Internal Audit Track at Media Finance Focus 2018 NMIA – New Media Internal Auditors Meeting in Conjunction with MFM/BCCA

The Association of New Media Internal Auditors (NMIA) is a non-profit organization established in the 1970s to provide educational and networking opportunities for internal auditors in the media industry. The goal of the NMIA is to further the professional development of its members by creating a forum for the exchange of ideas. One of the ways the group achieves this goal is an annual educational conference at which members learn about and discuss issues relevant to internal audit as well as the publishing, broadcast, cable, and other media industries. NMIA members will be able to take advantage of the discounted group rate for 10 or more attendees ($1,205/person). For more information please call the MFM Office at 847.716.7000.

The agenda is being assembled -- it will include a focus on tax laws that are in a state of change, as well as roundtables that will tackle federal and state tax issues. The session structure will be similar to that of previous years. CPE credits are available at all sessions. The Early Bird registration rate for the 2-day MIT group event will be $1,015. If you would like to attend the entire conference you will pay the applicable rate. (Rates will increase significantly after April 9). "At the MFM conference, we learned of a technique an industry peer was using which allowed us to save $2.5M/annually in credit card fees. After the conference, that peer was able to walk us thru their implementation process which was very helpful in smoothing the roll-out in our company." --Mike Lavey, SVP/Corporate Controller, tronc, Inc.

SSppoottlliigghhtt IInntteerrvviieeww…… MFM Young Professional

Kaila Mitchell, Manager of Operations & Business Planning Company: ABC11/WTVD/Disney

• What is your current position and main job responsibilities? o I’m the Manager of Operations & Business Planning at ABC11/WTVD in

Raleigh/Durham. I have the honor of working with a fantastic team of department heads and managers to ensure that as a station, we continue to meet our financial and mission goals.

• How long have you worked in media? o I started at WTVD in March of 2014, such a huge change from public accounting! And my local news

consumption has grown exponentially since then.

• How did you get involved with MFM and what do you benefit the most from by being a member? o My boss suggested that I join soon after I started at the station. It was a great way for me to learn about the

industry and connect with people outside our station group. At the time, the Young Professionals committee had not started so I chose one that peaked my interest. It happened to be the Interactive and Digital Committee. I will tell anyone that I am NOT an expert in that area, but I find it fascinating.

• How do you think young professional members can help grow MFM? o Young Professionals are THE FUTURE of MFM. We should continue to grow our YP base, and encourage

participation and integration throughout the entire organization as much as possible. Millennials make up the majority of the current workforce. It would be exciting to see that reflected in our membership base and committee participation. Individually, we need to ask ourselves, “What do I want or expect from MFM?” Then it’s our responsibility to own that, get involved and make it happen.

• Where do you get the majority of your news from? What platform and source? o I get the majority of my news on air from ABC11 when I’m at work. On the go, it’s our ABC11 News app

and CNN app notifications, Top Stories from the News app on my iPhone, my Facebook feed, and NPR on my brief commute.

• How do you discover new programming content and what shows are on your must-watch list? o I don’t have cable at home so we watch shows on Netflix, HBO NOW and Hulu. I’m still on a high from the

last season of Game of Thrones. I also loved watching Aziz Ansari in Master of None. And I can’t wait for West World to come back on. We are currently watching The Good Place for comic relief.

• What are you most looking forward to in the industry in the next 1-2 years? o I feel like we are on a high speed train called the “digital transformation.” We’re along for the ride, but we’re

on the roof, Tom Cruise style from Mission Impossible. It’s a rush for sure! I’m looking forward to the “next big thing” and continuing to be a part of the broadcast evolution.

• What do you find most interesting about working in media? o No day is the same and there’s no time to be bored!

• How do you like to spend your time outside of work?

o I like how you phrased the question. There is time at work and outside of work, rarely is there “free time”! My husband’s schedule is fairly hectic right now since he is pursuing his dream and growing his business. I catch up with him late at night and we’ll watch our favorite shows. Most of my time outside of work is spent with the 2 most adorable girls in the entire world, my daughters Eillie (5) and Anna (2). Lucky for me, I’m into spontaneous dance parties, Disney movie nights, dressing up like a princess and pizza for dinner. It’s a win all around. I do wonder if they will be mad at me in 10 years for sharing all the ridiculous photos we take on social media. Time will tell!
