giving

a pop o the foor. The suit should

t tight in the legs and hips but

nothing like one would expect rom

a squat suit. The perormance o

    the Metal Deadliter really begins

once the straps are pulled up.Ideally, one should be able to get

one strap on alone and need just

a little help with the second strap.

I the straps are too dicult to get

up, it will not be possible to get

down to the bar. The suit will give

an incredible amount o pull in the

    crotch and is very uncomortable

    especially when in the starting

position o the deadlit. It should

not be easy to get to the bar!

    Metal IPFSquatter

The Metal IPF Squatter is a single

The suit should t verytight everywhere but especiallyin the hip and buttock area. Thissuit is ideal or both beginners andadvanced liters.

    Metal IPF V-Type Squatter

The Metal IPF V-Type Squatter isthe wide stance version o the IPFSquatter. Like the IPF Squatter, it isdesigned to spring the liter out o thehole and accommodate a liter witha shoulder width or wider stance. The V-Type Squatter should t tighteverywhere but, again, especially inthe hips and buttocks. This suit is anexcellent choice or both beginners

Metal IPFViking V-TypeSquatterThe IPF Viking V-Type Squatter is a

single ply polyester squat suit maderom Viking material. It is designedor a liter with a shoulder width orwider stance who likes his or her suitto stop them in the hole. Like theIPF Viking Squatter, it is not or thebeginner because o the diculty inreaching depth with the Viking mate-rial. I you dont know how the suit issupposed to t by now, there may bebigger problems. Based on eedbackrom numerous customers, the IPFViking V-Type is not nearly as popu-

lar or sumo deadliting, althoughtechnically it can be done. Generally, the material is too sti to give a goodpop o the foor.

    Metal IPFBencher

The Metal IPF Bencher is asingle ply polyester bench shirt. It is a closed back shirt that doesnot have a stretchy back. It issuited or a bencher who doesnot tuck the elbows. The grooveis around the nipple line becauseo this. The Metal IPF Bencher isdesigned to t extremely tight inthe arms, chest, and shoulders. It

is o paramount importance thatthe shirt be worn tight in orderto maximize perormance. Interms o material strength, this isa beginner shirt, as it is easier totouch in this material than withthe Viking material.

Metal IPFViking BencherThe Metal IPF Viking Bencher is asingle ply polyester bench shirt made

TheViking material makes i more di-cult to touch but does give morepop than the original Metal polyestermaterial. Like the IPF Bencher, thesleeves are cut or the elbows out styleo benching, and the groove is aroundthe nipple line. Because it is harder totouch, this shirt is recommended ora liter with some shirt experience. As with all single ply gear, the shirt

should be worn very tight in order tomaximize perormance.

    Metal IPFViking X-Type

BencherThe IPF Viking X-Type Bencheris similar to the IPF VikingBencher, single ply with a stretchyback but with a very notabledierence. The dierence is thatthe IPF Viking X-Type Benchereatures sleeves that are at analmost 90o angle to the ronto the shirt. This arm angle is

preerred by liters with a biggerarch and a hard elbow tuck. Likethe IPF Viking Bencher, the IPFViking X-Type Bencher is nota beginner shirt. A tight ttingViking shirt is very dicult totouch in, but the carryover isworth it.

The best way to do thisis to have your partner pull on the back o the shirt while you perorm aswimming motion with the arm. Your partner may have to brace one ohis arms on your upper back to give him better leverage.

Step 2Now that your shoulders are in the shirt, attach the Velcro straps on theback o the shirt very lightly. You do not want these to be tight. Usually, the bottom two straps are the only ones that are astened.

tep 3Put your belt on. It should be loose at this point.

    tep 4

Have your partner stand in ront o you, and hold your arms out in rono you, similar to Frankensteins monster. Now cross them so that thechest plate o your shirt develops shirt cleavage. This is the excess matrial in the chest area that will develop once you cross your arms.

tep 5With your arms crossed, have your partner tug on the bottom o your shirt. This

    will eliminate the shirt cleavage.

