ANNUAL REPORT2012-2013

Bringing the World to Minnesota and Minnesota to the World

“Trust is the highest form of human motivation. It brings out the very best in people.”

ahead, the need for international engagement has never

been greater. MIC is not a luxury; awareness of our global

role is a necessity. We bring Minnesota to the world and

the world to Minnesota, things we have been doing for 60

years.

In 2012-13 we spent significant time setting MIC’s future

direction and vision, so that we could honor our 60 year

legacy and plan for the next 60 years. We moved from our

house on the University of Minnesota’s campus for the

first time in over 50 year to a wonderful new location on

the University’s East Bank campus. We retooled our K-12

program, aligning it with the state’s education standards

and focusing on the grades where global studies are a key

part of the curriculum. We worked in partnership with

national organizations, such as the Foreign Policy Asso-

ciation, Global Ties U.S., and the World Affairs Council of

America.

Our founders’ vision of an organization that brought peo-

ple together and called for open dialogue is the legacy

that we carry on today. MIC contributes to democracy by

creating citizen diplomats who can educate others, do

business and travel around the world while representing

the best of Minnesota. We build trust around the world,

one person at a time. Join us.

This year marks MIC’s 60th anniversary. Our world has seen unprecedented change and MIC’s work to promote international understanding and engagement is as im-portant now as it was at our founding. Our 2013-15 board chair, Leni Moore, notes, “...issues around the world that we hear about every day have global and local ramifica-tions. Only by being educated about these issues and by reaching out to our international neighbors and visitors can we make Minnesota become part of the global com-munity and the world economy.”

Josef Mestenhauser, Bill Rogers, and Forrest Moore founded the Minnesota International Center in 1953 to create a University-community partnership that engaged ‘Citizen Diplomats’ to connect Minnesotans with visiting students and scholars. They believed that diplomacy was no longer the exclusive business of the State Department, we needed to create connections to the outside world, and it could be best done by citizens who saw this as part of their civic duty.

As MIC enters its seventh decade our core principle remains the same: we build trust and understanding between people. We have grown to an organization with a national and international stature, where our influence allows us to bring pressing issues to the national dis-course. Our programs reach from the young student to the retiree; we engage international scholars, corporate professionals, seasoned diplomats and volunteers. MIC is unparalleled in its ability to deliver programs that allow Minnesotans to connect and participate in the interna-tional sphere, and for Minnesota to extend its influence around the globe through MIC’s activities.

Minnesota, isolated by distance from so many of the world’s countries, is required to actively seek out global connections. We need them for business, education, the arts and public policy and, given the choices that lie

Community Programs

The quality of the Minnesota International Center’s (MIC) programs continued at a high level in 2012-13. The World Affairs public program series saw world-class speakers inform and engage large, diverse audiences. Our Global Education Program in the schools was retooled to offer Minnesota educators quality curriculum in line with new state standards. Community Programs continued their mission of bringing a personal side to the global issues of our time. And the International Visitor Leadership Program strengthened its position as one of the largest destinations in the State Department’s host network.

The 2013 Academic WorldQuest, held at General Mills headquarters, was an opportunity for students to raise their global IQ in interactive ways that promote college readiness. The event saw 17 teams and nearly 70 high school students compete. The winners, from St. Paul Central High School, went to Washington D.C., where they represented Minnesota in the national competition sponsored by our parent organization, World Affairs Councils of America (WACA).

2013 also presented one-of-a-kind professional development opportunities for area educators. The Great Decisions Teacher Training Institute in New York provided an opportunity for educators to work with the best that the Foreign Policy Association has to offer in exploring new ways of teaching global curriculum to students. The Spotlight on Turkey teachers’ study trip gave educators a truly immersive experience in Turkish culture which was then brought back to Minnesota through new curriculum as well as “Meet the Teachers” events.

MIC’s Great Decisions in the Schools foreign policy discussion groups program was piloted in area high schools as a way for students to have increased access to objective, in-depth, contextual information about global issues. Great Decisions is America’s largest discussion program on foreign policy topics. The name is shared by the national civic-education program, briefing book

The quality of the Minnesota International Center’s (MIC) programs continued at a high level in 2012-13.

MIC’s World Affairs public programs, the public face of the organization, feature some of the world’s best thinkers in global affairs connecting with corporate and community audiences who simply would not otherwise have access to the high-caliber, very experienced speakers offered. In 2012-13, some highlighted events included Canadian Ambassador Gary Doer’s public presentation focusing on the U.S.-Canadian partnership and Minnesota’s role as a border state, a collaborative forum with the Korean Economic Institute on the future of commercial ties between the U.S. and South Korea, and our “Understanding Muslim Societies” presentation and dialogue.

MIC’s Global Education Program, which includes Classroom Connection, Academic WorldQuest and Great Decisions in the Schools, engages Minnesota students in cross-cultural conversations with international speakers and provides high-quality resources on global issues to enhance curricula and build the necessary skills for students to live, work and lead in a global society. Over the past 17 years, MIC has worked with thousands of Minnesota school children and their teachers to increase international understanding and awareness.

and television series administered and produced by the Foreign Policy Association. MIC provides the study materials, logistical support, as well as a resource directory of local expert speakers in foreign affairs. We were also proud to offer student scholarships to our 2012 Great Decisions Conference, where 59 area students (out of an audience of 150) attended free of charge.

MIC’s Community Programs connect the international with the personal. They offer internationally themed programs in a fun, engaging, and immersive way with an emphasis on face-to-face connections.

The largest of those programs is MIC’s Great Decisions foreign policy discussion group network. Great Decisions groups continue to thrive in Minnesota with a statewide presence of 57 groups meeting with an attendance of 8,950 for the 2012-13 year. The Great Decisions Conference held in October of 2012 was attended by 149 participants, who came from every corner of Minnesota to discuss Global Health, one of the Foreign Policy Association’s 2013 selected discussion topics. The event featured keynote speaker, Lois Quam, Head of the State Department’s Global Health Initiative, as well as additional speakers Simon Stevens, United Health Group; Gene Bukhman of Harvard Medical School; Fred de Sam Lazaro of PBS’s Newshour; and Jacob Gayle of the Medtronic Foundation. Because the Star Tribune continued the Great Decisions’ collaboration with MIC

through the 2013 Great Decisions topics, John Rash, editorial writer and columnist, participated in the panel discussion at last year’s conference and presented at the World Affairs Councils National Conference last November with MIC President, Carol Engebretson Byrne.

Other highlighted community programs include Culture through Cuisine, an event series that offers members a chance to share an authentic ethnic meal at a local restaurant with members and speakers from that ethnic group, and enRoute, a series of networking event for young professionals focused on international career paths.

Finally, the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), a partnership between MIC and the U.S. State Department, has continued its prominent position in the State Department’s visiting leaders’ network. IVLP arranged 496 professional appointments for 522 international visitors this year, including a group of 19 visitors representing 17 different countries touring the U.S. to discuss global women’s health issues and promote international cooperation on the common challenges in preventing, treating, and managing health problems for women around the world. Their visit also included a reception attended by 74 members of the public. Our success in arranging professional appointments with international visitors has been responsible for keeping Minnesota and the Twin Cities center stage with the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C.
