What’s Hot

Okay, we are so digging these shoes - a little retro, totally Mad Men, these super comfy and stylish oxfords have just the right sized heel to make them uber-fashionable for fall. Soma Wilai has them in gray, blue and the funky brown and cream saddle style. We want them all.

Yes, headbands have been in for a while now, and this summer’s craze was feathers, but when you combine the two, you get a can’t miss accessory. This one has a bright royal

purple flower and beautiful feather on a suede band - stunning hippie chick gone high fashion. This one and

many others are made by a Jackson native for Soma Wilai.

Is there ANY other movie our right now that anyone in Mississippi is talking about?

Set in Mississippi during the 1960s, a southern so-ciety girl returns from college determined to be-come a writer, but turns her friends' lives -- and a small Mississippi town -- upside down when she decides to interview the black women who have spent their lives taking care of prominent more »southern families. friend's housekeeper, is the first to open up -- to the dismay of her friends in the tight-knit black community. Despite Skeeter's life-long friendships hanging in the balance, she and Aibileen con-tinue their collaboration and soon more women come forward to tell their stories -- and as it turns out, they have a lot to say.

Besides the fact that the film features some of Jackson’s coolest hot spots, and some local tal-ent, the film takes a pretty honest look at the ra-cial divide that existed here in our fair city not too long ago. To be fair, it glosses over the more radi-cal events of the time, but the film’s portrayal of the ordinary, everyday racial indignities that were the accepted norm is spot on.

Drew and Moriah are ready for that first feel of fall in their black jackets. Drew’s is an actual motorcycle jacket made of heavy leather with a zip out lining for a fraction of the actual cost. He’s paired it with a cool graphic T & designer jeans. Moriah’s jacket. is cotton with sweet ruffles to keep it from being too hard core. Her graphic T and jeans are both high end designer, and check out the Juicy bag shes carrying.

Drew’s striped T paired with a chambray blue rolled sleeve shirt scream casual cool paired with these dis-tressed designer jeans.

Moriah is accessorized perfectly with this long silver necklace, cool lace up heels, and Juicy Couture bag. Why pay retail to look this good?

Metro Teenz Bowling PartyThe Metro Girlz hosted a bowling party at Fannin Lanes to welcome all the newest Metro Girlz & Guyz. I’m not sure too many broke 100, but they sure had a good time.

Center, Newest Metro Girl Chloe guarded the sweets while, Blair & Rachel (middle R) shared a pizza.

Morgan’s sweet, floaty dress in fall tones is perfect for those early season games. Pair it with a strappy sandal and oversize bag to carry your cow bells, and you’re tailgate chic. Adrienne’s printed cord shorts are super soft and the floppy bow top brings a level of sophistication to the look.

This silk dress Morgan is wearing is classic Frock, elegant, chic, yet somehow casual. Morgan looks stunning without trying too hard. Wear it on or off or even one shouldered. The natural stone cuff bracelet is awesome.

Next page: L: Adrienne looks great in this hip-pie chic top which is soft and floaty and cut to accentuate curves. The detailing on the jeans is really nice. Bottom L: This rust romper is styl-ish enough to wear anywhere.

Top R: Morgan’s sweet, lace overlay dress is perfect for homecoming. The lacework on this dress is absolutely incredible.

Beauty SpotThe Side Pony

The side pony tail is the perfect blend of style and comfort. You still look cute, but let’s face it. Mississippi is still pretty darn hot those first couple months of school. Don’t just slick all your hair back into a traditional pony tail that says “I’m ready for gym class.” The side pony says “I’m ready to be noticed.”

To get Blair’s look, straighten your hair, and pull the pony tail to the opposite side of your part brushing your bangs across your forehead. Give the hair at your crown a little tease for some lift first.

If you’re rockin’ great curls like Madison, leave your pony tail just a little loose and softer, and make sure to pull a few curls loose to frame your face. Adding a great headband updates the look from sweet to sassy.

Skate shop, design studio, T shirt factory, & high fashion boutique. What do these things all have in common? They all reside in the same lo-cation in the big blue Fondren Corner building and each is the brainchild of one of Jack-son’s most creative talents who is known simply as CHANE.

“The store is really a result of all the dumb things we did the first ten years,” CHANE says. What used to be several locations has been combined into one odd mixed concept of exclu-sive products. Swell-O-Phonic is a top-of-the-line skateboard shop offering designer decks, and accessories along with ex-clusive lines of sneakers, back-packs and some clothing. Studio Chane produces three Tee shirt lines right in the store,

Project CHANE, tees with ir-reverent and fun sayings, The Jackson Tees which poke a bit of fun at metro area traditions and locales, and the ModSushi line of graphic tees which are CHANE’s own creations.

SomaWilai is the fashion bou-tique which carries exclusive brands, most under $100, and all with a New York, urban cool style which is mainly where CHANE finds his fashions.

The store also offers a fantastic line of jewelry and headbands created by local artists.

As new fall classes began on Aug. 15, Hinds Community College’s enrollment kept pace with fall 2010 when the college had a record-breaking increase in credit student enrollment. As of Aug. 16, Hinds’ credit student enrollment was almost 13,000 students and was expected to surpass that by the end of late registration.

“The enrollment gains this year are in part-time students, compared to the last two years where we saw larger increases in full-time students,” said Kathryn Cole, director of Enrollment Services.

Freshman Deoxqwin Stewart of Jackson plans to eventually attend law school, but the 18-year-old got her start at Hinds on Monday. “I wanted to start off at a small level. I wanted to see what college life is like. Hinds is the best place to do so, I’ve heard,” she said.

Abbi Redd of Brandon, also a freshman, plans to major in nursing and continue at a university. “Hinds is close to home, and I wanted to be home for the first two years.”
