• TQM is an all inclusive dynamic process in an organisation to promote improvement in the effectiveness and efficiency of the business.
• TQM describes a management approach to long-term success through customer satisfaction.
• In a TQM effort, all members of an organization participate in improving processes, products, services, and the culture in which they work.

Origin of 5S
• Japanese Quality Expert G.I. Kobayashi suggested 5 basic steps to create a healthy working environment.
• These 5 suggested steps are known as the 5S’s of TQM.
• It results in reduction of waste and optimisation in the productivity by maintaining the orderly workplace to obtain the more consistent operational result.

Seiri
• Seiri stands for Sorting, Clearing, Classification.• Eliminates all unnecessary items from workplace• Helps unclutter the workplace .Eliminates useless
items like broken tools, obsolete jigs, scrap etc.• Helps to check the JUST IN CASE mentality.

Seiton
• Seiton means to Straighten, Simplify, Set in order or Configure.
• A place for everything and everything in its place!• Labelled and marked tools and Suitable modular
cabinet for the same• Efficient work flow with accessibility of
frequently used items.• Promotes efficient and effective storage,
neatness and an organised look to the workplace.
Seiso
• Seiso means to Sweep, shine, Scrub, Clean and Check.
• It refers to cleaning the workplace.• We infer that cleaning should be a part of the
daily routine and not an occasional activity.• Maintaining such an environment assists in
locating equipment malfunctioning like leakages, misalignment, undesired vibrations etc.
Seiketsu
• Seiketsu means to Standardize, stabilize or to Conform.• Implementation of standards or rules that everyone in
the organisation must follow is a part of the Seiketsu concept.
• for example the usage and implementation of job cycle chart, visual signs, placards, display boards informing everybody.
• Standardisation also includes preventing accumulation of unnecessary items and preventing procedure from breaking down.
Shitsuke
• Shitsuke means to Sustain and relates to self discipline, custom and practice.
• It says that it is necessary to continuously try to sustain the improved method of doing things, otherwise the achievements of the other 4 steps will not sustain for long.
