BY JESSICA FUENTES On October 30th, the Emerging Leadership Council held their monthly “Lunch With an Expert” at Café Avanti. Over 60 business professionals gathered to listen to our new Chairman of the Board, Alan A. Lips, making it one of the most successful lunches of the series. The inti- mate event was moderated by Past Chair of the Chamber and owner of Miami Fashion Week Aaron Perry. Aaron began Alan’s introduction by stating that “without Alan’s leadership on the Board, this Chamber would not be where it is today.” Together, they make for a truly dynamic duo in and out of the boardroom, so much so that they easily provided listeners with a sense of intimacy and comfort. Alan Lips was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. Miami Beach was always his favorite place to visit, and ironically he fell in love with a girl during college that was from here. They moved here post-gradua- tion, got married, and now have three beau- tiful children. He still considers Miami Beach the best place in the world. Alan adds passion and a personal approach to everything that he does. As a partner at Gerson, Preston and Robinson, one of the most successful accounting firms in South Florida, Alan’s area of focus is International Tax. “One way or another, everyone is touched by people coming from South America,” says Lips, adding “they just don’t get the right advice.” Alan distinguishes himself from others by becoming that reliable source who meets with clients since day one, and builds an effective structure that works personally for their family and business. One of Alan’s primary focuses is giving back to the community. In addition to his leadership in the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, he co-chaired and established the Young Founders of Mount Sinai Hospital with an interest and goal in pro- viding care to people who cannot afford it. Everyone in attendance listened care- fully to every word and left with a clear understanding of the local political races and the numerous proposed amendments. Thank you, Michael, for your devotion to the highest quality journalism with the most accurate and unbiased opinions on the complicated politics of today! We were also fortunate to have the Women’s Business Council “Breakfast with a View” at the Forge with University of Miami President Donna Shalala. What an asset we have right here in South Florida with such an incredible and high-ranking educational institution! benefit the Miami Beach EducationFoundation by providing local schools withmuch-needed healthcare and nursing servic-es to help detect childhood health issues. Theprogram will aid in directly combating theexisting obesity epidemic, as many chronicconditions currently going untreated at localschools are symptoms of being overweight.

“This was an awesome community effortthat truly demonstrates the power of mem-bership,” said Chamber President and CEOJerry Libbin.

Through the Aetna Voices of Healthcampaign, which aims to close racialand ethnic health care quality gaps andhelp people lead healthier lives, the pub-lic was able to cast votes from Augustuntil October for their favored nominat-ed non-profit organization. The MiamiBeach Education Foundation finished infirst place with 205,629 votes; comingin at second was the Dallas Mayor’sYouth Fitness Initiative at 168,657votes. Although still new, this year’scampaign experienced some growthcompared to 2011, the year the programwas established: last year’s 636,539total votes grew to 718,354 in 2012.Aetna reports that this year’s campaignalso included international votes from

the United Kingdom, Costa Rica,Canada, Japan, Mexico, Australia,Germany and France!

“We are thrilled by the number of votesand the amount of public involvement inthis year’s Aetna Voices of Health cam-paign,” said Floyd W. Green III, Aetna’shead of Community Relations and UrbanMarketing. “The Miami Beach ChamberEducation Foundation is one of the nation’stop community groups ensuring that adultsand children are educated about the variousissues that impact their health. We areinspired by their efforts and proud to sup-port them.”

The Chamber was equally thrilled, as thenews quickly spread from member to member.

“The Miami Beach Chamber ofCommerce Education Foundation is honoredto collaborate with Aetna on this initiative,which allows us to harness our very activecommunity to help meet the need for healthcare in our local schools,” said Alan Lips,Chairman of the Miami Beach Chamber ofCommerce. “The tremendous response fromour community and business leaders support-ed us in our victory and we thank themall…as well as Aetna on behalf of our stu-dents, who will now receive the care theydeserve.”

I must also mention our Pillar Networkerat Baoli: I was almost blown away just try-ing to get there as a result of HurricaneSandy. Well, Sandy didn’t stop me or 120other members from coming out and net-working and having a great time. We mustbe doing something right to get that kind ofturnout!

