The project – initiated by the State govern-ment to tackle the flood situation in various parts of the city – have grown into encompass many other dimensions. Some of these could be termed as the root source for the flooding; while, some others are long-sought after necessities of the city. There are various desirable by-products of the project such as rain water harvesting, preservation of erstwhile water reservoirs in the city, developing a public recre-ation area, etc.

The century-old Kanakakunnu Palace is seeing a renovation drive by the State government. The project is bound to restore the glory and legacy of Kanakakunnu.

Flood Mitigation! Operation Anantha

A sum of Rs. 10 crores has been earmarked by the State Government for flood mitigation works in Thiru-vananthapuram city. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has stated that the amount

would be from the disaster relief fund. The Thampa-noor and East Fort areas of Thiruvananthapuram city would be benefiting from these works. Minister for Health V.S. Sivakumar

quoted that the decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting. He also stated that the decision was taken after Minister for Urban Affairs Manjalamkuzhy Ali apprised the Cabinet of the

ized technology - ofdrains around Ponnara Sreedhar Park at Thampa-noor. The depth and width of Pazhavangady canal was increased to reduce water-logging. Road mitigation works in East Fort including the road extension works are being carried out at a cost of Rs. 6 crores. C-shaped Box culverts are being installed by Kerala Road Fund Board over the part of Amayizhanjan canal that runs from Uppidam-oodu bridge to the main entrance of the Vanchiyoor District Court. This would enhance the canal’s depth and width. There is also a plan to construct a diver-sion canal that would link the Pazhavangady canal’s Thampanoor side to the Amayizhanjan canal on the Uppidamoodu side. This ca-nal will be connected to the link and cross drains in SS Kovil Road of Thampanoor. The second phase of the capital city development program has given un-

mistakable significance to flood mitigation and road widening. It is found that there have been extended efforts from the concerned – namely the Government – to find a long-lasting solution to flooding in areas such as Ganga Nagar, Karimadom Colony, Ka-veri Gardens, Thampanoor Thoppu, Yamuna Nagar, etc. The canal that passes under the railway tracks at Thampanoor would be cleaned. The Railways have been convinced to widen or construct a new one when the rains are over. It is of note that the scope of ‘Operation Anantha’, which would be carried out in a phased manner, would include cleaning of entire drainage network, creation of a junkyard where old vehicles would be crushed and scraped, beautifica-tion of canals, removal of hoardings, etc. Chief Secretary Jiji Thomson

situation in these areas. This Flood Mitigation Fund would be used for work to be carried out in the flood-prone areas in the capital city. The project has been christened ‘Operation Anan-tha.’ District Collector Biju Prabhakar would overview the project. It is evident from the sup-port from local residents and shopkeepers to the eviction and demolition drive at Thampanoor and East Fort, how much the public at large wants a solu-tion to the constant flood problem. V.S. Sivakumar, who is also the local MLA, stated that the Government has given high importance for flood mitigation in these areas. The decision to utilize State funds to complete the schemes shows the promi-nence that the Govern-ment has placed on flood mitigation.

The measures taken include renovation - using special

ment plan. Installation of drinking water kiosks across the city is another attempt to do away with plastic water bottles. This would be finalised within a few months.

The focus will also be on re-vamping the water bodies that existed in the city. The decision to restore water reservoirs in the city has been widely appreciated by the people with notables such as Poetess Sugatha-kumari and historian MG Shashibooshan welcoming it. The revamping of water bodies gathers significance from the fact that the city has always knows for its waterbodies. Ponnara Park and Putharikandam Maidan are also considered for rainwater collection centres.

Architect G. Shankar in-formed that the Manjali-kulam playground will be

widened and converted into multiple facilities like an indoor stadium and football ground. The revamped pool will have a jogging park, children’s corner and green space around it. There is also considerations for a boat-ing facility in the rainwater pond at Manjalikulam. The excess water from the pond would be pumped out into the Amayizhan-chan canal. The pond is set to occupy an area of around 1 acre of the total 1.81 acres. One could hope that the revamped grounds at Manjalikulam would become a gather-ing place for the public, vibrant with activities and amenities. The project once completed should develop Manjalikulam grounds into a dynamic waterfront area. An extensive campaign would be launched against hoardings in the city, on

