While picking through a Rio de Janeiro trash dump looking for the small treasures that will earn him a dollar or two to get through the day, young orphan Raphael discovers a once-in-a-lifetime bonanza: a wallet stu ed not just with cash, but some highly cryptic notes and symbols. When a major unit of the police force descends upon his favela in search of the wallet, Raphael knows he's chanced upon something big, and with the help of his buddies Gardo and Rato, launches an adventure to unearth the secret that the powerful elite wishes to crush.

Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot) excels at creating fully-rounded child heroes with pride and determination to follow their hearts. Working with screenwriter Richard Curtis (Love Actually), Daldry handles the transition to working in Portuguese effortlessly, deftly inspiring our identification with his young leads, while shining a spotlight on the sobering challenges facing one of the world's most closely-watched cities. The supporting cast includes American stars Martin Sheen and Rooney Mara as missionary church workers trying to protect the boys from a brutally dead-end existence, and Brazilian stars Wagner Moura and Selton Mello. - Jaie Laplante

An international rescue e ort to save 33 Chilean miners trapped 2,300 ft underground for 69 days in the Copiapó mine riveted over a billion people in 2010, and now a superb international fi lm adaptation recreates the details of that unprecedented event. Despite what you think you may remember about that extraordinary story, Patricia Riggen’s thrilling fi lm version re-enacts those events as a heart-pounding thriller, while humanizing the subjects behind the media sensation with the trembling emotion of the very human drive to live, and heal.

With economic set-up and a truly scary recreation of the epic accident, Riggen plunges us deep into the heart of the mountain. An extraordinary cast of international stars brings their real-life counterparts a super immediacy. Below ground, there is “Super-Mario” Sepúlveda (a passionate Antonio Banderas), the charismatic but controversial spokesperson for the miners; above ground, standouts include Juliette Binoche as the broken-hearted sister of one of the miners and Rodrigo Santoro as Laurence Golborne, the Chilean government’s Minister of Public Works.

The real story of the 33 could have gone in so many di erent directions, and there were heroes both likely and unlikely whose contributions made up the greater triumph. Riggen’s fi lm does the near-impossible; it gives life to the fear and dread, and the triumph, as if it were happening completely anew. - Jaie Laplante

Home is where the heart is, but when your loyalties lie in two di erent places, worlds apart, choosing where to create your life is not an easy task. In 1952, with her family’s economic position in Ireland precarious, Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan, an Oscar nominee for Atonement) is shipped o to New York City to work and send money back home. Although watched over by a kindly expat priest (Jim Broadbent) and her caustic landlady (Julie Walters), Eilis fi nds Brooklyn a scary, overwhelming and lonely place - until she meets Tony (Emory Cohen), a young Italian-American plumber who woos her relentlessly.

When a tragedy forces Eilis’ return to Ireland, her initial euphoria at being in the land she knows and understands best turns complicated when she becomes unexpectedly involved with a young rugby player, Jim (Domhnall Gleason). Faced with having to choose between two men, Eilis also has to choose between tradition and passion, between two countries and two futures. Brilliantly acted and sensitively adapted by Nick Hornby (An Education) from the Colm Tóibín bestselling novel. - Jaie Laplante

THE ASSASSIN(NIE YIN NIANG)TAIWAN, CHINA, HONG KONG, FRANCE | 2015 | 105 min. | Mandarin with English subtitles

In 9th century China, 10-year-old Nie Yinniang is abducted by a nun who transforms her into an impressive warrior. One day, she is sent back to her home province with orders to kill the ruling lord, whom she was expected to marry. Nie Yinniang must choose: assassinate the man she loves or betray the sacred honor of her training.

