TheDepartmentofArtTheDepartmentofArtoffersaprogramofgraduatestudyleadingtothedegreeofMasterofFineArts.Thegraduatefacultyconsistsofactiveprofessionalartistsspecializinginthetraditionalstudioareasofpainting,printmaking,sculpture,drawinganddigitalmedia.Additionalinterestsarereflectedincourseofferingssuchasenvironmentalartandmultimedia.In1990,theDepartmentofArtdevelopedanArtTheorycomponenttocomplementitscourseofferings.Thesecourses,taughtbypracticingvisualartists,haveaddedgreatlytotheconceptualbreadthofboththeundergraduateandgraduateprogramsatMaryland.
TheDepartmentofArt’seducationalphilosophyplacesgreatemphasisonindividualgrowth.Studentsareencouragedtoapproachtheirworkwithwillingnesstoexplorenewideas,asenseofdedicationandthedesiretochallengepastassumptions.Studentsacceptedintotheprogramhavealreadycreatedacoherentbodyofwork.TheyspendtheirthreeyearsattheUniversityexploringtheirworkin---depth,aswellaspursuingnewdirections.Interactionwithotherstudentsandwiththewiderangeoffacultyisencouraged;theDepartmentofArtalsoemphasizesamulticulturalawarenessofhistorical,theoreticalandcontemporaryartissues.ThisisreflectedintheColloquium/ArtHistory/ArtTheoryrequirementfortheMFAdegreeaswellasthelargercontextinwhichthestudentsareexpectedtocritiquetheirownwork.
Spacious,well---equippedstudiofacilitiesareavailabletoallMFAcandidates.Paintinganddrawingstudentsareencouragedtousethespacetoexploreabroadrangeofmedias.Asculpturearea------whichincludesawoodshop,welding/forgingarea,stone(withindoorsandoutdoorsmaterialsarea)andanactivefoundry------isalsoavailable.Printmakersmaychoosetoworkwithintaglio,lithography,photoprocesses,reliefandmultimediainspecially---designedstudiospacesequippedforpapermaking.NewGenretechnologiesarealsoavailable.Othermediasuchasmixedmediaandinstallationareencouraged.Allgraduatestudentsareprovidedwithstudiospace.These15’x20’studiosarecentrallylocatedintheartbuilding.Environmentalworksandsculpturalinstallationsmaybebuiltbothindoorsandonthebuildinggrounds.
Theartbuildingalsohousestwogalleriesandanartlibrary;TheArtGallery,anindependentunitthatworkscloselywiththeDepartmentofArt,featuresnationalandinternational,contemporaryandhistoricalexhibitions,aswellastheannualMFAThesisshows.
TheHermanMarilGalleryisastudent---organizedgallerythatfeaturesstudentexhibitions,lectures,specialprojectsandaspaceforsocialactivities.TheArtLibrary,separatefromthelargeresearchlibrariesoncampus,hasanoutstandingcollectionofbooks,catalogs,periodicalsandreproductions,allindexedoncomputerandCD---ROMsystems.Alsohousedwithinthebuildingisthewell---equippedElectronicMediaCenter(EMC).

TheMasterofFineArtsProgram
TheDepartmentofArtattheUniversityofMarylandhasaninternationallyrecognizedMFAprogram.Sincethemid---1970’sgraduatesfromtheMFAProgramhavesucceededintheartworld,withtheirworkbeingrecognizedbymuseums,galleries,criticalpublications,theNationalEndowmentfortheArtsandothergrantingorganizations.Inaddition,manygraduateshavereceivedteachingappointmentsatmajorinstitutionsacrossthecountry.
TheMFAdegreeisintheterminaldegreeinstudioart.ItisnotsimplyanextensionofundergraduatestudythatiscommonlyassociatedwithmanyotherMaster’sdegrees.TheapplicationprocessfortheMFAdegreeisverycompetitiveandfollowsrigorousadmissionsstandards.TheDepartmentofArtisactivelyseekingstudentswhohavedevelopedacoherentbodyofartworkthatdemonstratesanunderstandingofcontemporarydiscourseinthefieldoftheFineArts.Thisbodyofartworkistheprimarybasisforadmittance.Onlythehighestlevelofundergraduateartisticachievementisappropriateforgraduateapplication.AlthoughmanyofourMFAstudentscomedirectlyfromundergraduateprograms,anevenlargernumberarereturningtograduateschoolafteraperiodofindependentartisticdevelopment.

TheDavidC.DriskellCenterfortheStudyoftheVisualArtsandCultureofAfricanAmericansandtheAfricanDiaspora.Establishedin2001,theCenterprovidesanintellectualhomeforartists,museumprofessionals,artadministrators,andscholars,whoareinterestedinbroadeningthefieldofAfricanDiasporicstudies.TheDriskellCenteriscommittedtocollecting,documenting,andpresentingAfricanAmericanartaswellasreplenishingandexpandingthefield.
TheArtGalleryisanindependentunitthatworkscloselywiththeDepartmentofArtaswellastheDepartmentofArtHistory.LocatedwithintheArt---Sociologybuilding.Thestaff,whichincludesafull---timedirectorandassociatepersonnel,organizesandhostsmajorexhibitionsofhistoricalandcontemporaryart.Inthe“Crosscurrents”series,theGalleryinvitesguests’curatorstoorganizecontemporaryexhibitionseachyear.HeldforthebenefitoftheUniversitycommunityandthegeneralpublic,theexhibitionsalsoattractcriticalattention.
TheHermanMarilArtGallery,whichisstudent---organizedandmanaged,providesauniquespaceforbothgraduateandundergraduatestudentexhibitionsaswellasaforumfordiscussionandsocialinteraction.Otheractivitiesinthispaceincludespecialteachingprojects,films,seminars,slidelecturesandperformances.