has informed that the old vehicles in government office premises and police stations would be disposed off at the junkyard that will be set up. The develop-ments that led to ‘Opera-tion Anantha’ could be just flooding issues in the heart of the city; however, this has led to various devel-opmental activities in the city. The encroachments of canals in Pazhavangady, East Fort and Thampa-noor stretches have been cleared. The waterbodies and wetlands would be revived. As a continua-tion of the efforts for the city’s development, waste management too would be looked into once the flood mitigation part is complet-ed. K. Vasuki the Execu-tive Director of Suchitwa Mission has stated that a phased ban on plastic would be put into force as a part of Waste Manage-

which a Supreme Court order is already in force. A decision on removing or demolishing illegal structures is under consid-eration. The city corporation is coordinating with the governmental agencies for the successful completion of this project. For the first time in the country, the provision of Disaster Management Act has been invoked for the purpose of flood mitigation. There have been extended efforts from the government to put all concerned depart-ments in the picture. Kerala

Sustainable Urban Devel-opment Project officials, Thiruvananthapuram City Corporation, Suchitwa Mis-sion, District Collectorate, Public Works Department, Railways, renowned archi-tects, environmentalists, etc. are bound together in a common cause to work for the upliftment of Thiruvananthapuram City. The tasks set out for the entire team of participants in ‘Operation Anantha’ is hectic. The cityites are hopeful that the project would not stop in solving the problem for now, but would give an everlasting solution. The government

should ensure that the rules and regulations set in place during this project should be continued. Fur-ther developments in the city should be carried out keeping mind the problems that the city had due to haphazard growth. Unanimous support and unwavering focus from the cityites and various depart-ments of the government would ultimately result in Thiruvananthapuram City becoming a blooming city.Hopefully the capital of ‘God’s Own Country’ would also become a ‘Clean and Green City’

than pushing the welfare of the financially backward people. No wonder, it is a saga that has made Kallin-gal Endeavors the hallmark of ceaseless determination,

It’s an interesting story built on grounds of a social promise. It’s the tale of a business that grew from a ration shop which went on to become an authorized

professionalism and humil-ity ever since its inception.

The germ of this thought came to Kallingal Basheer who had been a political activist for more than 2 decades. In the year 1987, Kallingal opened up an auto service centre along with the ration shop. Looking at the standards of profession-alism and service delivery in the auto centre, Bajaj Motors decided to take Kallingal under its wings. Lo and behold, Kallingal’s auto point was appointed as Authorised Service Centre of Bajaj vehicles and given the dealership status in 2006. Kallingal Automobiles was hence born. There was no stopping then. By the year 2007, Kallingal Automobiles had scored a major feat – of selling more

auto rickshaws as compared to any other auto dealer in India. Success had arrived and in such a way that it led Kallingal Shafeek to present a paper in Sydney, helping him to make a mark in the auto rickshaw segment. Such has been the fruits of his painstaking labour that today Kallingal Motors has offices in a number of towns in the capital city of Trivandrum.

Enter Kallingal Shafeek, the young MD of Kallingal Mo-tors who has followed his father Kallingal Basheer’s social endeavours in em-powering the womenfolk. Kallingal has over a period of time taken up multiple projects to help people be-longing to low-income class. Some of his need-based interventions include fa-cilitating low interest loans

from banking institutions so that the underprivileged women can buy autos. The results of this project have been an eye opener. As of today, hundreds of women have been able to buy autos which have taken them to the path of self-reliance and independence, a major achievement in itself for them. Led by his father’s guiding spirit, Shafeek has left no stone unturned in getting the banks to enable easy availability of loans for women so that they can buy autos.

In fact, more than 10 wom-en were provided free autos by the Kallingal Group. Not only this, the women’s social safety was taken up by Kallingal in cooperation with panchayat officials and police authorities.

tered the market, Vanitha autos have benefited the common woman manifold.

Another effort of the Kallin-gal Group has been setting up of Basheer Training Centre that offers driving classes to the women.

As if this was not enough, The Kallingal Basheer Charitable Trust is another initiative that gives financial assistance to the females for their marriage. Shafeek follows his father’s path as he wants to carry forward his lineage of helping the

Nothing can stop the humanitarian efforts of the Kallingal Group. The next action point for them is the Technopark area where several women work. If auto rickshaws driven by women are made available in this area, it would bring more safety to the women employees working in Technopark considering the female auto rickshaw driv-ers operating there.

