What is Maranatha Ministries?

Budgeting Classes: Covering the importance of budgeting, budget setup, using credit wisely, consequences of credit, and how to set financial goals.

Budgeting Counseling: Using scriptural precepts for individuals and families experiencing serious financial difficulties, teaching them how to set up a budget, how to stick to a spending plan, how to negotiate with creditors to make payments that suit the clients income, teaching them how to overcome adversity so they can improve their life and become self-sufficient, how to balance a check book and any other education needed.

Representative payee services: Assisting individuals receiving Social Security Disability payments, which at the time are court ordered, to better budget expenses and to ensure that basic needs such as rent, food, utilities are met, as many of these individuals are taken advantage of because they are not capable of doing this themselves.

Transitional Housing: A structured 18-24 month program where we assist homeless families (with children) with housing, by providing temporary housing and either giving them supportive services, such as obtaining their GED if they have not finished school or our food pantry or referring them to the correct agency for job placement, daycare, etc. We help them with budgeting their money, saving for the future, help provide or refer them for all other life skills to help the families to achieve self-sufficiency so they become a part of the community and not return to being homeless again.

Pennsylvania Housing Counseling: Assist families and individuals in danger of mortgage foreclosure. Grace and truth Fellowship: Counsel and minister healing in individuals and families, who are broken,

through Jesus Christ. Candleheart: A structured faith-based three to six month program to help individuals and small families, who

are really serious about changing their life, to become self-sufficient. Maranatha Food Pantry: Serving low-income and needy individuals and families. Guardian of Life: Guardianship and Power of Attorney for the elderly. To help maintain a quality of life for

those unable to help themselves. To make decisions and choices without sacrificing dignity and respect. With the love of Jesus Christ each person can pass over to everlasting life.

What does Candle Heart do?

Candle Heart takes homeless people and families into a full immersion program where they are given living facilities and food while under going a Bible based education on life skills.

It is the Maranatha Ministries philosophy that most of the people who lose their homes are actually victims of immoral lifestyles that promote short sighted living.

In Candle Heart, people are taught how to live by moral principles that promote responsible living in a 24/7 environment.

How does Candle Heart do Business?

Candle Heart enrolls people into 3-6 month programs to help get them from homelessness to successfully providing homes and incomes for themselves and their families.

Candle Heart receives grants and donations to pay for all associated costs.

Craig Newcommer wants Candle Heart to one day be totally free of government grants by being totally funded by private donations.

Page 7: Mgmt 321 nonprofknox

Is Candle Heart successful?

Candle Heart enrolls 12-18 people in 3-6 month programs.

Not every person graduates the program, some drop out.

But of all enrolls, 95% have successfully turned their lives around, and they attribute the change to their time spent at Candle heart.

What is Candle Heart’s concerns for doing business?

Few people really know about Candle Heart.

Public perception about Candle Heart tends to be bad. People tend to think of Candle Heart as a halfway house or homeless shelter.

Bad public perception means, and lack of public knowledge mean few donations.

Page 9: Mgmt 321 nonprofknox

What is Candle Heart’s budget?

Candle Heart runs on approximately $405,000 a year

80% of this money comes from government grants

The other 20% comes from private donations made by individuals, churches, and businesses.

Page 10: Mgmt 321 nonprofknox

What are Candle Heart’s expenses?

Candle Heart uses 60% of its income on staff salary

Candle Heart uses 20% of its income on operation costs, such as rent and utilities

Candle Heart uses the last 20% of its income on rehabilitation and education resources for its clients

Candle Heart spends no money on marketing or advertising.

Page 11: Mgmt 321 nonprofknox

What does this mean? This means that Candle Heart uses all of

its government grant money just to stay in business.

This means that all of the life changing resources that Candle Heart uses to help 95% of its clients to successfully get off of the streets come from private donations

This means that changing public perception about Candle Heart is vital to its mission.

How can I help Candle Heart’s Leadership Strategy?

I recommended to Craig Newcommer several ways that Candle Heart can market itself as a rehabilitation center instead of a homeless shelter.

Hopefully this marketing will build public knowledge and positive perception.

Page 13: Mgmt 321 nonprofknox

News Paper I advised Craig to enlist

his successful graduates to write their testimonies about Candle Heart down, highlighting where they came from, and where they are now. He can then submit these testimonies to local Newspapers across the county and in surrounding areas for inexpensive ad space, or donation ad space.

Page 14: Mgmt 321 nonprofknox

Video Craig mentioned to

me that he had thought about having a DVD made that showed the ministry at work. I told him that he could also include testimonial videos on the DVD and his website.

Page 15: Mgmt 321 nonprofknox

Blog I told Craig that he

could get positive attention if he allowed his clients to blog about their Candle Heart experience on his website. This will show the transformation from homeless to self sufficient.

Page 16: Mgmt 321 nonprofknox

Forum I also mentioned to

Craig that he could bring more attention to the successful Candle Heart graduates by allowing the to write in a forum on the website. This would add value to the program image and to the current clients who could find inspiration from the success stories.

Page 17: Mgmt 321 nonprofknox

Local Parades Local parades

showcase community organizations, schools, and clubs. Having some of the successful program graduates ride in a car in the parade with a graduate banner will help show what a program success looks like.

Page 18: Mgmt 321 nonprofknox

How will this help? By changing pubic focus from negative

stereotypes to positive program outcomes

Public opinion of Candle Heart will go from a negative view of a homeless shelter or half way house, to a successful rehabilitation center.

With increased positive public perception and public knowledge, Candle Heart should be able to look forward to more donations.

Page 19: Mgmt 321 nonprofknox

What is Candle Heart’s future?

Due to an anonymous donation, Candle Heart purchased a 5 story abandoned building and property next to its current location.

Craig plans to out fit the building to house 180 clients, state and church offices for client help, and a full employment training center.

Donations will be all the more vital to this program and its vision for the future.
