Introduction to Anti-Vortex Outlets

The performance of AV outletsaccelerates as the depth of water atthe outlet or rainfall intensityincreases. The unique high flowperformance of Harmer Roof AVoutlets demands that each outlet isconnected to a dedicated or individualrainwater stack. AV outlets should beused for securing optimumperformance when connected toindividual downpipes, and not as partof a managed rainwater system.

Harmer Roof AV Vertical Spigot rainwateroutlets are designed for use with flatroof structures using either insitu castconcrete, timber and lightweight metaldeck construction. Harmer Roof outletsare ideal for connection to continuouswaterproofing systems using single plymembranes, mastic asphalt or highperformance built up felt.

Materials

Harmer Roof AV Vertical Spigot outletsare available in cast aluminium orgunmetal. Gunmetal outlets should bespecified for copper or lead-cladroofs,or slate roofs using copper nails.

Aluminium outlets are cast in LM6aluminium silicon alloy to BS 1490: 1988.

Gunmetal outlets are the same designas aluminium but are cast in 85/5/5/5leaded gunmetal to BS EN 1982: 1999 -CC491K.

Foamed insulation is available as anoption for both aluminium andgunmetal vertical spigot outlets.

Connection to Pipework

Vertical Spigot outlets are suitable fordirect connection to:

■ Cast iron pipework to EN 877 andBS 416: 1973 with appropriatecoupling.

■ HDPE pipework with appropriatecoupling.

■ PVC O-ring socketed pipe to BS 4514: 1983 (300, 400 and 600outlets only).

Grates

Harmer AV rainwater outlets aredesigned to receive either domical orflate grates. Flat grates should be usedif the outlet occurs in an area which issubject to pedestrian traffic. Thesegrates are also designed for use ininverted roof constructions, wherepaving slabs on special Harmer pavingslab supports are used to ballast theinsulation. Rainwater drains betweenthe open joints of the paving to theconcealed outlets beneath.

Spigots are sized to suit nominaldiameter pipework shown in thetable below

Connection to Pipework

Vertical Screw outlets have a femalesocket with parallel thread to BS 21: 1985for direct connection to threaded tubeconforming with BS 1387:1985. This tubeis supplied with BS 21: 1985 taper malethread which ensures a completelywatertight joint when screwed home intothe socket outlet.

Screw outlets are particularlyrecommended where a connection to theoutlet occurs within the thickness of aconcrete slab. In such cases, a threadedconnection will create a completely gas-tight seal within the slab.

Harmer Roof AV screw outlets can beconnected to socketed and socketless castiron pipework, HDPE pipework and PVCpipework by means of the Harmer Roofscrew threaded adaptor with appropriatecoupling. (See pages 6 and 26).

Grates

Harmer AV rainwater outlets are designedto receive either domical or flate grates.Flat grates should be used if the outletoccurs in an area which is subject topedestrian traffic. These grates are alsodesigned for use in inverted roofconstructions, where paving slabs onspecial Harmer paving slab supports areused to ballast the insulation. Rainwaterdrains between the open joints of thepaving to the concealed outlets beneath.

Retro-Gulley OutletHarmer Roof AV Retro-Gulley outletsare designed to fit within the existingoutlet and pipework of the roof whichis being upgraded.

The use of AV increases flowperformance at the outlet locationregardless of pipe diameter downsizingby introduction of the retropipe.

There is no need to remove the oldrainwater outlet.

Because of minimal disturbance andthe ease with which the Retro-Gulley isfitted, it represents an extremely cost-effective and efficient solution to flatroof upgrading.

Materials

The outlet body is in diecast LM6aluminium silicon alloy to BS 1490: 1988,and incorporates a welded 300mmaluminium tail pipe. The tail pipe, cut tothe required length, is simply insertedthrough the existing outlet, into existingpipework, and sealed by means of theHarmer Roof AV special multi-fin pipeseal. This seal creates a watertightjunction between existing pipework andthe Retro-Gulley tail pipe.

The outlet body’s wide fixing flangeincorporates concentric grooves whichenhance the bond with roofing felts orasphalt.

An LM6 aluminium silicon clampingring, also has a ridged under-surfacefor improved bond with roofingmembranes.

Two sealable ports in the outlet body aredesigned for injection of PU foam to fillthe void between old and new outlet.

Connection to Pipework

The Retro-Gulley may be used for anytype of warm roof refurbishment andwith any flat roof waterproofingsystem. 75mm and 100mm pipeworkoptions are available, and willaccommodate variations on pipeinternal diameter from PVC through tocast iron pipe systems.

The AV Retro-Gulley has been designedin conjunction with the Flat RoofingContractors Advisory Board.

Anti-Vortex Outlets

Multi-Gulley OutletHarmer Roof AV Multi-Gulley outlets aredesigned to provide multidirectionaldrainage. Rotated on site, theinterchangeable spigot pipe allows forany angled outflow from vertical tohorizontal. This flexibility also affordseasier alignment of pipe systems.

