Summer is upon us, and with our beautiful balmy weather brings al fresco activities from the beach to dining. But, what I like the most are the amazing Stay-cation opportunities at some of the world’s most amazing properties. From Miami Beach to downtown to Coral Gables, take advantage of Spa Month, Miami Spice, visit a museum or take in a play. There is so much to do and the crowds are so much more manageable during our Miami Summer.

Make sure to read our weekly (Thursday) Member PluggedIN Newsletters for special offers. Also, visit GayBizMiami.com for a list of member locations as we all like to S.O.M.A. (Support Our Members Always).

Have a safe and exciting summer!

As Walgreens’ South Florida HIV team leader, I am

constantly impressed with the MDGLCC. Having been

a member for almost a year now, the commitment

and enthusiasm that Steve, Jorge, and Scott display is

contagious. Their understanding of, respect for and dedication

to their members is outstanding. Being a part of MDGLCC has

introduced me and my colleagues to many different facets of our

community that I hadn’t known about before and has provided

many new opportunities for us. My

only regret is not joining earlier,

and I certainly can’t imagine not

being a member going forward!”

Longtime MDGLCC member Laura Maye invites you to visit a true Miami treasure: the Coral Castle Museum, a “modern megalith” listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

First, a bit of history around this unexpected South Florida attraction: a man named Edward Leedskalnin built Coral Castle singlehandedly over the course of three decades. Working only at night and entirely in secret, Ed excavated and carved over 1,100 tons of coral rock without the use of special equipment. To this day, scientists, engineers and scholars are mystified by his achievement; the methods Ed used to create this architectural feat are still unknown.

Billy Idol even wrote a famous song about Coral Castle titled “Sweet Sixteen.”

While you’re there, check out the hand-carved

9-ton gate, Ed’s Polaris telescope, and the world’s only working sundial with seasons. Tours are included in the price of admission. The tour guides share guides share the “Love Story,” explaining the science of it all, and demonstrate how Ed’s items work—even after 93 years. Tours are continuous, so there is no waiting for a tour. They join you with a tour in progress and when one ends, another tour begins. The tour is circular.

You can also grab a bite to eat at the Coral Castle Cafe and pick up some collectibles at the gift shop.

The museum opens daily at 8 a.m., and tickets can be purchased in advance at www.coralcastle.com. Coral Castle is also available for events.

Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that only a third of American adults consume the recommended amount of fruit, and even fewer—a measly 27%—take in an adequate number of vegetables. If done right, juicing can be an excellent summer health program and a simple approach to adding antioxidants to your daily meals. Juicing offers various life-enhancing health benefits; for one, it’s a faster and more efficient means of absorbing the immunity-boosting nutrients that are found in fruits and vegetables. Juicing also allows us to access digestive enzymes typically stored away in the fiber matrix of whole fruits and vegetables. For those of us who tend to steer clear of beets and carrots and cucumbers, juicing can be a fun, alternative approach to increasing plant food consumption, improving overall health and wellness, adopting better eating patterns, and reaching weight loss goals.

One notable drawback, however, is that our bodies do not process liquid calories the same way they process a solid meal; our hunger and appetite hormones respond differently to solid vs. liquid foods. Plus, there are significant benefits of whole foods that are reduced in fruit and vegetable juice, such as fiber, protein, and healthy fats. Most commercial, store-bought juices are processed and lacking in nutrition, so if you’re going to cave in to the craze, be sure to consume fresh juices, which are abundant in vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients.

Doing a little homework beforehand will ensure that your juice has the right nutrient combo: antioxidants, fiber,

lean protein, and polyunsaturated fats. And, of course, Chamber members are welcome to reach out to Marta for a professional nutrition consultation.

As you may have heard, juicing is the “hot” new health trend— one with its own advantages and disadvantages. MDGLCC Chamber member Marta Montenegro, an IVFMD Nutrition Specialist and Fertility Lifestyles Consultant, offers her professional point-of-view on this diet craze.

Spotlight Interview

TRE VOR BuRGESSPRESIDENT / CEO, C1 BANK

C1 BANKWWW.C1BANK.COMMDGLCC COrPOrATe PArTner

Please share with us a bit of your personal background.

I grew up in small town New Hampshire – super precocious – my mother always said I was born to be in my 40’s. After Dartmouth I went on to be a management consultant and then an investment banker before catching the entrepreneurial bug in early 2008.

My husband, Gary and I just celebrated our 20th anniversary and we are having a blast raising our six year old, highly spirited, little girl.

C1 Bank is in the process of merging with Bank of the Ozarks. Tell us a bit about the process and how you see the two cultures fitting together?