And of course, we started ourMembership Drive on October 1st, with agoal of bringing in 100 new members inthree months. We have four teams: Chamber

staff, membership committee, Pillar Boardand the Board of Governors. Having differ-ent teams is the key ingredient: this createssuch a healthy, competitive spirit and greatcomradery amongst the team members.Even greater are the relationships made fromthe teams! Well, evidently we have greatnews for the first month. We are only onemonth into a three month drive and arealready 80% there. This is a testament to thegreat things that this Chamber does, and Iencourage everyone to get involved andexperience the power of membership.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancerdeaths among both men and women –responsible for more deaths each year thanbreast, colon and prostate cancer combined.In the U.S., tobacco use still accounts for 87percent of lung cancer deaths; and, smokersare up to 30 times more likely to developlung cancer than non-smokers are. However,when diagnosed early, more than 90 percentof lung cancers can be cured with promptsurgical intervention. In an effort to savemore lives from this disease, Mount SinaiMedical Center has developed a lung cancerscreening program that aims to diagnoselung cancer in its earliest possible stage.

People often look at net-working as a tired term, but itcan be your stepping stone togreater influence, ultimately,referrals. When meetingsomeone new, here are 7proven steps to improve yournetworking ability:

1. INTRODUCE YOURSELF CLEARLY AND CONCISELY

Though this may see obvious, it is oftenoverlooked or done poorly. First, say yourname and company, and then ask the samefrom your listener.

2. BE SPECIFIC ABOUT YOUR LINE OF WORK

Don’t say, “I’m in computers,” or “I’min travel.” Instead be specific. For exam-ple, “My firm specializes in local area net-works for the real estate industry. Or, “Wefocus on the lowest possible fares for lawfirms that fly their lawyers on short notice,and we can get them waivers and favorsreduce their bottom lines.”

3. ORGANIZE YOUR INTRODUCTIONPrepare a 15-second opening statement

that describes what you do. If your productor service is technical or hard to explain,begin with a 15 to 20-second story thatillustrates what you do. Stories help createand maintain listener interest.

4. INFORM, DON’T SELLDon’t come on with a sales pitch. When

in doubt, remember a low key introductionis always better.

5. BE YOURSELFNot being you can make you look silly,

artificial, or worse. Learn what makes peo-ple receptive and master that. There is nosubstitute for authenticity.

6. BE AN AVID LISTENERWhen someone’s is speaking, it’s tempt-

ing to be thinking of your response. Butcareful listening builds goodWill, trust,and confidence.

7. FOLLOW-UPAlways send a personal note to follow-

up your conversations. It is unlikely yourlistener will need your product or serviceimmediately. But don’t be surprised whenthey make the call and say “1 really appre-ciated your note when we met last.”

You only have one chance at a firstimpression. An effective networker can’tafford to waste that opportunity.

Daniel Craig sheds some light on SkyfallBY LAUREN COHEN

There aren’t manysights more surreal thanthat of Daniel Craig,dressed in a crisp, Bond-esque suit, walkingtoward you. So to thenhave the opportunity tospeak with 007 himself –

well, you can imagine what that was like.Most surprising, though, was the realiza-tion that Craig has a real sense of humorunderneath that slick veneer. It’s that sub-tle, dry humor that he demonstrated in per-son that makes “Skyfall,” the latest entryinto the 50-year-old James Bond franchise,one of the most fun Bond films yet.

I recently sat down with him to discussthe film, the state of the next “Girl With theDragon Tattoo” movie (“I’m very opti-mistic that it might possibly happen maybesomeday,” he joked), as well as his role inthe London Olympics opening ceremony,Bond’s chauvinistic tendencies, and all theimmense praise that “Skyfall” has beenreceiving.

This is your second time working with

director Sam Mendes, first on “Road to

Perdition,” and now on “Skyfall.” What

was it like working with Sam again? Did

you guys have any communication

between those two films?

Daniel Craig: Not a great deal. I’d seeSam, you know, here and there. I’d do the-atre sometimes and he’d come and see mein that…I saw him at a party and I kind ofoffered him the job [to direct “Skyfall”],which is not my place to do. One too manydrinks. I always thought if it hadn’t workedout I could just blame the booze…It waseasy and that conversation that I had withhim that night really was the start of it. Hewas being very complimentary aboutCasino [Royale], and I wanted to pick hisbrains as a director – because I knew wewere going to start thinking about the nextfilm – and I wanted to pick his brains aboutwhat we could do, and how we could makeit better, and I had all these ideas and webounced them off each other a little bit andI kind of sort of said: “Do you want to doit, why don’t you do it?” and so he did.

