Project Objectives:• Test the reception of Aqua and/or Terra satellite direct

broadcast data (sample passes) with the MGS• Process the data on station into scientifically usable data• Transmit the results and other derived products back to the

United States via the TDRSS/MTRS link with MGS

New Capabilities for MGS• The following new capabilities have been demonstrated but are

not yet operational• MGS can now receive EOS Direct Broadcasts

- Terra realtime (MODIS)- Aqua realtime (MODIS, AIRS, etc)- Available on McMurdo LAN for IMAPP to process

• Can receive EOS-Aqua playbacks at 150Mbps- Contains same data over an orbit.

• Can now return extremely large files to CONUS

- One-way link to White Sands

- Mail tapes to end user

- Next day as scheduled in advance

• Operational capabilities may require more resources

Direct Broadcast from EOS• MGS now has the capability to receive the realtime,

direct broadcast telemetry from EOS Terra or EOS Aqua

• Key driver was to enable improved weather forecasting– MODIS/AIRS vertical Water Vapor profiles

– Can easily meet the timeliness requirements for forecasting

• Data is recorded from the RAID onto Tapes– Tapes are walked over to a computer on the Internet

– Data is converted to Level 0 and ready for processing by IMAPP software on-site in McMurdo

• Limited by availability of the single aperture

High Volume Data Return to CONUS• Intended to enable data products generated in

McMurdo to get to end users in CONUS– Polar Stereographic Movies (NSF and NASA users)– Also works for any spacecraft telemetry (NASA missions)

• TDRS is available for next day data returns– Extremely high volume files are possible (125Mbps)– Telemetry Files or Data Files– Data received at White Sands (WSC) is taped and tapes

mailed to end user– Alternate DVD-RW option in the works for ~4GB files– Eventual https access from WSC for lower volume files

MGS FY04 - New Capabilities Summary -MGS RAID has been activated and will be incorporated into the MGS automation.-RAID enables 150Mbps data capture from EOS-EOS direct broadcast collection is possible but limited by 10-m antenna availability.-Data returns to CONUS at 125Mbps are working via TDRS.

- TDRSS not interested in meeting timeliness requirements but “next day” is okay-NASA engineering effort now focused on RAID install at WSC and “Demonstration Mode” of RAID to RAID data transfers (via MTRS) from MGS to WSC.

-MGS RAID must remain on Closed for MGS automation operations.-We put WSC RAID on the Internet?

-Internet WSC RAID requires no waiver for RAID to RAID comms.-WSC RAID is always listening for the MGS RAID to start a connection-TCP comms between RAIDs is for acknowledgements only of data through the TDRS link.-Eventually will set up an https log-in for end users to access data on WSC Drive electronically, but that is constrained to low volume data files. -A Tape mailing operation is underway for the very high volume data files

-RAIDs cannot perform a transfer of data when MGS RAID is receiving X-band pass.-RAID will have software to allow remote scheduling.-RAID will perform two types of transfers

-Telemetry transfers (raw data only, can use existing software on RAIDs)-File transfers (allows any type of file for transfer, NASA built software)

-NASA operates the demonstration until NASA decides to turn over to operations.

Potential Upgrades if Funded

• Add a Data-Stripping capability in MCM– Send low volume data to CONUS via Internet– Send bulk data to CONUS via TDRS next day

• Add Second Aperture (fully automated)– Recommend a X/S/L Receive-only 12-ft system– Remove single point failure– Increase number of supports per day

• Electronic access to WSC by end users– Better connectivity is a function of need

Results and Considerations

• Succeeded in getting the telemetry data with MGS

• Problems with preprocessing data & networking

• Didn’t finish the full end to end test – but learned some key issues…

These and other issues can be dealt with.

• MGS network connected to the McMurdo LAN

• Improved computing (AMRC) for handling IMAPP processing & shear large volume of data

• Need to handle data flow back to the US:– TDRSS/MTRS time (24x7?)– Internet (Commercial or

Internet 2?) connection from Windsands/Goddard to end users (NCAR, Wisconsin, etc.)