After a distinguished career of social-realist dramas, the great Taiwanese fi lmmaker Hou Hsiao-Hsien keeps his feet - and camera - on the ground for his fi rst incursion into the martial combat genre. Realistic action sequences replace the swirling sword choreographies and slow-motion special e ect pirouettes typical of the form. What matters most in The Assassin, as in Akira Kurosawa’s classic samurai fi lms, is the particular human philosophy and moral codes behind the strange business of being a righteous assassin. What also matters is the force of Hou’s wonderfully crafted cinematography and art direction, which deliver scene after scene of ravishing beauty. Every frame is a painting. - Orlando Rojas

The notorious Puccio case that stunned Argentina 30 years ago has lost none of its power to shock, outrage and chill. A member of the secret police of the Videla military regime of the late 70s and early 80s, it was Arquimedes Puccio’s job to kidnap dissidents during the reign of terror where more than 30,000 citizens simply “disappeared”. But after the fall of the regime, the upper middle-class Puccio kept right on going, kidnapping his rich neighbors and demanding huge ransoms – and then killing the victims even after the ransoms were paid.

Director Pablo Trapero tackles the juicy tale with adriving, muscular gusto, delving into Puccio's fascinating infl uence over his family and associates. Especially a ected was Puccio's eldest son, Alex, a promising and popular young rugby star, but was lost in the grip of his father's psychological control over the "family business". As entertaining as it is disturbing, The Clan exposes our insatiable fascination for impunity. - Jaie Laplante

In the Colombian Amazon in 1909, the Dutch botanist Theodor von Martins encounters the deeply mistrustful young shaman Karamakate, who has been separated by European imperialists from his recently decimated tribe. Deathly ill, von Martins must convince Karamakateto help him find the mystical healing plant yakuna, which he does by promising to lead Karamakate to a reunion with his elders. In a parallel story 40 years later, Karamakate is now an old man, but still serving as a guide, this time guiding an American explorer through the same waterways and snake-infested jungle floors. As the world moves forward, what ancient wisdoms are lost, what lessons of nature long understood become forgotten?

This is an epic and thrilling journey, capped with velvety, rich black & white cinematography, winner of the top award at this year's Directors' Fortnight in Cannes. THE CLUB(EL CLUB)CHILE | 2015 | 98 min. | Spanish with English subtitles

Chilean director Pablo Larraín’s follow-up to his global success (and Oscar-nominated) No, starring Gael García Bernal, is a tough, scathing and psychologically sobering indictment on the Catholic Church’s handling of moral failings within the institution.

In a dull, nondescript oceanside house in a town far removed from the national consciousness, four Catholic priests and a former nun live in exile and relative solitude. The “club,” one of many dotted throughout Chile, is the Archdiocese’s internal version of justice: total banishment for those who have made sexual or other abusive transgressions. When a new arrival creates a shocking incident that threatens the anonymity of the Church’s solution, a highly-placed administrative o»cial from the Archdiocese comes to audit the club, and harshly questions the general lack of atonement he sees. Yet when outside forces start to muster threats of violence, the Church responds in the only way it seems to know how. - Jaie Laplante

IT’S NOW OR NEVER(AHORA O NUNCA)SPAIN | 2015 | 91 min. | Spanish with English subtitles

Fiancés Álex (Dani Rovira) and Eva (Maria Valverde) met as foreign exchange students in London, England years earlier, and to cap their romantic fairytale they have planned to bring friends and family together for the wedding in the same destination. In classic romantic comedy fashion, their love will be tested in numerous daunting ways before they can exchange their vows of commitment, among them a nightmarish Spanish mother-in-law-to-be, airport strikes, volcanic ash, blackout bachelorette parties and a variety of lost-in-translation double-entendres.