We learn a lot more about the charac-

ter of James Bond in this movie than we

have in previous films – how did you

approach that?

Craig: You know it’s easy to say now,but I always felt that we could explorehim…you read the books, I mean theywere written a long time ago so I suppose

that kind of in a way they’re dated, but theystill stand up as good reads. And Flemingreally does explore the characters – there’sa lot of self doubt there, I mean he killspeople for a living, it bothers him…I keepsaying that no one told me what the ruleswere, as far as action and adventure movieswere concerned. I always thought that youcould have a plot, and therefore a charac-ter…I never forget I’m playing JamesBond, this isn’t a character study. It’s giv-ing somebody who is closed off, lettingkind of a little bit go occasionally just sothat we see in, and see him knocked downso that we can see him stand back up again.Those things, I think, hopefully, make forjust a more enjoyable movie…that’s thething about an action movie, where youhave a hero. The world needs saving at thebeginning of the movie, and at the end ofthe movie he saves the world. I wanted todo a bit more than that.

A lot of people have expressed opti-

mism that this could be the first Bond

movie to receive a Best Picture nomina-

tion. Are you confident in this? Do you

think a Bond movie could ever achieve

this?

Craig: I never would speculate aboutstuff like that. It’s very nice, one of thenicest things. I can’t lie, when the pressstarted to come out it was a huge relief forme. Because you invest a large part of yourlife — as did many people — in this film.I knew we had a good film, but who knowshow people are going to respond to it. Ithink that to sort of speculate now wouldbe a little bit jumping the gun. There are

some great movies out there this year, andthere are some more movies to come outthis year that are going to be good. I hopethat people like [cinematographer] RogerDeakins are in the mix somewhere becausehe’s done such an amazing job, and itwould be nice to see him get a nomination,or even [win] one.

We spoke with the Bond girls earlier

— we’ve actually decided to start calling

them “Bond ladies.”

Craig: Yes, there you go. We’re movingforward!

Can you speak on your two Bond

ladies in this film?

Craig: Again, with the casting, wecouldn’t have done better, or wished tohave done better. Both Bérénice andNaomie – as well as Judi, we can’t leaveher out of the equation. Naomie was justperfect, I look forward to sort of doingmore with Naomie; she’s got the actionchops as well as the acting chops. AndBérénice is just so gorgeous and exotic anda wonderful actress and I think in way iskind of an old-fashioned Bond girl but is somuch more…I love the fact that Bond stayssort of chauvinistic, I mean I think it’simportant that he does. Otherwise it wouldbe kind of lying to say he’s a modern man,he’s not really a modern man. But puttingstrong women in front him — that makes itexciting, and sexier, I think.

Roger Moore was recently quoted as

saying that you’ll go down as the “best

Bond in history.”

Craig: We love Roger! [laughs]

How does it feel to receive such praise

from a past Bond actor?

Craig: Well it’s very nice; he’s a lovely,lovely man, Roger. He was the first JamesBond I ever saw in the cinema so I supposeI have a real affinity to him and a real softspot for Roger, but he’s also a gentleman.And, you know, I pay him well [laughs].

What was it like working with Danny

Boyle and the Queen on that short for

the London Olympics opening ceremo-

ny?

Craig: All I can really say is, look, I wasvery honored to play just a little part in thatopening ceremony…it was incrediblymoving, the whole opening ceremony andwas perfect. But it was very surreal. I wasat the palace working with the Queen; it’snot kind of something I ever dreamed I’dever do. But she was lovely, just very keento do it and very happy to do it. We laugheda lot. It was very quick, it was kind of overbefore I could think about it, really…and Ihad to keep it very secret though, that’s thething.

Are there any things you’ve learned to

do in the films that you’ve been able to

apply in real life?

Craig: I don’t finish work and go sky-diving as a hobby, or anything like that,no…Some of the things I do in the movieare good fun to do, but they stay in themovie. I get to drive cars and shoot gunsand do all of those things. But, you know, Ican’t drive a car like that without gettingarrested or shoot a gun like that withoutgetting arrested, so I have to leave them atwork.

Don’t you think that people would be

a little more lenient with you though?