Interchangeable spigots lock onto thesingle size outlet body, yet enableconnections to 75mm or 100mmpipework to be made. The special sumpdesign of the outlet body works inconjunction with the anti-vortex grateto provide optimum rainwatermovement. The Multi-Gulley has beendesigned in close co-operation withthe Flat Roofing ContractorsAdvisory Board. The fixing designextends the use of the Multi-Gulleyto built-up roofing, single ply andmastic asphalt waterproofing.

Materials

Harmer Roof AV Multi-Gulley outlets areonly available in cast aluminium.

Introduction to Detail Outlets

Main CharacteristicsThe Harmer Roof Detail range includesoutlets to cover all the awkwarddetailing situations that occur inbuilding design and in refurbishment.

Harmer Roof Detail outlets incorporateall the key features inherent in theAlumasc design approach to trouble-free flat roof drainage:

■ Integral and generously propor-tioned sump ensures an adequatehead of water for a steady flowinto the rainwater pipe.

■ Clamp fixing of the waterproofmembrane to the sides of the sumpcompletely eliminates any risk ofleakage through capillary action orback pressure.

■ Elimination of flashings meansthere is nothing which might reducethe effective bore of the rainwaterpipe and restrict the flow of water.

■ Connection to all standard sizes ofpipework.

Areas of ApplicationHarmer Roof Detail includes outletsspecially designed for the followingsituations:

■ Spigot or Screw threaded aluminiumoutlets cast in LM6 aluminium alloyfor connection to drainage pipeworkat 45º and 90º.

■ Two-way screw threaded outletscast in LM6 aluminium alloy forconnection to pipework through aparapet. Two-way outlets can beinstalled to provide either verticalor horizontal take-off, and areparticularly suitable for parapettype applications.

■ Balcony spigot outlets cast in LM6aluminium alloy for balconydrainage or similar applications.Supplied with a flat grate thebalcony outlet is ideal for use inareas of pedestrian access. Gratescan be hole punched to receive 50,75 or 100mm diameter rainwaterdown pipes.

■ Gulley spigot outlets cast in LM6aluminium alloy for narrow gutterand gulley drainage where an outletnarrower than the standard AVoutlet is required.

■ Screw threaded car park andservice deck drains cast in LM6aluminium alloy for drainagerequirements in multi-level car parkand utility areas.

Connection to PVC O-ring socketed pipeto BS 4514: 1983 can be made by meansof a proprietary post-formed socket. Thesocket is preformed onto the PVCpipework and then heat-shrunk over thespigot of the outlet with an O-ring inposition. However a simpler, and thuspreferred solution in such cases, is to usea Harmer Roof Detail 45º Screw outletwith Harmer Roof Screw Thread Adaptor.

Detail Outlets

Two-Way OutletHarmer Roof Detail Two-Way outletsare designed for applications where anangle is formed by the intersection ofvertical and horizontal surfaces (forexample, where a balcony or roofmeets a parapet wall). They can beinstalled to provide either vertical orhorizontal take-off.

Two types are available, the regularTwo-Way and the mini Two-Way outlet.The latter is specially designed forconnection to 50mm pipework insituations where the drainagerequirement is small, such as domesticbalconies.

Materials

Two-Way outlets are available in castaluminium or gun metal. Gunmetaloutlets should be specified for copperor lead-clad roofs and for connection tocopper pipework. Two-way outlets aresupplied with screw connection only.

Aluminium outlets are cast in LM6aluminium silicon alloy to BS 1490: 1988.

Gunmetal outlets are the same design asaluminium but are cast in 85/5/5/5 leadedgunmetal to BS EN 1982: 1999 - CC491K.

Connection to Pipework

Two-Way outlets have a female socketwith parallel thread to BS 21: 1985 fordirect connection to threaded tubeconforming with BS 1387: 1985. Thistube is supplied with BS 21: 1985 tapermale thread which ensures acompletely watertight joint whenscrewed home into the socket outlet.

Screw outlets are particularlyrecommended where a connection tothe outlet occurs within the thicknessof a concrete slab. In such cases athreaded connection, achieved by useof a Harmer Roof Screw ThreadAdaptor, will create a completely gas-tight seal within the slab.

Harmer Two-Way outlets can beconnected to socketed and socketless castiron pipework, HDPE pipework and PVCpipework by means of the Harmer RoofScrew Threaded Adaptor with appropriatecoupling. (See pages 6 and 26).

Balcony OutletHarmer Roof Detail Balcony outlets aredesigned for use with concrete balconystructures and are fitted with flat gratesfor safe drainage in pedestrian accessedareas. The gratings of these outlets canbe punched out to receive an incomingrainwater pipe from above thusproviding for local as well as continuousdrainage in series. Harmer Balconyoutlets are ideal for connection to singleply membranes, mastic asphalt or highperformance built up felt.