If Bajaj got Chetak autos, then Kallingal Group has got Vanitha autos. Since the year 2012 when they en-

Isn’t it overwhelming to find out how a two-wheeler service centre, the Kallingal Group grew year after year to promising heights? They have been the first dealers of Tata Nano cars in Kerala so you can well imagine their social efforts done into helping the poor and the downtrodden. wHere’s saluting the towering spirit of father-son Kallingal Ba-sheer and Kallingal Shafeek in their socially-driven journey!

A historic building like KERALAM – is the one that gives us a sense of wonder and enable us to know more about the people who lived in the medieval periods and the culture that produced it. The values that could be derived from it include that of architectural, aesthetic, historic, archaeological, economic, social, political, spiritual and symbolic.

Envisioned as the most changing capital city of south India, the last word in beauty and simplicity, Thiruvananthapuram symbolizes India’s independence and its future. Aptly hailed as part of God’s own country, the city Thiruvananthapuram is fast growing as a city of convenience and comfort. With beautiful lanes and streets connecting the city, the town has several beautiful places to visit and cherish.

This Museum is situated

in the heart of city. As the man started his journey from medieval to ancient period, the invention of new materials for shelter has been man’s prime concern. With shelter, grew other habits such as lifestyle and occupation too. Museum is a mirror of medieval society. Connection between the medieval periods got disconnected; however, museums preserve it still.

KERALAM (Museum of history and heritage) – is housed in a heritage

building that captures the quintessence of the land in an enchanting 7,000 sq.ft. of space. Here, quaint hallways, majestic pillars and arched gateways, built in a mix of traditional and colonial style, leads you to different time zones and spaces, to reveal the soul of Kerala.

At KERALAM, take a trip back in time and explore the splendid heritage and the rich historic wealth of this serene spice-scented land. Enrich your knowledge on the detailed

history of the items displayed through special documentaries, kiosks and description boards.

The objectives of the museums are many such as to add value to the oldness by preserving it intact, to show the transformation of ages or the evolution of mankind from ape to man, to create public participation as a community activity in restoration, to give an in-depth view on how civilization flourished in Kerala along the rivers, and to highlight how man rose to power and evolved kingdom with guilds and feuds.

The history of ancient Tamil Nadu and Kerala dates from the Paleolithic period. Remains such as potteries, burial pots and paintings have been discovered by archaeological survey, thus proving its ancient ethnicity. Some of the ancient civilizations that prospered were Cholas, Pandyas, Chalukyas, and Cheras. They ruled their respective kingdoms with great power and dominance.

KERALAM has a royal horse car just within the entrance of the corridor. A walk around would lead one to the pre-historic corridor unit that preserves some idols. Thereafter, there is a

number of sections, which would give the visitors a glimpse of the iron-age, medieval history, etc. Bronze, stone, and wooden sculptures of Kerala Temples are also preserved. Appealing artworks of wood carvings and stone sculptures are displayed. It seems the art of creating images has been practiced in Kerala from very early times. The art is supposed to have drawn inspiration from the existing religious faiths of the people. The conception of Siva, Vishnu, Parvathy, Hanuman, Ganesha, Subramanya in several forms has given shape to beautiful images of bronze and wood. Some historic idols that are eye-catchy include 16th Century Nataraja sculpture, 14th century Brahma sculpture, and 14th Century Narasimha sculpture.

Burial accompaniments belonging to the Iron age, 17th century murals from Pundareekapuram Temple

of Kottayam and some Granthas of Ramayana and Mahabharatha written on palm leaves are restored in a beautiful glass shelf. One can have a glimpse of some Roman Dinari(coins), which shows Kerala had once maritime contacts with Roman empire. Or one can even find stone cells, which prove neolithic habitation in Kerala. One can embark on a discovery of the architecture and the ancient ways of life by exploring the interiors of traditional Nalukettu or even experience the intricacies and the richness of Mural art, traditionally found in the temple walls of Kerala. Visitors can even escape into the world of colours with the Kalamezhuthu – a traditional representation of auspicious figures using coloured powders.

The food business par-ticularly restaurants was going low on the recogni-tion front. This was due to many factors such as lack of professionalism and dy-

rendered good food and good dining experience.

A big challenge it is when it comes to evaluating the top restaurants and food joints in the city of Trivandrum, and recommending the same to the public to vote for their favourite eating

venue.

Any award function puts up competing participants in the best spirit and tone so that it becomes a reference point in future award cere-monies. Health Challenges with Ayurveda – The Analysis

Post-Independence, the enormously populated India has made dynamic efforts in the health field. However, there have been unaddressed issues prevail-ing such as deficiencies in

Page 57: Metro Mart May 2015

May 2015www.metromartdaily.com

service outreach, limited health insurance coverage, expenditures of the govern-ment and unmanageable costs on the higher side.

