Black Spinner:

Lapel Badge Description: On the First of August 1967 Mr. Brian Smyth, the then Club Solicitor and foundation member, presented the committee with a Deed which laid down the guidelines of the requirements to be an eligible nomination for what was to become the Penultimate Award of this Club. It stated, WHERE AS: in order to stimulate interest in competition amongst its members and to recognise special achievements and to show its appreciation of services rendered to it the Club, it resolved to institute a special form of award which will be known as the Black Spinner Award

In the 50 years since, only 99 Spinners have been presented. This is not a trophy that you win, it is an award that is earned over a long period of involvement in all areas of the Club, and with the recommendation of your peers, followed by the Special Awards scrutiny its recommendations are then placed before the main committee who have the final say on the granting of this most prestigious and dearly cherished Award.

The following are the updated guidelines that the Special Awards Committee and the Board take into consideration regarding this Award. All nominations must be in writing and include evidence of wins, length of service, other evidence (i.e. sub committees etc.) and forwarded to the Special Awards Committee.

The form of the Award shall be a radiator badge in the general form of a "knock on" wheel spinner bearing the M.G. monogram in the centre, flanked on the left by the word "Car" and on the right "Club", the lettering and the surround of the badge being of chromed metal and the remainder of the front being filled with black witness enamel.

RULES:

All nominations shall be in writing addressed to “the Secretary of the Special Awards Committee”.

Nominations must be supported by evidence of entitlement to the Award. The onus of establishing entitlement rest with the applicant.

The Secretary shall keep and maintain records of all nominations whether successful or not. Each Award shall be numbered consecutively in order of presentation.

No member shall be eligible for more than one Award. In the event that an Award is lost or destroyed, it shall be replaced at the recipients cost by an Award bearing the same number as the original.

Eligibility/Grounds for consideration:

All financial or life members of the M.G. Car Club may apply on any of the following grounds:-

The nominee has won outright, not less than 15 Victorian competitive motor events of the Club;

Doug Hastie Award:

Description: This trophy was presented to the T Register by Brian Smyth - a Club Stalwart & Club Solicitor who helped get the club started in the late '50s. It is awarded annually to the T Register driver who is the highest achiever in the Club Drivers Competition in a T Type. It was named after Doug Hastie by Brian as up until it was created; he was the most consistent user of a T Type and set the example for other T Type owners to emulate. The intent of the award is to reward attendance and participation in designated non speed club events and activities in a T Type MG. Where an individual’s T Type is unserviceable and they attend in a borrowed car they are still eligible for points at the discretion of the T Register Committee. This is not the case however for sharing a car, with the exception of navigators in the Winter 100, where both driver and navigator if a T Type owner are eligible. The award year commences in December each year with the first non-speed club event and concludes with the last non-speed Club event in November (if held). Attending XPAGMUS will not gain award points. Scoring taken from T-Type class points score in Club Competition. Le Mans Award:

Perpetual Trophy

Keepsake

Description: In June 1955 it was the intention of 'John Thornley Company' to announce the release of the new MGA and then run three of them in the Le Mans a few days later. Due to delays in the body work tooling the Le Mans entries were taken up by three prototypes, which were almost identical to the actual road cars. This trophy is named in honour of this event and venue. The award is presented to a member of the “MGA” Register who contributes significantly in a number of Club and non-Club activities such as general public activities that have advanced the reputation and status of the Register, along with the overall wellbeing of the MG Car Club Victoria. John Thornley Award:

Perpetual Trophy

Keepsake

Description: The first MG Car Club was formed in England in 1930 when a group of private owners of MGs decided to join forces. After their first meeting, the elected secretary, John Thornley, visited the MG factory and met with the Managing Director, Cecil Kimber, to advise him of the clubs existence and to seek support. Kimber was quick to recognize the advantages of an active club helping to promote the use of his product. He offered Thornley a job in the MG Service Department which Thornley accepted. Thornley became Managing Director in 1953 and remained in the role until his retirement in 1969. He was in-charge when the MGB was released in 1962 - a new design by Sidney Enever. John Thornley was also the Chairman of the MG Car Club for many years until his death in 1993.

The award recipient will be selected by the B Register Committee giving consideration to B Register Members participating and assisting at MGCC events throughout the calendar year. B Register Committee Members are ineligible.

6/8 Trophy:

Description:

This award is called the 6/8 Trophy as the 'C' type is a 6 cylinder and the V8 is an 8 cylinder. The highlight of the Register year is the annual weekend touring during August commemorating the birthday of the MGB-GT- V8. Again, the emphasis is on having fun and enjoyment rather than amassing a lot of points. However, there is a perpetual trophy sponsored by the Register and based upon points for attendance at club meetings and/or events attended. Events include EMRs, the Twilight Tour, V8/C events, MG Car Club events and gazette rallies. No member can win the trophy in consecutive years. To participate all you have to do is register your attendance by seeking out and signing the C/V8 register book.
