2019-20 COMMUNITY NOTES

FAMILY FESTIVAL: The 23rd annual Miami HEAT Family Festival, presented by the Carnival Foundation, is the Charitable Fund’s largest annual fundraiser. The themed, interactive, carnival-like celebration will take place on Saturday, March 21 at the Mana Wynwood Convention Center in which HEAT players, coaches, celebrities and families will come together for a day of fun, family and feasting. This year’s “Vice Wave” theme fundraiser will be an entertainment extravaganza for the whole family with live music, activities and food representing over 50 of South Florida’s finest restaurants and a silent auction.

PLAYER TICKET PROGRAM: One of the most generous and trend-setting programs in the NBA, the Miami HEAT’s Community Player Ticket Outreach Program will spend the entire 2019-20 regular season reaching out to children and youth less fortunate who typically would only dream of watching a HEAT game live. HEAT players Goran Dragić, Udonis Haslem, Derrick Jones, Jr. and Meyers Leonard, along with Head Coach Erik Spoelstra, will join forces to donate tickets for every single home game to local charitable organizations that would otherwise not have the means to attend HEAT games. Each player, based upon availability, graciously provides several private “Meet & Greet” opportunities for the groups prior to each HEAT home game, where the players give inspiring talks to the children, sign autographs and take pictures with the group. The participating organizations also attend a private viewing of the team warm-ups. Over the course of the season, the children, many for the first time, will have the opportunity to enjoy a HEAT game, courtesy of their favorite HEAT players and role models.

2019-20 HEAD COACH

ERIK SPOELSTRA (Portland)

Regular Season Coaching Record: 559-384, currently in 12th Season

Erik Spoelstra enters his 12th season as head coach of the HEAT and his 25th as a member of the organization. He was elevated to his current position on April 28, 2008. Spoelstra has rewarded the faith that HEAT President Pat Riley showed in him by garnering eight postseason appearances, six division titles, four conference championships and guiding the franchise to back-to-back NBA titles in 2012 and 2013. In his previous 11 seasons at the helm, Spoelstra has already made his mark on the HEAT record book. Entering this season, he holds the franchise record in wins, winning percentage and games coached. In postseason play, he owns the franchise records in victories (71), winning percentage (.602), series won (15) and postseason games coached (118). Additionally, he has been named the NBA’s Eastern Conference Coach of the Month a franchise-record eight times. When Spoelstra first took over the head coaching duties in 2008 he was given the task of improving a young team that had been ravaged by injuries the previous season and had won just 15 games. Two years later, after the summer of 2010 in which Miami re-signed Dwyane Wade and acquired All-Stars LeBron James and Chris Bosh, he found himself coaching a highly-talented, veteran group that was the most scrutinized team in the NBA. Spoelstra and his team have proven they were up for the challenge as he guided them to consecutive NBA Championships, four-straight Conference Championships and four consecutive NBA Finals appearances, becoming just the third franchise in NBA history to make four consecutive NBA Finals appearances, joining the Celtics and Lakers. It also made them just one of 10 franchises in the four major North American sports leagues to make four consecutive trips to the league championship. Individually, Spoelstra became just the fourth head coach in NBA history to lead his team to four-straight Finals appearances joining Red Auerbach, K.C. Jones and Pat Riley. Spoelstra joined a very elite fraternity when he led the HEAT to a seven-game series win over the San Antonio Spurs in the 2013 NBA Finals. Upon capturing the 2013 NBA Championship he became one of just 13 head coaches in NBA history to have won multiple championships and only the eighth to win a championship in consecutive seasons. The 2012 championship culminated a compressed 2011-12 season in which Miami went 46-20 and captured its second consecutive Southeast Division title. The regular season was highlighted by a nine-game win streak (Feb. 10-Mar. 1) with each victory a double-digit win. During that streak the HEAT became the first team to win road games on three consecutive nights (Feb. 12-14) since December of 1979 and the first to win each of those contests by double-digits since the 1970-71 season. Before taking over as the sixth head coach in HEAT history, Spoelstra had served Miami in a number of roles in his first 13 years. He was originally hired as video coordinator and over the years was promoted to assistant coach/video coordinator, assistant coach/advance scout and assistant coach/director of scouting, a title he held during Miami’s 2006 NBA Championship, before ascending to head coach. He made a name for himself around the league with his game preparation and superb attention to detail. In his seven seasons as the HEAT’s assistant coach/director of scouting, he had the primary role of developing game plans for upcoming opponents. To that end, he coordinated the video staff and advance scouts while overseeing the development of scouting reports and videos. In 1992, he graduated from the University of Portland with a degree in communications. While attending Portland, Spoelstra was the starting point guard for four years and was named the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year in 1989. Upon graduating he spent two years as a player/coach for Tus Herten, a team in the professional sports league of Germany. He has returned to his native Philippines to host clinics and promote education, health and wellness to thousands of at-risk youth through grassroots programs and events. The 9-day program in Manila in the summer of 2011 was the largest NBA FIT event ever hosted in Southeast Asia under the NBA Cares umbrella. In the summer of 2012, Coach Spoelstra expanded his reach into other Southeast Asia nations by conducting coaches clinics and other FIT activities in Singapore. Raised in Portland, OR, Spoelstra, who was inducted into the Jesuit High School Athletic Hall of Fame in September 2009, is the first Asian/Filipino-American head coach in any of the major North American sports leagues. Spoelstra is the son of Jon Spoelstra, a long-time NBA executive who has guided the Portland Trail Blazers, Denver Nuggets, Buffalo Braves and New Jersey Nets. His grandfather, Watson, was a Detroit Tigers beat writer for many years. He and his wife, Nikki, who were married in the summer of 2016, reside in Coral Gables, with their sons Santiago and Dante.