tep 6Once the cleavage is gone, your partner should hold the bottom o yourshirt taut. At this point, arch your lower and upper back and uncross

your arms. Pull your arms back as i you were doing a rear lateral. Yourupper back, lats, and chest should be similar to the position that you want

to be in when bench pressing. The shirt should be very tight in your chestand shoulders.

tep 7With your partner holding the bottom o your shirt, have someone elsetighten your belt. This will keep the shirt in place. Make sure the belt is

very tight. You will have to suck your stomach in to achieve this.

    tep 8

Once the shirt is in position, have your partner adjust the shouldersagain. You do not want to pull them as high as they were in the beginningbut just enough to be comortable. This will vary rom person to personand in time, you will know exactly where you want the shirt. Rememberthat everyone will like their shirt pulled down a little dierently thanwhat is shown in the picture. The picture shown is a very loose shirt, andit is not pulled down as much as possible.

The Metal IPF V-Type Squatter is a great suit! I love the way

it cinches up when I am about 2 inches above parallel. Thelearning curve on it is not very dicult. The key is to have

a wide stance so that it has the opportunity to work. I really

eel that it keeps my back straight and lightens the load. I will

continue to set PRs in it and look orward to my next contest

    in it! -Tim Thomas

The Metal Viking Pro Bencher gives me support and rebound

like no other shirt that Ive ever tried. Also, the Metal ProDeadliter is awesome. I highly recommend this gear to anyone

that is serious about getting a bigger total.

    -J.L. Holdsworth (775 lb bench)

So ar Ive had great results with my Metal gear and have

been particularly amazed at my bench progress in the shirt.

Hearing other liters at meets talk about getting 2540 pounds

out o competitors single ply shirts and then getting multipleso this out o mine makes me think the right decision has been

made. Getting that much out o a shirt while still being able

to hit the groove easily with a low learning curve, makes it a

winner. Goals that I didnt expect to hit or a long time have

already allen, and Im looking orward to where some o the

new Viking shirts will take me. -Mark OShea

I have been using the Metal gear since EFS rst put it out tothe public, and I love it. I wouldnt use any other gear.

The Metal Pro Deadliter outperorms every deadlit suit Ive

ever worn, and Ive worn just about every one that has everbeen made. The suit is not only the best-made suit Ive ever

seen, but it gives me an amazing spring rom the foor.

-Chuck Vogelpohl, WPO World Record Holder

I just recently started using the Metal Pro Squatter and love

it. I usually put the bries on rst, do our sets with them, and

then put the squat suit on ater. I do a couple o sets with the

straps down, and I also roll up the legs about hal an inch to

allow me to sit back in the suit a lot easier. By rolling up thelegs, the suit doesnt throw you orward, and it allows you to

hit depth much easier. I also like when the straps are up high

on my traps and as close to my neck as possible because this

allows me to get my shoulders back and squeezed together

when I grip the bar. This allows me to arch my back and not be

hunched over when I lit! -Shaun Roach

The Metal Pro Squatter and the Metal Pro Deadliter are

by ar the best suits I have ever worn. The squat suit gives

an amazing explosion out o the hole and carried me all theway through. This suit and the Metal Pro Bries give me an

incredible edge in every meet I do.

-Travis Mash, WPO World Record Holder

The Metal Pro Deadliter is incredible. I have yet to nd

a better suit or see a manuacturer with better quality

That Metal Viking shirt is awesome. Its by ar the best shirt

I have had on. How ever strong I can get, my lockout is what I

will bench. It gives a bunch o o the chest. -Jason Adams

I just recently ordered a Metal V-Type Squatter rom you guys.

I am a very wide stance squatter and had originally used a

competitors suit. As you probably know, this other suit was a

pain in the ass to get on and would throw my entire body orward.

Plus, the competitors suit is not made or wide stance squatters.

This is what prompted me to get a Metal V-Type Squatter. The rst

time I tried it on, it went on in about 30 seconds, and I didnt use

baby powder or suit slippers. The next thing I noticed is that it

automatically made my legs fare outwards a lot more (like I got o

a horse or something), and it makes you stand wider.

