PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (71-86) RHP Kyle Kendrick (9-13, 4.73) vs. MIAMI MARLINS (75-81) LHP Brad Hand (3-8, 4.59) MARLINS PARK, MIAMI, FL Wednesday, September 24, 2014 – 7:10 P.M. FISH BITES Miami continues its final homestand of 2014 with the second game of this three-game set against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Marlins were swept in a four-game set against the Washington Nationals to open the ‘stand after return- ing home from a 10-game road trip to Milwaukee (2-2), Philadelphia (1-2) and New York (2-1). Brad Hand, who is looking for his first win against the Phils as a starter, has posted a 1-2 record and 4.13 ERA (24.0 IP/11 ER) in six career appearances (four starts) against them. Philadelphia is countering with Kyle Kendrick, who in 25 career appear- ances (20 starts) against the Fish has a 13-3 record with one complete game and a 3.57 ERA (126.0/50); he is 1-1, 3.96 ERA in four 2014 outings. The Fish will wrap up the 2014 campaign this weekend when they travel to D.C. to face the Nats in a four-game, season-ending series. Tonight’s ceremonial first pitch is being thrown out by Jenny Carricarte Penton, and the National Anthem is being performed by Michaela Paige. ABOUT LAST NIGHT The Marlins snapped a four-game losing skid with a 2-0 win over the visiting Philadelphia Phillies. Ed Lucas opened the scoring with an RBI single in the fourth inning to plate Jeff Baker, and in the fifth, a Casey McGehee sac fly drove in Christian Yelich to put Miami up 2-0. Yelich and Lucas provided two hits each, while Baker, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Adeiny Hechavarria all added one hit each. Henderson Alvarez (12-6) worked an efficient game, allowing five hits with one walk and two strikeouts over 7.2 innings. Steve Cishek tossed a scoreless ninth for his 38 th save. VS. THE PHILLIES Miami and Philadelphia play the second-to-last game of their 2014 season series tonight. The Marlins trail the series, 8-9, but own the lead in Miami with a mark of 5-2. The Fish lead the all-time series in South Florida with a record of 92-85, including a 14-11 record at Marlins Park, but trail the overall series, 160-197. ELIAS SAYS... Henderson Alvarez threw 7.2 scoreless innings against the Phillies last night, earning his 12 th win of the season, a 2-0 decision at Miami. Alvarez lowered his 2014 home ERA to an impressive 1.60 (90.0/16). That is by-far the best home mark in the Majors this year, exceeding even Cy Young front-runners like Clayton Kershaw (1.75), Johnny Cueto (1.75) and Felix Hernandez (2.16). Alvarez is continuing an impressive trend for Marlins’ starting pitchers, as since 1998, when the Majors expanded to their current total of 30 teams, only four big-league pitchers have finished a season with a home ERA of 1.60 or lower: Kershaw (1.54) last year, and three Marlins - Alvarez, Jose Fernandez (1.19 last year) and Josh Johnson (1.57 in 2010). BLANK LOOKS The Marlins recorded their 16 th shutout of the season last night, three more than last season and their most since a club-record 17 shutouts in 2010. The 16 shutouts are the second-most in a single season in Franchise history, followed by 15 in 2005, and are tied with the Dodgers and Nationals for second-most in the National League behind St. Louis (22). Miami has shut out Atlanta four times this season, tied for the most shutouts of one opponent in the Majors, join- ing the Cubs (vs. Milwaukee), St. Louis (vs. Pittsburgh) and Texas (vs. Seattle). - STATS LLC BASEBALL’S BRIGHTEST UNDER 23 At 22, Christian Yelich is putting up serious numbers. He leads all Major League players under 23 years of age in runs (91), hits (162) and stolen bases (21). He ranks second in doubles (29) and RBI (54) to Nick Castellanos of Detroit, who has 31 and 62, respectively. In addition, he leads all Major League left fielders in fielding percentage at .996 (259 TC/1 E). - STATS LLC THE BOUR IDENTITY Justin Bour made his Major League debut with Miami on June 5 after being selected in the Triple-A phase of last winter’s Rule 5 draft out of the Cubs’ system. In his ML debut, Bour went 2x5 with one RBI against the Rays in Tampa. In his nine starts for the Fish this year, which includes three starts as a designated hitter, Bour is hitting .400 (14x35) with a double, one home run and five RBI. BETTER LATE THAN NEVER The Marlins lead the National League and are fourth in MLB with 235 runs in the seventh inning or later. Minnesota leads baseball with 254, followed by Toronto with 240 and Detroit with 236. When looking specifically at innings 7-9, the Marlins own the highest run differential in the Majors at +56 (219 RS-163 RA). Oakland ranks second at +46 (202- 156), followed by Washington (+38; 192-154) and Minnesota (+37; 240-203). - STATS LLC HITS WHEN NEEDED Over the last month, Miami’s offense with runners in scoring position is the third-best in the National League, and fourth-best in the Majors. The Fish have posted a .298 (72x242) average with RISP since August 21, behind the Dodg- ers (.337), San Francisco (.320) and Detroit (.307). Miami has gone hitless with runners in scoring position just three times in the 30-game stretch. Miami had three hitless games with RISP in the first 17 August contests alone prior to the 21 st . RIGHTING THE SHIP Miami, which enters tonight’s game with 75 wins on the year, went 62-100 last season, marking just its second 100-loss campaign in Franchise history (108 in 1998). Since the leagues split into two divisions in 1969, 24 National League teams have lost 100+ games in a season. The Fish are one of only four to win 75-or-more games in the following season, currently tied with the 1977 Montreal Expos. The San Francisco Giants won 83 in 1986 and Arizona notched 77 in 2005. TABLE SETTER Since August 11, Christian Yelich has hit opposing pitchers to the tune of a .348 average (56x161). Since that date, he is tied with Buster Posey for the National League lead in hits, and ranks third in the NL in average behind Posey (.381) and Starling Marte (.362). Since June 7, when he began the day with a season-low .240 average, Yelich has hit .326 (106x325) to raise his season mark to its current .290; it is the third-highest mark in the NL over that span, behind Justin Morneau (.345) and Posey (.329). • Hand is making his fourth straight turn in the rotation tonight, and his fifth straight appearance (fourth start) vs. a division opponent. In seven of 10 starts since the All-Star break, has pitched 6.0-or-more innings while allowing three-or-fewer runs, posting a 4.18 ERA (64.2 IP/30 ER) in 12 appearances overall. Recorded a 5.26 ERA (39.1/23) in 19 games (five starts) before the All-Star break.

