Metallic BondingUnit Essential Question:
How does atomic structure determine the chemical and physical properties of matter?
What information can be gathered from the periodic table? Presentation Objectives:
§ Identify the basic properties of metals. § Explain how the bonding in metals creates these basic properties.
What Do They Have In Common?
• Metals have special properties because of the way they bond. • Conductive • Ductile • Malleable
Able to conduct heat and electricity.
Able to be drawn into a thin wire.Able to hammered into a shape without breaking or cracking.
• These properties come from metallic bonding.
Q1
Metallic Bonding• When metal atoms bond, atoms are so tightly
packed together that valence electrons are shared among several atoms.• Most common model used to describe metallic
bonding is called the sea of electrons model. • Valence electrons are free to move around.
Q2 Metallic Bonding• If the electrons are removed from the atoms, then what
remains behaves like a positive ion. • What remains is an atomic core which includes the
nucleus and inner shells.
• Even though they act like ions, doesn’t mean that they are. • Metals are made up of atoms, NOT ions.
Q3
Explain Your Behavior
• Freely floating valence electrons... • Can move easily so that means metals can easily conduct
electricity and heat. • Make it so that individual atoms aren’t bonded to each
other so they are able to slide past each other when a force is exerted, which means metals are ductile and malleable.