Another good thing I like about the suit is that the legs are very

tight, especially in the hips where the majority o the injuries occur

in wide stance squatters. I compete in the IPF, so I cant use groove

bries. However, the V-Type acts as groove bries in that it squeezes

the hips in place and barely allows you to break parallel. So i you

load up a new max, youll break parallel perectly. The next thing

I like about it is the spring I get rom it. Even on my DE squat day,

I use it with the straps down. As soon as I get o the box, I justexplode right up. Another good point about this suit is that Im a

sumo deadliter, and all I need is the one suit. I dont have to mess

around with other suits. So all in all, Im very impressed with this

suit. It doesnt take much time at all to break it in, and it is an ideal

suit or wide stance squatters and sumo deadliters.

I have been powerliting or nearly our years, and the bench

shirt that I have used has been the [competitors] doubledenim. I have had this shirt modied at the tailor ve times.

This has allowed me to use 585 lbs on the two-boards. Ater

receiving the Viking Pro, the only modication that was made

was cutting the collar in the back. I still hit 585 lbs on the

two-board. The shirt is so easy to use, and the power o the

material, I believe, is unrivaled. I will continue training with

this shirt and hope to make big gains in the uture. Thank you

or all your advice and support. -Andy Rozewicz

My training partner and I picked up some Metal Gear

recently. We have the 80 cm wrist wraps. Unbelievable, they

hurt like a bitch when you pull them on right, but they put

20 lbs on my bench overnight and countless pounds on our

max eort lits overall. They not only aid our benches but also

alleviate wrist pain when squatting. Just another reason why

we are dedicated ollowers and supporters o your company.-Sean Sparandero

Im pretty new to using supportive gear, but the Metal Pro

Bries are just amazing. They have great support and spring

out o the hole. I really like the high cut too as they are easy

to lock in with a belt. I tried using a pair o [competitor] bries

but just couldnt stand them. The cut was all wrong. Seemed

like they hurt more than they helped, but not so with the

Metal. The only draw back is getting the things on, but that is

easy to deal with. Damn well worth the eort!

Where has Metal been all o our careers? Im a very wide-ooted

squatter and purchased the Metal Pro Squatter with the helpo Jim Wendler or sizing. It worked perectly rom the very rst

attempt! The most impressive thing was the comort. All o my past

suits hurt and cut everywhere, but I can sit down with the straps

up and actually breathe. The support in the hips rom this suit is

incredible! I have never had the condence in other suits that I

have in this one. The material seems like it will last longer than my

liting and without much stretching. -Alan Hunt

I have a Metal Pro Deadlit suit. The pros o the suit are that itsvery well constructeda tough suit. Its designed in such a way

that it is impossible (or me) to round my back at the start o the

lit. I eel totally condent pulling in this suit. There is only one con

and that is that I still can barely get down to the bar. When I set

my grip, I eel like my hips are too high and my knees are not bent

enough. I I cant get it to relax any more and get down better, I

will look into having a hal inch or inch added to the straps. Getting

into the suit is no problem, and I can do this alone. You will want

to seat yoursel and make certain that you have pulled the legs

up as high as you can. They will be very tight in the crotch but not

so uncomortable as to interere with your concentration. This is

my rst deadlit suit. I have a competitors squat suit but ater

using my Metal Pro Deadlit suit and noting the heavy material

and quality o construction, I am leaning toward getting a Metal

    Squatter.

I also purchased the Metal bries and have been breaking them in

or the last week (only use them to squat). I had previously been

using groove bries, but the Metal bries are ar superior. Pros:

Heavier gauge material gives super support to my hips. The highwaist lets me lock them in place with my belt without having to put

my squat suit on. Cons: Havent seen any yetI love them.

Ater using a canvas squat suit, I switched to a Metal Pro

Squatter. The Metal allows you to move a little more; your hips canbreathe. In the canvas suit, I squatted 570 at 165 lbs. With the

Metal Pro Squatter, my total rose to 605 at 165 lbs and 650 at

181 lbs. You can also deadlit in the Metal Pro Squatter. The suit

does it all. I am looking to get the Metal Pro Bries and a Viking Pro