Materials

Harmer Roof Detail Balcony outlets areavailable in cast aluminium orgunmetal. Gunmetal outlets should be specified for copper or lead-clad roofsfor connection to copper pipework.

Flat grates can be supplied with holepunched out to receive 50, 75 or100mm nominal bore rainwaterdownpipes. If pre-punched grates arerequired, add /2H, /3H or /4H to thecode reference when ordering.Alternatively, the hole can be cut onsite by the installer.

The Balcony outlet can be used with anextension piece. (See pages 24 and 25).

Car Park OutletHarmer Roof Detail Car Park outletshave been specially designed for instal-lation in parking decks for cars andlight commercial vehicles (ie, wherethere is a maximum single wheelloading of 1 tonne and total weight ofapproximately 255 kg/m2).

The screw body is available in twotypes, flanged and flangeless. The latteris for use in situations that do notrequire a waterproof membrane or seal.

Materials

Car Park outlets consist of analuminium vertical screw body withraising ring, two clamping rings andstandard flat grate.

Connection to Pipework

The outlet body has a female socketwith parallel thread to BS 21: 1985 fordirect connection to threaded tubeconforming with BS 1387: 1985.

Where the outlet is to be connected tosocketed or socketless cast ironpipework, or PVC pipework, Alumascwill supply a special ABS adaptor in alength to suit the thickness of the deckconstruction. The adaptor is taper-threaded externally at one end to BS 21:1985, and chamfered at the other endto BS 4514: 1983 spigot dimensions.

The adaptor spigots are suitable fordirect connection to:

■ Cast iron pipework to BS 416: 1973or EN 877.

■ PVC O-ring socketed pipe to BS4514: 1983.

Harmer Roof Detail Car Park outlets aredesigned for installation into eitherinsulated or uninsulated decks.

Grate Extension PiecesGroup 1This group of Grate Extension Pieces isused with the following types of outlet:

Connection to Outlet

The Grate Extension Pieces will acceptdomical grates and terrace grates butnot standard flat grates. Terrace Gratescan be used only in connection withgrate extension pieces. The extensionpieces can be cut down if necessary tosuit the thickness of paving or tiles.This can be done easily on site with ahacksaw, or, if required, extensionpieces can be trimmed prior to delivery.

Grate Extension Pieces are suppliedwith one set of stainless steel extensionstuds per outlet.

Grate Extension PiecesGroup 2This group of Grate Extension Pieces isused with the following types of outlet:

■ Detail Balcony.

Terrace GratesTerrace Grates are designed for installation in terrace tiles or brickpaviors. They should be used inconnection with Grate Extension Pieceswhich raise the Terrace Grate to thelevel of the paved surface. The radiusslots in the grate allow for movementthrough 90º permitting adjustment tosuit surrounding paving prior to finaltightening.

Accessories

Screw Thread to SpigotAdaptorThe Screw Thread Adaptor has beendesigned to facilitate the connectionof Harmer Roof AV and Detail screw-threaded metal rainwater outlets toPVC pipework. The adaptor is suitablefor connection with all types of pipesystems and presents an economicalternative to using a short length ofsteel gas tube to BS 1387: 1985 in thecase of cast iron socketed orsocketless systems. (See page 6).

Materials

The Screw Thread Adaptor, made ofABS plastic, is supplied in 305mmlengths, taper-threaded externally atone end to BS 21: 1985 and chamferedat the other end to BS 4514: 1983spigot dimensions. Sizes are availableto suit 50, 75, 100 and 150mm nominalbore pipework.

Connection to Pipework

The Screw Thread Adaptor is screwedinto the base of the outlet using a ptfetape to obtain a gas-tight seal. Thespigot end of the adaptor can then beconnected to the pipe socket. Ifnecessary, the length of the spigot end ofthe adaptor can be reduced by cutting asrequired with a fine toothed saw.

The spigots of Harmer Roof ScrewThread Adaptors are suitable for directconnection to:

■ Cast iron pipework to EN 877 andBS 416: 1973.

■ HDPE pipework with appropriatecouplings.

■ PVC O-ring socketed pipe to BS 4514: 1983.

Metal Deck SupportPlatesHarmer Roof pressed Metal SupportPlates are recommended for use whereHarmer Roof metal and insulatedrainwater outlets are installed in metaldeck roof construction. They aredesigned to provide a secure and stablejunction between roof deck andrainwater outlet.

The Support Plates incorporate pre-punched holes for ease of fixing. Twosizes are available. The 335 x 335mmplate will suit 50 and 75mm metaloutlets and all insulated outlets. The415 x 415mm plate is designed for all100 and 150mm metal outlets.

Materials

The Support Plates are manufacturedfrom 1.5mm (16 gauge) steel sheet,finished in red oxide. They are suitablefor installation in all types of metaldeck roofing.

Note: Screw Tread Adpators are available with alonger tail for use in deep slabs. Add L tocode reference and state required length.