The chemistry of Rovira (the star of Spanish Aair (Ocho apellidos vascos) and the luminous Goya winner María Valverde helped propel It’s Now or Never to be this summer's biggest homegrown box o»ce hit in Spain. The result is a frothy, frisky comedy of first-class creative skill, expertly timed and filled with joyous performances, from the leads to the delightful character actors found in even the smallest roles. - Jaie Laplante

HAVANA MOTOR CLUBUSA/CUBA | 2015 | 80 min. | Spanish with English subtitles

One of the most fascinating events of Miami International Film Festival in 2014 was filmmaker Bent-Jorgen Perlmutt’s special presentation on his creative process in constructinghis portrait of Cuba’s top underground drag racers of classic American cars (and he galvanized the lucky audience members with some key sequences from the film). A year later, the film is now complete, and we’re delighted to bring Perlmutt back to Miami to share the finished work.

Havana Motor Club has it all: drama, heartbreak, frustration, laughter and tears, as Perlmutt follows many characters that tell stories about a Cuban much larger than themselves. From the moment that Castro banned the o»cial sport following a tragic accident in the early 1960s to present day, the underground racers have pursued a quest to have its o»cial status reinstated, and to bring their hobby out from the shadows. Exciting racing sequences and revealing quieter moments with some of the racers punctuate the story, which races through the gamut of emotional highs and lows. - Jaie Laplante

MIA MADREITALY, FRANCE | 2015 | 106 min. | Italian, English with English subtitles

Well-regarded Italian filmmaker Margherita (the always brilliant Margherita Buy), is directing a big-budget film on location in Rome starring famous American actorBarry Huggins (played by John Turturro in another wholly original performance). But the actor’s bizarre behavior on the set causes major headaches and soon threatens a production meltdown. Margherita struggles to hold the film together, while away from the shoot, she is dealing with her mother’s terminal illness and her daughter’s adolescent rebelliousness.

Nanni Moretti’s Mia Madre is possibly his most personal film, and a master class on autobiographical cinema. Although Moretti appears in a supporting role as Margherita’s brother, the character of Margherita herself is Moretti’s alter-ego. As in Moretti’s masterpieceThe Son’s Room, every conflict revolves around his own fears, uncertainties and despairs, as if he’d incessantly asked himself whether he’d be able to match the commitment he brings to his professional life, with his family duties.

Moretti’s legendary skill at creating powerful universal drama out of our most individual insecurities makes Mia Madre a rare gift. – Orlando Rojas

KRISHAUSA | 2015 | 83 min.

Estranged from her family for many years, the 60-something Krisha arrives at her younger sister Robyn’s house for a carefully planned reconciliation over the Thanksgiving holiday, where her mother, other siblings, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and grand-niece have all congregated for a fun-filled weekend. Yet the edgy tension surrounding Krisha’s visit builds steadily, particularly with one of the young men we at first assume to be her nephew…Trey (played by the writer-director-editor-producer of the film, Trey Edward Shults). As the holiday progresses, Krisha’s intentions and psyche reveal a deep streak of self-destructive tendencies that cause havoc with the family dynamic. Winner of both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at SXSW earlier this year, Shults’ highly personal and compelling, hypnotic drama was also selected for Critic's Week in Cannes. Shults has drawn comparisons to the work of legendary American independent director John Cassavetes for their mutual use of family members in the cast and a maverick, avant-garde style of shooting favoring characters and scenes that envelop the viewer in both observation and emotion. - Andres Castillo

PRESENTED BY:

After years abroad, anthropologist Paul Dedalus returns to France to find an explosive emotional time bomb awaiting him. Memories of key moments in Paul's life that in retrospect have come to define him at a fundamental level, come flooding back to him...his mother's suicide when he was 11; a rash teenage choice in Russia where he gave away his passport to a Jewish boy to save him from persecution; and most of all, his mad college-days love aair with Esther, a beautiful young woman with an intimidating degree of self-confidence. Yet over time Esther’s independent streak devolves into frailty, and as both Paul and Esther spend time with other lovers, their almost perfectly poetic connection becomes a daily struggle.

