Mera Gao Power
A Rural Lighting Utility
… serving India’s rural poor
What we do
MGP builds and operates solar powered micro grids in Uttar Pradesh.
The first commercial facility was installed in December 2011.
As of October 2014, MGP serves priority energy services to over 15,000 households in more than 1,200 villages.
Who We Serve
In India, 400 million people lack access to
electricity.
The state of Uttar Pradesh has a
population of 200 million, 63% of which
are rural and unelectrified.
MGP serves poor, rural populations that
have monthly household incomes
between RS. 3,000-8,000 ($50 to $80).
Business
Model Innovation
Utility company, not a product company
Risk free for customers; company takes on the financial risk on the premise that customers demand the service.
Utility is lighting, not power
MGP provides customers with the services they prioritize. In this way, off-grid power becomes commercially viable.
Solar powered micro grids provide families with nighttime lighting
Social Benefits
As a result of the quality indoor lighting they now receive:
• families save money they would have spent on kerosene,
• children are able to study,
• parents are able to work and earn more income, and
• household air is cleaner.
Environmental Benefits
MGP’s micro grids are renewable powered
and replace dirty kerosene in customer
households.
Reduced kerosene consumption reduces
carbon emissions.
Removing kerosene from the household
creates a safer environment for children
who accidentally drinking it.
Technology
Lowest cost micro grid in operation as
measured by both CAPEX and OPEX.
Four staff can build a village level facility
in one day.
Fully automated.
Commercially viable without subsidies.
Tools
90% of MGP’s operations are identical
to a micro finance institution. Thus
we need MFI type tools.
Customized database with pictorial
interface for uneducated staff to
enter payments.
Mobile app for entering payments in
the field which eliminates the need
to reenter them at the office.
Multiple customers from a single village are assembled into a group. The group pays their utility bills at a predetermined time and place within the village every week.
Collections
A collector visits multiple customer groups each day, collecting from as many as 24 villages in a week.
Multiple collectors are overseen by a branch office. A branch office could oversee 150 villages.
