To recapotulate, my Union submitted their grievances and demands to the employers (Namely- African Explosives and Industries Ltd. and others, by means of a Memorandum which was forw rded to them on the 5th April 1 9 ^ .

In addition, my Union submitted this same Memorandum which is dated 5th April I 9M1, to the laDour Department with a request that the Department should take up the complaints and demands with the employers . This was subsequently followed by numerous correspondence and a deputation to the Divisiobal Inspector on the 27th October, I9^!t, but as yet have not heard whether this request has be^n gsanted or not.

The following are the grievances and demands of the workers conc^rned:-

(1) That as in other industries wage machinery should be introduced so as to have the conditions of work regulated.

(2) That the workers should be provided with protective clothing such as overalls, 000ts, goggles, particu larly those engaged in that portion of the factories where they have to handle poisonous substances.

( 3 ) That trie workers hhaiild oe given annual leave of 3 days with f\ill pay and that such payment be paid before leave ia taken, and at the completion of twelve months’ service.

{b) That there should be no victimization against any worker on the grounds that he is a memeear of the Trade Union.

(g) That the ce lls situated within the premises of the teodderfontein factory be demolished.

W e certifj that to the best of our knowledge and belief and on information supplied to us, the aboveJ ls^M arch I 9 « 3 Statfiment of the Rev^nue and Expenditure of the Bantu Sports Club, for he year ended

\trntlTS iQjr, W A KE LY-SM ITH & H AR T,12th October. 1945. Chartered Accountants ( S .A . f

and F. J. Modibedi, the Transvaal Cups by Mrs. R. G. Baloyi. Mrs. A . B. Madie Hall Xuma made congratulatory remarks on behalf of the Lady guests. The takings at the gale topped all previous records — gross-takings being £345 in one afternoon. W e have every reason to be proud of this achievement for it has gone far to demonstrate that when Africans get recreational opportunities they are capable of supporting their own games.

BUILDINvjS: If South A frica cannot afford decent homes for her ten million people as Mr. Paton once said, “ we must at least afford gathering places where people can meet together — social centres, playing fields, cinemas, and swimming baths, where people can laugh and play together and fcrget as much of their sorrows as they can.

Over a third of our members are engaged in some sport or another and the increase in our membership is a sign that, given the right kind of premises, there will be notable development in such fields as music, physical cu.ture, bcxing, hockey, adult education, and finer arts. The only impediment to this expan.oicn has been the practical difficulty of suitable accommodation in a small building such as ours. W e need a modern club house equipped to meet our ever expanding activities.

Little as we desire to add another to the multitude of appeals for donations, we feel that the B ANTU SPORTS CLUB BUILDING FUND is a fund to which pub ic spiri'.ed people throughout South A frica will wish to subscribe. Every shilling wi!l help to the success of this venture and its success is essential if it is to be, as we believe it may be, the first step toward r. bigger and more varied plan for African Recreation in South Africa. Donations of any size will be welcomed by the Hon. Treasurers, Howard Pim & Hardy 107 Exploration Bldgs., Commissioner Street, Johannesburg.

GFIOUNDS: Our 'wo football grdrnds and the six tennis courts are kept busy right through the year. Even the vacant grassy plots have not escaped the thud and beating of the feet and drums of the Zulu, Mandebele, and Bapedi W ar Dancer. Our Tennis courts requi;e re-surfacing, and our football grounds reciuire turfing to save the coming up of stones and old pieces of zinc. The question is whether the turf can stand the hard use to which the ground will be put by the congested all-year-through fixtures. The Club is fortunate in procuring the services of an expert Tennis court groundsman in Mr. Izal: D amini. Our old Groundsman, Isaiah Thema, who has been wich the Club long before the Club House was erected since 1929, is well-stricken in years now and is finding the work strenuous. Mr. Ben Msibi, who has been our night watchman has been seconded to understudy Ntate-Thema. This arrangement works well and the repairs on our fence are being maintained satisfactorily.

STAFF: The improvement in membership and the influence the Club is gaining from all walks of life are a tribute to the painstaking efforts of our Manager, Mr. D. R. Twala, and his five assistants. W e wish to place on record our appreciation of their services.

F INANCE: The Club accounts now before you show that the financial position is satisfactory. There has been an increase in revenue in all departments of our activities except the refreshments, which have dropped by £80, owing to lack of a good catering assistant and to the high cost of foodstuffs,

TH A N K S : W e wish to thank the firm of Howard Pim & Hardy particularly Mr. G. H. R. Edrv-nds, for taking interest in the Club and for valuable assistance in the administrative work cf the Club.

W e wish to thank the European P r e s s --- the “ Star.** Rand DailyMail, the S.A. Outlook, and Arthur Barlow’s W eekly for publicity given to the work done at the Club.

W e wish to thank the industrial, mining, and commercial houses that have continued ;o pay the membership fees for their A frican labourers.

Space does not permit of detailed acknowledgments to all who have supported the Club by giving their time, service, and financial assistance.

R. G. BALO YI, Chairman.

D. R. T W A L A , Secretary.