A major prize winner at the Director's Fortnight in Cannes, Arnaud Desplechin’s epic coming-of-age tale portrays first love as a candid, sensual and unique experience that leaves a mark lasting as long as life itself. - Andres Castillo

Mambru (Benicio Del Toro) and B (Tim Robbins) work for the nonprofit and neutral Aid Without Borders to keep the peace amid the terrible ethnic tensions in the Balkan region in the 1990s. With the fighting winding down and peace on the horizon, they will soon be heading home, but not before attempting to make one last dierence. As a parting shot, a corpse has been dropped in a local well, contaminating the villagers' water supply, and Mambru and B set about dredging up the body and cleaning the water. An easy enough task - except that every conceivable roadblock (even bovine!) seems to conspire to against them, along with their colleagues Sophie and Katya.

Spanish director Fernando León de Aranoa makes his first English language film with this Director's Fortnight-debuting tale, and his trademark humor, humanism and deeply satisfying compassion remain in tact for one of his richest works to date. A Perfect Day is a tender portrait of men who live to help, but who are gradually realizing their gru benevolence has reached a certain level of saturation. The men hold on to their boyish charms even as they age with graceful wisdom. – Jaie Laplante

Like a "living thunderbolt", the bold and nonconformist Yona Wallach stormed through Tel-Aviv's male-dominated political and poetry circles in the 1960s.

As played in a fearless performance by Naomi Levov, Yona struggled from the beginning to be recognized for her no-holds-barred, free-form style of poetry featuring explicit tales of sexuality. Her poetry matched her life, a turbulent and fiercely high-pitched nightmare of intensity that led to a breakdown and time in a mental institution. Refusing to compromise even after release, Yona’s work eventually became recognized in the most prominent literary books and magazines of her time, and she was honored with the Israeli Prime Minister’s Literary Award in 1978.

Director Nir Bergman’s biopic vividly captures Yona’s highs, lows and her brave rebellion against a chauvinistic society with her unique voice. The film is fascinated by the formation of a legend, taken from us too soon. - Andres Castillo

Lifetime friends and in-laws Fred Ballinger (Michael Caine), a retired orchestra conductor, and film director Mick Boyle (Harvey Keitel), meet at one of their favorite retreats - an elegant Swiss spa. Mick is focusing on his next film, which he intends as his magnum opus, while Fred fends o an oer from Queen Elizabeth II to accept knighthood. Crisis interrupts in two forms - Mick's son Julian, married to Fred's daughter Lena (Rachel Weisz), abruptly leaves Lena for a young pop starlet; and a prickly Hollywood diva (Jane Fonda) arrives to give Mick a brutally unsparing piece of her mind.

In Paolo Sorrentino's newest Fellini-tinged masterpiece, the follow-up to his 2014 Oscar winning The Great Beauty, the Italian auteur orchestrates grand themes around life's wisdom - the getting of it, the delusion of it. Youth isn't wasted on the young, but Youth shows us that the pain of it is something we never really leave behind. - Jaie Laplante

Having composed the music for more than 130 productions, including dozens of the most memorable and successful films of the past three decades, James Horner was among the world’s most prolifi c and beloved fi lm composers. Tragically, Horner died this past June, when his single-engine crashed in a remote area of northern California. One of his final scores is Patricia Riggen's The 33, our GEMS closing night film.  Horner’s work in The 33 is a large part of the movie’s incredible accomplishments – his music works expertly to stir our emotions and grip us deeper into the characters’ drama without ever being obtrusive. Horner, a two-time Academy Award winner, has left a legacy of some of the most influential and acclaimed music in the history of cinema.

On the eve of the premiere of The 33, Miami-based feature film composer Carlos Rafael Rivera takes an in-depth look at Horner’s work and career, using cues to demonstrate the powerful, yet often subtle, creative influence Horner brought to specific scenes and entire films. Beginning with one of Horner’s breakthrough accomplishments, the revered  Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982), and continuing on through multiple films (including Glory and Titanic), Rivera provides a compelling insight into the creative contributions of the film composer, and the special connection between composer and director.