• Has walked one batter in four appearances (three starts) this month. Among Major League pitchers with at least 20.0 IP in September, Hand’s 0.45 BB/9 ranks fifth (second in NL).

• According to FanGraphs, 65.1 percent of his pitches are fastballs. That is the 15th-highest fastball usage rate among NL pitchers (min. 100.0 IP).

• Has not allowed a home run in his last three starts (17.0 IP), after giving up six home runs in his previous three starts (16.0 IP). Held opponents homerless during a seven-start stretch (43.0 IP) from July 3 to August 5.

• His ERA in July ranked tied for 17th among NL starters (min. 5 GS). It was only the second month of his career in which he made four or more starts, and the second-best ERA he has posted in a month in which he made multiple starts (1.93 in three starts in July 2011).

• Has tossed at least 7.0 innings in four of his last 10 starts, including three of his last five at home. Prior to that, had not reached that mark since July 7, 2011 vs. Houston, in his fifth career start, a span of 34 appearances (15 starts).

• Opponents are batting .256 (75x293) against him in 13 starts since July 3 with a .372 slugging percentage; in his first 16 appearances of the season (two starts), they were hitting .287 (27x94) and slugging .543. Also, he is averaging 2.25 bb/9 in 15 appearances since July 3; was averaging 6.00 bb/9 prior to that.

• Is holding LHH to a .239 average against, 14th-best among Major League quali-fying LHP.

• On July 3 vs. Philadelphia, struck out five batters, one short of tying a career high he set in his Major League debut on June 7, 2011 vs. Atlanta.

• Started Miami’s final game of the first half, on July 13 at the Mets, but left after just 4.0 innings due to a right shin contusion suffered when he was struck by a line drive.

• Has also made 16 appearances out of the bullpen this season. Has not factored in a decision in relief, but has one save (one SVO) and a 4.57 ERA (21.2/11). The 3.0-inning save came on April 4 vs. San Diego, and was the first of his career, and was team’s first save of 3.0 innings or more since 4/22/07, by Kevin Gregg vs. WSH (3.0 ip), and just 10th in Franchise history.

• Was placed on DL on May 24 and sent on rehab assignment on June 4. Made six rehab starts between Single-A Jupiter and Triple-A New Orleans, going 2-0 with 2.38 ERA (34.0/9), 36 strikeouts and a .190 average against (22x116).

• For the season, he is 3-8, 4.59 (82.1/42) in 15 starts, and 0-0, 4.57 (21.2/11) with one save in 16 relief appearances. Now has a 4-18 career record in 30 starts, with a 4.73 ERA (158.0/83). In 21 relief appearances, is 1-0 with one save and a 3.56 ERA (30.1/12).
