Volunteer Richard Link (in front) ischanging lives through Tai Chi.

Classes are free for transplant patients andtheir support person.

“We are believers.”

Paying it ForwardRufus Jones operated a family-owned business for 25 years—The Jones Big Star. “We ran that business acrossfrom Stax for 25 years. My parking lot was the showcase for Isacc Hayes’ Cadillac,” Rufus recalls. His daughter, Gladys Jones, also has fond memories of the family endeavor. “I was allowed to work therewhen I could count to 100 so I could make change,” says Gladys.

Today, the Jones family is working together again. This time it’s not the family business, but a familycommitment to improved health. Gladys, her father and her aunt Yvonne all attend Richard Link’s Tai Chiclass that he teaches twice a week for transplant patients. Richard himself is a transplant recipient and says atone point in his life he had trouble just walking to the mailbox. He decided to get stronger and turned toTai Chi. From there, he became certified to teach, and today, he has a growing community of people whoattend his classes and are inspired by his enthusiasm for movement.

Gladys and her family met Richard at a patient transplant briefing, and from that day, they have beenattending without fail. “Richard says ‘motion is lotion.’ He encourages us to be active and get moving,” shesays with confidence.

Gladys is on a waiting list for a pancreas/kidney transplant but is considered inactive until she loses 40pounds. “Since I have been coming to Tai Chi, I have lost 30 pounds,” she says. “I am also diabetic. Thisclass has helped improve my balance, lowered my blood pressure and more.”

They aren’t Richard’s only followers. Bill and Edith Palmer have been attending classes for nearly a year. Billreceived a liver transplant in December of 2010. Today, the couple says they attend twice a week. “I love it,”says Edith. “You can feel your muscles relax immediately, and the strength we have gained is amazing.Bill was walking the second day after his transplant in the ICU.”

Richard does all of this for no pay—just the reward of the progress he sees in his students. As the class linesup for the final movements, they look like a family of sorts. Their faces are calm, relaxed and focused. Thefinal words of Edith Palmer describing her experience with the class and with Richard come to mind. “Weare believers.”

A little more than a year after announcing the launchof a $5million fundraising campaign to create theComprehensive Sickle Cell Center of Memphis, construction of the center’s outpatient clinic anddedicated in-patient unit is underway on the MethodistUniversity Hospital campus.

Scheduled for completion in Fall 2011 andencompassing 7,300 square feet, the center will includea 24-hour Emergency Infusion Unit and a PreventiveOutpatient Clinic. The infusion unit will provide24-hour pain crisis management, transfusion andintravenous infusion support. Providing preventivehealth maintenance specific to sickle cell diseaseconsists of patient education, genetic counseling, social work services and psychosocial support.

The Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center’s design isbased upon delivering the most advanced clinicaltreatment, offering on-site research for treatmentadvances and ultimately a cure. Committed toproviding continuity of care at its best, the Center’scare model will reduce admission rates to the hospital

and emergency departments for sickle cell patients, translating to reduced pain and suffering for sickle cellpatients in the Mid-South.

Your support of the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Centerof Memphis will help improve the health and quality oflife for hundreds in our community.

“The Center will be a brain trust for treating and researchingsickle cell disease.”

A Mighty VisionDr. Osarogiagbon—or Dr. O as he is warmly referred to by his patients—is a man with a vision. It’s a visionto provide comprehensive care to adults suffering from sickle cell disease, and he’s not alone. Memphishas one of the largest groups of adult patients in the county, yet no comprehensive center exists to treat theirmany needs. Fortunately, a group of caring citizens and medical providers are joining hands with MethodistHealthcare to create the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center of Memphis.

“Patients die frequently from this disease and oftentimes they are young when they die—and they die after alife of pain and suffering,” he says. “This is a tremendously physically and emotionally damaging disease witha highly complicated care need. For adults, there has been no effort to approach the care in acomprehensive manner.”

“The Center will be a brain trust for treating and researching sickle cell disease,” saysDr. Osarogiagbon. “It will increase visibility and optimize clinical care thanks to more well-trained sicklecell caregivers,” he says. “It will also foster increased research that will help us understand this disease. Finally, clinicians involved in the care will learn how to communicate to other healthcare providers the needsof these patients.”

All of this results in better care for patients, less suffering and perhaps one day a life free from sickle cell. That’s a mighty vision.

Dixie Laster, RN

“So many patients have said, ‘I just wish I could go outsideone more time.’ At the Residence, we can roll their bed out to

see the gardens or go to the chapel.”

A Family AffairDixie Laster is a nurse. She’s also a healer, a listener, a wife and a daughter. But what makes Dixie extraspecial is her calling. It’s a calling to care for the dying and to help make the last days of a person’s life onearth comfortable for the patient and for the family.

“Hospice isn’t a bad place when you are ready for it,” she says. “I am going to make sure you enjoy the lastdays you have left.”

That’s why Dixie is anxiously waiting for the Methodist Hospice Residence to open this summer. “This willbe an extension of a patient’s home where we can care for the patient and the family. Caregivers get brokendown, too.”

