All bids to be per lot as numbered in the catalogue.

The highest bidder to be the buyer. In all cases of disputed bids the decision

of the Auctioneer shall be final.

Buyers to give their names and addresses and to make such cash payments on

account as may be required, in default of which the lots purchased shall be

resold immediately.

Purchases to be removed at the buyer's expense and risk within twenty-four

hours from the conclusion of the sale, and the remainder of the purchase money

to be paid on or before delivery, in default of which The Anderson Galleries,

Incorporated, will not be responsible for any loss or damage whatever, but the

lot or lots will be left at the sole risk of the purchaser, and subject to storage

charges.

All lots will be placed on public exhibition before the date of sale, for examina-

tion by intending purchasers, and The Anderson Galleries, Incorporated, will

not be responsible for the correctness of the description, authenticity, genuine-

ness, or for any defect or fault in or concerning any lot, and make no warranty

whatever, but will sell each lot exactly as it is, without recourse.

If accounts are not paid and purchases removed within twenty-four hours of the

conclusion of the sale, or, in the case of absent buyers, when bills are rendered,

any sum deposited as part payment shall be forfeited, and The Anderson Gal-

leries, Incorporated, reserve the right to resell the lot or lots by either private

or public sale, without further notice, and if any deficiency arises from such

resale it shall be made good by the defaulter, together with all expenses in-

curred. This condition shall be without prejudice to the right of this Com-

pany to enforce the sale contract and collect the amount due without such

resale, at its own option.

Worn b}r court lady of the highest rank. Ornamented with fin-

est quality of fei'tsui and pork-fat jade, carnelian agate, old

amber, turquoise and malachite, most skilfully carved, also

ornamented with four three-legged frogs in silver-gilt and king-

fisher feathers studded with jade. Wonderful and unique speci-

men.

Ornamented with fei'tsui and pork-fat jade, carnelian and old

amber beautifully carved and put on with exquisite taste. Very

fine and perfect specimen of the period.

Ornamented with various jade ornaments of exquisite carving,

each ornament harmonizing in color and design. Single pieces

of jade of this type are easily found, but it is very difficult to

find a complete set of this kind.

Conventional peony in beautiful rose, uncut velvet on golden-

yellow ground. This piece was actually taken from the Imperial

Summer Palace. Size, 4 feet 3 inches x 2 feet 9 inches


Worn by the Emperor and his descendants on court occasions.

Decorations of dragons embroidered in gold thread and various

forms of clouds, also phoenixes representing the imperial family

and bats of longevity beautifully embroidered in blue and red

silk on imperial-yellow ground. The bottom of the coat is thickly

embroidered in beautiful shades of blue, red and pink represent-

ing the water in the colors of the rainbow. The sleeves and neck

are decorated with gold embroidery and blue clouds on black

satin. The entire coat is lined with imperial-yellow brocade with

woven design of the imperial five-claw dragon of the family. Coats

of this kind were not allowed to be worn by anyone except the

imperial family and were forbidden to be sold.

Gilt bronze figure of Buddha seated on a lotus. The benevolent

expression of her face is skilfully executed and the head ornament

beautifully carved ; her hands and arms are very graceful and

^ well proportioned. Green patina, caused by age, covers the

surface of the figure, showing the gilt bronze beneath, and giving

a very beautiful effect. This is a very fine specimen.

expression of his face. The horse is in a spirited position, ready

In bronze form. Side carved animal-head handles with loose

hanging rings, supported by three legs which are also carved

% ^ in the form of animal-heads. The top of the cover is decorated

with sacred animal holding the precious ball beautifully carved

in emerald-green jade. Has the original cover and wood stand.

Very fine specimen. Height, 8 inches

272 MAMMOTH JADE VASE ch'ien lung

In the form of a tall wine jar, supported by four boys, side

handles representing conventional elephant trunks with loose

rings hanging from them. The centre of the body is decorated

with carved phoenixes in brilliant emerald-green, the reverse side

with carved decoration of coiled dragon also in emerald-green.

The top of the cover is decorated with coiled dragon carved in

openwork of the most beautiful quality of emerald-green. Very

fine quality of camphorous jade mixed with finest quality of

emerald-green. Has the original cover and wood stand.

Square jar shape. Carved animal side handles with hanging

loose rings. The entire surface is carved with sacred animals and

birds in openwork, utilizing each color of agate. The top of the

cover is decorated with carved phoenixes holding fruits of im-

mortals. It has the original cover and wood stand. Very finest

and largest known piece to he found. Height, 16 inches

Species of pink hawthorn blossoms which grow only in the im-

mortal land ; when the fragrance of the flowers is inhaled it is

supposed to bring the dead to life again. The flowers are carved