Craig: What, if I drove an Aston Martinat 80 mph through Manhattan, shooting agun? No! The NYPD would just basicallythrow me inside after tasering me 100times — with good reason. [laughs]

The 3.7-liter Ti-VCT V-6 uses the6F-50, and the more powerful 3.5-literEcoBoost V-6 gets the heavy-duty 6F-55.This transmission has high-energy frictionmaterials, a larger ring gear and a specifictorque converter that optimize the 6F-55 tohandle the high-torque output of the twin-turbo 3.5-liter. These gearboxes offer thedriver a choice between fully automatic oper-ation and manual control. Unlike some com-petitive transmissions, SelectShift won’t sec-ond guess the driver with an override shift.

The manual control is truly controlled bythe driver.

All-wheel drive is standard with the twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6. In good weather oversmooth roads at modest speeds – when AWDis not needed – the system intelligently routespower only to the front wheels to improvefuel efficiency. When driver input or roadconditions (such as on rain-slicked or snow-covered roads) indicate that slip might occur,the system sends power to the rear wheels tohelp prevent tire slip from happening in thefirst place

A myriad of inputs enables the computer-controlled system to identify and immediate-ly react – in as little as 16 milliseconds – tochanging road conditions and driverdemands. The amount of torque sent to therear axle varies depending on road conditionsand dynamic needs.

The recently con-cluded electionsincluded a questionto the voters inPalm Beach andLee Counties as towhether or not theywished to approveslot machines atpari-mutuel facili-

ties [dog tracks] located within theirrespective counties.

In both cases the measure passedquite convincingly. The rationalebehind these measures was that theywould limit the installation of slotmachines to these two specific loca-tions, would be entirely financed with-

out any public or government funding,and would be a major sources of bothconstruction and full time jobs. Thevoter approval sends a strong messageto Tallahassee that a comprehensivegaming plan must be developed forthe state and that the public is verymuch in favor of certain types of gam-ing at prescribed locations. As thewriter of this column I am able to getthe facts out to the citizens of MiamiBeach.

I am also interested in getting feed-back from Miami Beach residents as totheir views on gaming inside and out-side of our city borders. I look forwardto more interaction with the communityand to getting a better handle on thegaming future of our city, county, andstate.

The change in theweather always meansthat it’s finally the per-fect season to go for arun, and there’s no betterway to do that than inparticipating, and train-ing for the upcoming

Live Ultimate event on Dec. 15 right hereon Miami Beach.

This event, now also held in Los Angelesand San Francisco, has it’s roots here, whenMiami Beach resident Marc Wachter estab-lished it as the “Ocean Beach Run” as away to bring his friends together a fun run.

Last year, the Live Ultimate eventattracted some 2,000 people, and this year,at least 3,000, and perhaps even 4,000 areexpected, says Brian Huberty, the event’schief running officer.

A key to Live Ultimate’s popularity isvariety. The traditional 5K walk/run, whichtakes runners along Ocean Drive, remainsthe cornerstone of the event. But this year,a quarter marathon, has been added,Huberty and Geoff Bagshaw, Equinox’sarea group fitness manager for Florida,

will lead them. They will be held whichtakes runners by the Miami Beach GolfCourse. In addition, there’s also an oppor-tunity for teams to participate, and even aKid’s Dash for children ages two to 10.The day will also include a festive post-event party at Nikki Beach, where trophiesand ribbons will be awarded.

“South Florida is saturated withmarathons and 5K’s, so we added the quar-ter marathon as an exciting new distancethat incorporates a 5K and a 10K as well,”says Hubert. Live Ultimate is the first run-ning event in South Florida to hold a quar-ter marathon, and is probably among thefirst in the state as well, he noted.

My good friend and client Bruce had

good intentions of taking care of his ailing

80-year-old father who came to live with

him. After all, Bruce is a teacher and has

summers off; however, after three sleepless

nights while trying to provide care for his

dad, Bruce hired help. Seven years and

$600,000 later his father passed and during

that process Bruce came to clearly under-

stand that even though his health was excel-

lent , one day it would change and the last

thing he wanted to do was burden his

daughter and spend down his life savings as

his father had done. At age 51, Bruce decid-

ed to buy long term care insurance.