Dixie says the Residence will provide a home environment while providing 24-hour care, pain relief andmedical support. “So many patients have said, ‘I just wish I could go outside one more time.’ At theResidence we can roll their bed out to see the gardens or go to the chapel. You can’t do that in a hospital; it’snot meant to do that.”

“This Hospice Residence means so much to me,” she says. “My family understands the power of hospice andthey have given to help make this one even more special.” She says that her parents have donated thechildren’s play furniture and her husband Glenn’s family has donated the communion table.

“This will make a world of difference for our community,” she says.

Thanks to Dixie, to her calling and to the support of untold caregivers and donors, the Hospice Residencewill be a place of service for generations to come. It’s truly a family affair.

We’ve built a place—a home, so full of light, love andcompassion that it spills outside and touches everythingthat surrounds it. It is our work made real and visible.

Located on six beautifully wooded acres, MethodistHospice Residence offers patients and their familiesthe very best of faith, health and compassion during avery special time in their lives.

Featuring 30 patient rooms, a conference room, chapel, family gathering area, a kitchen for families, gardens and walking paths, the Hospice Residenceallows Methodist to provide a homelike place for thosewith a short time to live and a place for families andfriends to share in the last days of a loved one’s life.

Each patient room offers comfortable surroundings toenable patients and families to feel more at ease. Pets, personal mementos, photos, music and all the comfortsof home are encouraged to make each room as close tohome as possible.

Because of your generosity, this much-needed resourceis now a reality for the patients and families we care foreach day. Methodist Hospice Residence is a place wherepatients can embrace life to the fullest and have thedignity they deserve during their final stage of life.

Sarah McCoid,Jonah McCoid andJeffrey Gibson, MD

“The care I received was incredible,” she says. “They cared about us as a family—not just about me.”

A Rock Star is BornWhen Sarah McCoid says she and her baby Jonah were treated like rock stars at Methodist Le BonheurGermantown Hospital, you just believe her.

It’s clear she isn’t one to exaggerate. Nor does she complain, even as she recalls the events of the last yearwhen she delivered Jonah 12 weeks early by C-section and was immediately moved to nine hours of heartsurgery. Within six weeks, she was home caring for her two older children, Aaron and Noah (now 7 years and15months old), managing all of this while making trips back and forth to the NICU at the GermantownWomen and Children’s Pavilion where newborn Jonah stayed for 61 days.

“It’s all very surreal,” she says. “I don’t think 34-year-olds are supposed to have heart surgery.”

When Sarah was 17 weeks pregnant with Jonah, she was overwhelmed with heart palpitations. To be safe, herdoctor sent her for tests. The tests revealed that Sarah had Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder of theconnective tissue that can have serious complications such as defects of the heart valves and aorta. The testsalso revealed a 5.3 cm aneurysm. Doctors said she wouldn’t make it through the third trimester of herpregnancy and, at 28-weeks, her aorta dissected. And that’s where the story really begins.

She says the multi-disciplinary care she received from Dr. Jeffrey Gibson and the team of physicians andmedical staff at Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown saved her life and her baby’s life. Today, mom andchildren are all doing well.

“Jonah is over 10 pounds. My seven-year-old loves being a big brother, and my 15-month-old just smilesand waves,” she says proudly. And she will always remember the team at Methodist for her outstanding care—and for treating her whole family like rock stars.

“The care I received was incredible,” she says. “They cared about us as a family—not just about me.”

Imagine a healthcare setting where the family membercan be by the side of the patient, providing comfort, support and vital information for recovery. They arepart of the healing process, collaborating withcaregivers to determine the best possible care for thepatient. Patients and family members are more engagedin the healing process, are more familiar with the levelof care needed for recovery and are better prepared toprovide the necessary care after the patient isdischarged from the hospital.

At Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, the spirit ofhealing has been our strength for the better part of acentury. As a faith-based healthcare organization, wehave a unique culture that understands that healinginvolves more than treating specific symptoms. Aphilosophy of patient- and family-centered careembraces our vision of delivering outstanding care toeach patient.

Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare is committed toequal partnerships with our patients and their familiesto create a truly special care environment. To ensurethat commitment, we are enlisting advisors, calledPatient and Family Partners, to provide guidance andinput. These partners help us view the world throughtheir unique and important perspectives byparticipating in work groups on special projects, sittingon a special hospital steering committee or simplyproviding input during patient- and family-centeredcare meetings.

We’re committed to providing the best healthcareexperience for our patients and families and settingthe standard in delivering compassionate patient- andfamily-centered care.

“We don't passively receive the sick. We proactively reach out tobuild the healthy. This is what a hospital should be about."

God is HereAndy McCarroll had his own ideas about how to transform a community. Yet when he heard about theCenter of Excellence (COE) in Faith and Health at Methodist University Hospital and the work GaryGunderson and his team were creating in the community and around the world, he says it “just made sense.”

“The vision of this program transcends the traditional boundaries of politics, economics, religion orbusiness—you name it,” he says. “The result is a healthier community or at least the possibility of achieving acommunity that embraces its full potential.”

