Metaphor:Metaphor – A metaphor is a direct comparison between two seemingly unrelated things. A metaphor always says that one thing IS another thing ( even though we know they are very different). For example: “Life is a process of becoming . . ." - Anaïs Nin

"No man is an island" —John Donne

Simile:A figure of speech in which two essentially unlike things are compared, often in a phrase introduced by ‘like’ or ‘as’. For example:

“Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get"

– Forrest Gump

"My love is like a red, red rose." — Robert Burns

“That hat looks, like . . . totally awesome on you!`` – Ben Medd

God money's not looking for the cure.God money's not concerned with the sick amongst the pure.God money let's go dancing on the backs of the bruised.God money's not one to choose.you know who you are.

Simile vs. Metaphor It’s a real ‘battlefield’!

Page 9: Metaphor and Simile

We are youngheartache to heartache we standNo promises no demandsLove is a battlefield.

We are strongno-one can tell us we're wrongSearching our hearts for so longBoth of us knowingLove is a battlefield.

You're begging me to gothen making me stay -Why do you hurt me so bad?It would help me to knowdo I stand in your wayOr am I the best thing you've had?Believe mebelieve meI can't tell you why

But I'm trapped by your loveand I'm chained to your side.We are youngheartache to heartache we standno promises, no demandslove is a battlefield

When I'm losing controlwill you turn me away or touch me deep inside'And when all this gets oldwill it still feel the same? There's no way this will die

But if we get much closerI could lose control

And if your heart surrenders you'll need me to hold.We are youngheartache to heartache we stand

Love is a Battlefield – Pat Benatar

Battlefield Jordin Sparks (performer)

Don't try to explain your mindI know what's happening hereOne minute it's loveAnd suddenly it's like a battlefield

One word turns into a warWhy is it the smallest things that tear us down?My world's nothing when you don'tI'm not here without a shieldCan't go back now

Both hands, tied behind my back with nothingOh no, these times when we climb so fast to fall againWhy we gotta fall for it now

I never meant to start a warYou know I never wanna hurt youDon't even know what we're fighting for

Why does love always feel like a battlefieldA battlefield, a battlefield? Why does love always feel like a battlefieldA battlefield, a battlefield? Why does love always feel like

Can't swallow our prideNeither of us wanna raise that flagIf we can't surrender then we both gonna loseWhat we had, oh no

Both hands tied behind my back with nothingOh no, these times when we climb so fast to fall again. I don't wanna fall for it now

Chorus

We could pretend that we are friends tonight(Oh, oh, oh)And in the morning we'll wake up and we'll be alright'Cause baby, we don't have to fightAnd I don't want this love to feel like

Chorus

Identify the following metaphors and similes:“Love is a battlefield.” ~ Pat Benatar

“Our love is like water, pinned down and abused for being strange.” – Live

“The Way Kathie Lee needs Regis, that’s the way I need Jesus.” – Kanye West

"He was screaming like my wife." – Mike Tyson

"Fear is your best friend or your worst enemy. It's like fire. If you can control it, it can cook for you; it can heat your house. If you can't control it, it will burn everything around you and destroy you. If you can control your fear, it makes you more alert, like a deer coming across the lawn.” – Mike Tyson

"To sit here at the same table with my hero, George W. Bush...I feel like I'm dreaming. Somebody pinch me. You know what, I'm a pretty sound sleeper, that may not be enough...Somebody shoot me in the face." – Stephen Colbert

“Open wide baby bird, 'cause momma's got a big fat night crawler of Truth. Here comes The Colbert Report!” – Stephen Colbert

Your task for tonightStep 1: Find a song that has at least two

different similes. Identify each simile and explain how each relates to the overall meaning of the song.

Step 2: Bring in a copy of the lyrics of your song, and present your findings to the class. You should either bring an mp3 of your song for your presentation, or you should ask Mr. Medd to find one for you.

Each presentation will be evaluated out of a possible 20 marks (10 marks per explanation of simile). Presentations will take place tomorrow.