Understanding LTC insurance is like

learning a new language. There are moving

parts and decisions to make. In general, you

can think of it as buying a pool of money or

leveraged dollars. Over a thirty year time

frame Bruce will have paid $51,000 in pre-

miums and will have a benefit worth

$820,000. He hopes he will “waste” every

premium dollar and never need long term

care, but just in case, he now has a plan for

his future, which has also bought him peace

of mind.

My goal is to EDUCATE my clients and

that is what I did with Bruce. I guided him

through this difficult process, and helped

him realize that because one’s health can

change in the blink of an eye, there is a real

need to formulate a backup plan today.

I worked with Bruce in a unique way

using state of the art software and an easy to

use screen sharing program to educate him

on the issues and definitions of LTC insur-

ance. Once we completed that process I

showed him all the insurance companies

available to him in his state. Every insur-

ance company selling LTC insurance

appeared on his computer screen, from the

least to the most expensive .Last of all, I

explained to him how the benefits differed

among the different companies. I complet-

ed this whole process with Bruce without

ever entering his home. When his policy

was approved, I delivered it to him.

So you may ask, was Bruce the right age

to buy LTC insurance? Absolutely! The

younger you are and the better your health,

the lower the premiums. My youngest

client is 38 but most of my clients bought

their insurance in their mid-40s to mid-50s.

If you wait too long certain health condi-

tions become uninsurable.

I must admit that it was well over a year

after his father’s death that Bruce bought

his policy. The next year his 80-year-old

aunt passed, but in addition, his 45-year-old

sister was diagnosed with breast cancer and

also passed that year. Any lingering notion

of denial, of believing that he will never

need care, quickly left his mind. Our health

does change without warning. My good

friend truly had a difficult year.

I ask you to put on your “business hat”

and look at all the assets that you have

accumulated over your lifetime as YOUR

business. Long term care is the greatest risk

you will face down the road. Does it make

sense to protect against this risk?

My ex-husband isalways calling me on hisweekend with the kidscomplaining that the kidsare not doing chores at hishouse, talking back to him,etc. I have tried in the pastto have us work together

on “house rules” so we are consistent in bothhouseholds but it hasn’t worked. I’m tired ofhim calling me and demanding that I step inand do something. What can I do?

What you can do is tell your ex that on hisweekends he needs to handle his householdissues with the children. As with anything thathas to be conveyed, do it nicely, but firmly.Realistically, him bringing you into the mix to“do something” actually takes the poweraway from him as a parent. That is betweenhim and his children. I’m not talking aboutmajor issues when the two of you should beon the same page, but the day-to-day “stuff”can frustrate any parent. When he has the chil-dren, that is your time to give your mind andnerves a break and to rejuvenate so upon theirreturn you are refreshed and on your game.

My ex has taken to picking and choosingwhat he will and will not follow through onaccording to my MSA. What can I do, I’mgetting overwhelmed and frustrated, not tomention exceedingly angry. This was anagreement we both agreed to.

Welcome to the real world. Lesson #1 inthe divorce game is whatever you bothagreed to doesn’t necessarily translate intofollowing it. My suggestions are as follows:1) Take a deep breath and don’t let this con-sume you, because it can if you let it and,quite frankly, that is probably what he wants.2) When he doesn’t follow through on some-thing, send him an email with the infractionlisted in the subject and in a very businesslike fashion, address the infraction referenc-ing the page and paragraph that clearly out-lines his obligation from the MSA. 3) Create

a folder on your desktop for these emails sothey are all in one place. 4) The least expen-sive way to resolve this would be to mediate;but if he is unwilling, I would suggest seek-ing legal counsel to discuss your options. Justremember that divorce is not fair on manydifferent levels and you can lose a lot of hap-piness trying to make it so.

My ex has moved on rather quickly and itappears that he hasn’t missed a beat. Hisbusiness is flourishing, his mistress hasmoved in with him, they travel all the timeand, oh yeah, he got a new car. Meanwhile, Ihave to start all over and am struggling inevery aspect of my life. When is it going to bemy time?

I hear you and I understand. You, my dear,hold that answer and no one else. Your timestarts when you decide it starts. Stop lookingover the fence in his backyard and put thatenergy and focus on your Plan B. First step isto change your thoughts from that of a victimto that of a warrior. You can make a betterway for yourself but it begins with one sim-ple thing — your mindset. Change that andbrace yourself for an amazing ride.

Note to Self: My life begins with me and noone else. I have the power to direct my destiny.