We are winding our way thought the regulatory approval process for the merger of C1 Bank with Bank of the Ozarks hoping to get the deal closed early in the third quarter of 2016. Bank of the Ozark’s CEO is also an entrepreneur having bought the bank while he was still in his 20’s. Both of our firms are committed to serving clients in a first class way – and that’s why I know our merger will be a success.

C1 has a history of support for the LGBT Market. As an openly gay man, do you see that support being maintained within the new organization?

I was the first openly gay CEO of a publicly traded bank in the u.S. and am one of only three openly gay public company CEOs. Any organization that I’m a part of is going to be comfortable with having me as a leader and be comfortable with my advocacy for equality.

As a Florida based bank, what are some of the institutions goals/strategies that make it unique in the market?

Florida is one of the fastest growing states in the country — and that’s why we have been able to lend over $2 billion since I took control of the bank in December of 2009. We have to move fast and hire the very best people to meet the needs of this dynamic state.

As a Corporate Partner Member of MDGLC, what makes the Chamber worthy of your support?

C1 Bank wants to make very clear to the LGBT community that we are excited to have their business — and that we are excited to be part of the community. Working with the MDGLC allows us to get that message across.

LuCky fOr us, There Are MAny wOnDerfuL PLACes TO enjOy A suMMer niGhT in MiAMi, and two of those places are part of the Autograph Collection South Beach: the Winter Haven Hotel, just steps from Ocean Drive, and the Blue Moon Hotel, a historic building located on Collins Avenue.

Autograph Collection hotels offer the rich experience of a boutique hotel with the benefits of Marriott Rewards, so you can earn points for free nights and flights around the globe.

The Winter Haven and Blue Moon, both MDGLCC hospitality member hotels, are located in the historic Miami Beach Art Deco District, where summer is best celebrated in style.

Stop in at the Winter Haven or the Blue Moon and meet Chamber member Selenne “Selly” Bordewijk, Area Director of Sales for the Autograph Collection. Once the National Sales Manager at Nobu Eden Roc Miami Beach, Selly is currently offering a summertime promotion called the LGBT unity package. Every night you book under the LGBT unity package includes a split donation to both the LGBT Visitor’s Center and the unity Coalition. So you can stay in a beautiful hotel in the heart of South Beach and, at the same time, support our

local community efforts. After all, Miami Beach has for many years been one of the world’s top LGBT vacation destinations—and now it’s the perfect spot for LBGT weddings and honeymoons, too.

Juan is Vice President and Private Financial Advisor at SunTrust Investment Services, an organization driven by purpose and a personal touch. One of the largest financial services institutions in the nation, SunTrust offers a full suite of products and services designed to meet the needs of their clients and help people achieve financial confidence. So SunTrust’s mantra comes as no surprise: How can we help you shine today?

Do I want to adopt? Now that I can legally marry, should I look into joint finances? How do I invest with confidence at this point in my professional career? These are just a few of the questions that Juan has to address as a private financial advisor. He takes SunTrust’s mantra to heart, building relationships with

his clients and listening to their specific questions and concerns so that he can point them in the best direction. But there is one piece of advice that applies to all of his clients: PLAnninG is PArAMOunT.

You’re likely to run into Juan at an upcoming Chamber event; speaking about recent get-togethers, Juan was genuinely inspired by the Lunch & Learn on the topic of adoption and raved about the Amethyst Gala held this past May. “It was fantastic this year,” Juan says of the Gala. “Such a wonderful opportunity to meet other professionals as well as connect with old friends and business associates.” Juan is enthusiastic about the benefits of Chamber membership and encourages fellow members to take full advantage. “The more you put into the Chamber, the more you get out,” he advises. “The MDGLCC is remarkably

engaged with its community.”

For new MDGLCC Chamber member Juan Bernal, summertime simply means more quality time on his boat. Boating has always been a passion for Juan, who keeps an 18-foot Dolphin at his home in Key West. Cruising on his flat-bottom boat in the shallow waters of the Keys is a well-deserved escape from the hustle and bustle of Miami.

Looking for Professional or Event Space?

You can rent space for events, meetings, etc. at the LGBT Visitor Center (home of the Chamber’s office).

As a community chamber (versus a civic chamber), we encourage both our gay and gay-friendly family to support those who support us. One of the benefits of membership in MDGLCC is the knowledge that a $8 billion local LGBT market searches our roster of members first when making purchase decisions about goods and services. With a list of over 600 companies comprising our membership, more likely than not you will find what you are looking for.

As corporate America looks to diversify its revenue stream, the LGBT market is increasingly being looked to for growth. The best way we can make the greatest impact is to speak with our pocketbooks and use Chamber Members whenever possible.
