Prehispanic traditions.

Mexico's culture is very rich, as it mixes elements from various periods, from pre-Hispanic aspects and from the colonial period to modern features.

This richness is also fuelled by the around 52 indigenous groups, successors to pre-Hispanic societies, which speak different languages. Of these, Nahuatl has the great number of speakers, with its populations concentrated in Mexico City, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Morelos, San Luis Potosí, the State of Mexico, Puebla and Veracruz. Of the total indigenous population, 17.1% live in the main cities: Monterrey, Cancun and Guadalajara.

The natural richness of the country, its plurality and values, therefore, provide characteristics which are very specific to what is “Mexican”. The majority of the peoples respect the uses and customs of their forebears. However, over 85% of Mexico's population live in big cities, such as Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey, and they have adapted to the changes which come with modernity.

Among the most representative regional and national festivals are those of a religious nature. Some of these conserve certain popular traditions which can even be considered pagan. One of the most important is 12 December, Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, who according to beliefs appeared to a peasant, Juan Diego, in 1531, on a hill at Tepeyac. Her image is now venerated in the Basilica of Guadalupe, in the north of Mexico City.

Another festival is the Day of the Dead, which takes place on 2 November, which has a pre-Hispanic origin and coincides with the Catholic celebrations of All Souls' Day and All Saints' Day. The Independence Day festival, held each 15 September in public squares in all the country's regions, is given its festive nature by the dances, music, fireworks and multi-coloured lights, making it one off the most noteworthy.
