Since Barnum in the Spring of 2010, the ShowGram Team has been committed to making green decisions concerning the responsible production of The ShowGram. Some of these decisions include using local printers to reduce fuel costs while shipping, decreasing the overall number of pages, and producing fewer programs. We feel our biggest impact happens by collecting and reusing
the unwanted ShowGrams at the end of each performance. So, please excuse us if you got a less than new ShowGram. We would appreciate it if you would recycle your ShowGram at the end of the show at the door on the way out; baskets will be available. Thank you again for your continued support in all of the MHS Theatre’s accomplishments!
Special Note: The ShowGram has Gone Green!

Advertising Stars:
Director’s NoteLast season, our productions
centered on male characters, namely Stanley Banks in Father of the Bride, and P.T. Barnum in the musical Barnum. This year, I wanted to find plays that focused on strong women and “girl power,” during my research I came across Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. We’ve all learned the lesson that you can’t judge a book by its cover, and in this case, you can’t judge a play by its title.
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is based on the book of the same name by Anita Loos, who is arguably a feminist. The fact that Loos was a feminist and she chose Gentlemen Prefer Blondes as the title of her book led to many thought-provoking discussions with the cast. We concluded that the title is satirical and tongue-in-cheek, as is the plot of the book and the play. Loos’ sarcasm and wit spilled over into her personal life, She once said, “I’m furious about the women’s liberationists. They keep getting up on soapboxes and proclaiming that women are brighter than men. That’s true, but it should be kept very quiet or it ruins the whole racket.”
Throughout the rehearsal process there were so many teachable moments, specifically from a historical perspective. I shared with the cast how my grandmother embraced the fashion of the flapper, and she even
had the audacity to roll her stockings down at the beach. I also told them how my grandmother often recalled the time when women did not have the right to vote, and she explained to me how this privilege is our most precious duty as Americans. My grandmother was a feminist and a flapper, and this led to a discussion on who were the true feminists, suffragists or flappers? We talked about how Aunt Dolly embodies the suffragist struggle, and Lorelei adopted the flapper sensibility. We agreed that both women are strong and independent, two different soldiers marching towards self-awareness and equality. Both characters reject oppression; Aunt Dolly through parades, and Lorelei through fashion and self-discovery. Theatre is communication, and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes offered numerous stimulating conversations about history, the feminist movement, and equality.
Our Theatre program is continuing to thrive with the support of so many talented and dedicated people. I’d like to thank the MHS Administration, our mascot Mr. Bruchac, the TPA, and especially the fabulous cast and crew of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

As the school year approached, I was suddenly filled with fears about the Fall drama. The Thespian Board was in charge of arranging the meeting for the auditions, and I had no idea how the Drama would begin. However, as soon as auditions were held, and the roles were cast, all of my apprehensions disappeared. As the cast got together to read the script for the first time, I could tell that this production would be one to remember. Immediately the cast bonded, and our little ‘theatre family’ quickly embraced its new members. So with an extremely cute and amusing script, the work began.
Because the school year began so late, everyone seemed frantic and concerned about the amount of time we had to put the show together. Blocking began right after the casting was completed, and in just a couple weeks, the entire show was done. This came with an incredible amount of relief, as well as respect for the determination
and talent of my colleagues. Everyone in this show has put in an amazing effort in order to make our performances of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes as great as they are. Sitting in rehearsal everyday, watching all the actors pour their hearts into their roles, allows me to see just how incredible the theatre community is, and why we all love it so much. Even through the long, tiresome rehearsals, and hell week, which never seems to end, the group of students I see everyday and their collaborative passion for the arts makes even the lowest points of production time worth while. It has been incredible being a part of the High School’s Fall Drama, and even though I am sorry it has to end, I am tremendously proud to present our production of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

Break a leg!
The Morristown High School ShowGram has been recognized for its professional quality and graphic design; most recently, nominated by the Paper Mill Playhouse’s Rising Star Awards in Spring 2010. This recognition is a testament to all the hours the students put in to the MHS ShowGram.
The same students you see on stage and behind the scenes are the same students who begin early in the season working mornings, late afternoons, and countless hours spent rearranging ads, typing up bios, checking and double-checking information; ultimately finishing with the program you hold in your hands. Being involved in the design process of this ShowGram has proven the dedication, teamwork, and creative ingenuity of the Theatre students at Morristown High School. We hope that our efforts produce what will be a memorable ShowGram for parents, students actors and the community audience members.
With that being said, we would all like to thank all the MHS Theatre members involved in the program’s creation. From all the ShowGram crew, please enjoy the show!