Andy believes that we must create the conditions that allow each person to reach his or her full potential.“We have to start with basic needs for everyone—health is one of those basic needs. “We don't passively receivethe sick. We proactively reach out to build the healthy. This is what a hospital should be about."

Andy and his family decided to support the work of the COE by making a generous donation tohelp build the Center of Excellence space at Methodist University Hospital. The COE opened earlier thisyear. “It’s wonderful that Methodist is creating a context where these conversations are taking place.”

Ultimately, he says, it’s really about love. And where love is, Andy says, “God is there.”

“God’s hands have been at work. He has been putting thepieces in place.”

Turning Tragedy into Good“If you ever need anything, don’t be shy. Let me know how I can help.” These words, spoken by DennisJones to his Germantown United Methodist Church pastor, Rick Kirchoff, began a friendship that wouldlast a lifetime. From that first conversation, Rick says Dennis always made it clear he was here to help others.Yet Dennis did not share the depth of his personal struggle with depression—not even with his most intimatepartner—his wife Debbie.

“After 35 years of marriage, I didn’t know that Dennis suffered from a cancer of the mind and it wasn’t beingtreated. In fact, it was terminal,” says Debbie.

On December 28, 2009, Dennis took his own life. Debbie remembered, “I was in shock. I had no idea.”Debbie and her daughter, Cristin Santana, quickly realized that “nothing good comes from keeping secrets”and decided not to hide how Dennis had died or how he had battled depression.

Instead, Debbie says, “I wanted to do something to turn this tragedy into something good.” She talked toRick about starting a program that would offer help to other families battling depression. Rick wasn’t sureany single church had the capacity to sustain the work for decades to come and connected Debbie with GaryGunderson, Sr. VP of Faith and Health for Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare. After much prayer andplanning, the Dennis H. Jones Living Well Network is underway at Methodist Healthcare.

Rick has joined Methodist, and one of his roles will be to lead the effort. “It’s a work in progress,” he says.“But, one thing is for sure, it will honor Dennis.”

“I wish I had known enough to be able to help Dennis. With this program, we can plug a hole where wedidn’t even know there was one,” she says. “Dennis was giving and caring. Now he can continue to give andcare through this work for years to come.”

“Every nurse, every person was quite amazing.”

Walking the TalkFlintco, a commercial construction company, and its division president, Kevin Moyes, are proud supportersof the Methodist Healthcare Foundation. “Methodist is very important to the community. We wanted tosupport it.”

Kevin was well aware of Methodist’s impact on our community, but a phone call last year made it even morereal to him.

“There are some days you never forget,” says Kevin as he recalls a call from a trusted employee. “The dayTony called to tell me he needed a liver transplant and was on a waiting list was one of those days.”

Under the care of Dr. James Eason and Dr. Satheesh Nair, Tony Flow began his transplant journey. Hisstory is heavy with numbers and statistics—days waiting for the right donor, days in recovery and countlessnumbers of caring people helping him along the way.

“Before my transplant, I had worked for a long time in the Methodist facilities. I was familiar with theprocedures, the policies and the people.” Tony is superintendent for Flintco Constructive Solutions and thelead manager of the team that built Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital and the Women’s andChildren’s Pavilion. He says his experience as a patient gave him a new perspective on a familiar friend.“Every nurse, every person was quite amazing.”

“When Methodist says, ‘patients come first,’ it’s true,” says Tony. “They mean it.”

Today, Tony and the Flintco team are wrapping up their work at Germantown, but, Tony says he willcontinue his work as a volunteer in the Transplant Center visiting patients post-surgery. “I know where I wasthe next day,” he says with a smile. “It’s the right thing to do to go back and encourage others.”

Methodist Healthcare has turned to the businesscommunity, not only to help us provide outstandinghealthcare, but to also enhance and grow theseservices. Many of our most generous donors are ourphysician groups, vendors, construction companiesand Memphis corporations who understand theimportance and impact of high quality healthcarewithin a community.

We are grateful to these businesses that support eventsthat benefit our priority clinical services or ongoingprograms such as Camp Bravehearts, our family griefcamp for children who cope with the death of a familymember or friend. Many corporate partners helpedbuild the Center of Excellence in Faith and Health andthe new Hospice Residence, while others underwriteresearch and educational programs in transplant andneurosciences. To be able to go beyond “business asusual” depends on our business contributors.

The 2010Methodist Healthcare Golf Classic, an annual sponsor-driven golf tournament andpre-tournament party held each September, directed a portion of proceeds to the new Comprehensive Sickle CellCenter being established on the Methodist University Hospital campus. The tournament attracted 36 teamsrepresenting more than 55 corporate supporters of Methodist Healthcare Foundation.

Will you be a part of something great? It takes caring physicians, dedicated Associates and committed donors to meet the myriad of needs of our patients andour neighbors. YOU are the difference between a good healthcare system and a great healthcare system. Because ofcaring donors like you, Methodist Healthcare touches more lives, in more ways, than any other healthcare provider inour city. Thank you for your support. We’re here to care for you.