Besides these, there have been considerable gaps in healthcare infrastructure and large volume of dis-parities between the Indian states and urban and rural populations which are mea-sured by indicators such as the quantity of hospital beds and doctor-patient ratios.

It is quite disheartening to know that India’s overall health indicators are below international average. Fac-tors such as basic sanita-tion, nutrition, and living standards need tremen-dous improvement.

Although progress has been made with treatment of some diseases, not all communicable dis-eases which put hu-man life in danger have been treated in a satisfactory way. What’s more, the rapid changes in India’s society and lifestyles have pushed the growth of non-communi-

cable diseases (NCDs), such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and chronic respira-tory disease/asthma. All these have happened largely due to tobacco and alcohol use, poor diet, sed-entary lifestyles and air pol-lution. This has influenced a decline in life expectancy and increase in the burden

of diseases as age increases.

India has a pluralistic healthcare system, with the AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homoe-opathy) component being practised and imbibed by medical practitioners. Al-most 63% of AYUSH doctors practice Ayurveda. Yet, the

Page 58: Metro Mart May 2015

METROMay 201558T H I R U VA N A N T H A P U R A M mart

AYUSH workforce is unde-rutilised and the strengths of Ayurveda in particular lie untapped. The aim of the 6th WAC (World Ayurveda Congress) and National AROGYA Expo 2015 is to realise the potential of Ayurveda and develop an action plan in or-der to improve health care in India, thereby serving as a model for public health globally.

Objectives and Ambitions of the 6th WAC and

National AROGYA Expo 2015

The 6th WAC aims to fulfil multiple roles through its concerted efforts: - To make Ayurveda an in-tegral component of health-care management.

- To facilitate acceptance as well as recognition for Ayurveda as a ‘complete healthcare system’ that can be adopted across the world in multiple countries.

- To create right-minded platform for scientific basing of Ayurveda and popula-rising the outcomes and results.

- To push the creation of multiple medicinal institu-tions, laboratories and universities across the world that would aid and help in joint research on Ayurveda.- Look at various op-tions in order to strike a more meaningful role for Ayurveda as far as Public

Health at State and Central Government levels goes.

- Keep showcasing from time to time technical advancements by way of poster Sessions, record number of Papers being presented and launch on-line database for Ayurveda references.

- The aim of AROGYA Expo will be to bring Consumer in close interaction with Physi-cians, Industry and build a bank of knowledge on the best options in health care through Ayurveda.- Under this health driven Congress, traditional Heal-ers in India will have to document their wisdom accumulated over the years.

Guidelines for the Session The 6th World Ayurveda Congress conducted an ex-

clusive Scientific Conference to showcase the recent advances made in research in the field of Ayurveda. There were Pre-Conference Workshops, Oral and Poster Presentations, In Confer-ence Symposia as well as

invited Talks by experts.

It’s an event and interaction between professionals and consumers on Ayurveda that will no doubt position India on the global map of innovative forms of healthcare.

Parnasala has attracted tourists and pilgrims from around the world belonging to all religions.

Quote

Karunakara Guru envisioned a society free of distinctions based caste, creed or race and encouraged inter-caste marriage in order to destroy the walls of caste and religion. Guru’s ideas are most relevant as these are times of strife.

Development solutions need not always be ‘with high technology’, ‘innovative’, and

should definitely not be ‘very costly’. Some problems could just be the case of needing ‘A

stitch in time’. Sometimes your answer for solutions would lie in the past. At a time of eco-

nomic constraints, the state and the country need solutions which are more cost-effective.

India could hope to get some such solutions from the central government’s ‘One Year for

the Nation’ programme. Proper utilization of such programmes would enable the country

to become a developed nation.

Differences of opinion, lively debates, protest are all part and parcel of ‘plans for change’.

How we pass through this stage would also have a significant role in the completion or

implementation of the plans. As in any democratic society, it is the right and responsibility

of each and every citizen to participate in the development of the surroundings that they

live in. This participative behavior among the citizens can be and should be encouraged by

governments. The governments should provide information materials, take up alternative

channels of communications, and involve grassroots organizations that are in constant

touch with the common man. The population should be put at ease in implementing those

development plans.

It is not about how many proposals are planned or how much money is allotted for those

plans; it is all about how much is completed and how fast it is done. And for this you need

participation – participation of one and all!
