Exploring Iskandar Malaysia

Tay Beng Chai, Vice-President of MICCI, led a 23-member delegation on a one-day business visit to Iskandar Malaysia on 27 June 2013.

The aim of the visit was to explore business and investment opportunities through scheduled briefings and site visits.

As one of the most active economic zones in the country, the visit was an attraction not to be missed. Accompanied by Yeap Kok Peng, Senior Vice President for Marketing and Investment, Iskandar Malaysia, the visit covered tours to some of the flagship zones including Medini, Nusajaya, Educity, Legoland, Putri Harbour, Port of Tanjung Pelepas, Senai International Airport and the Johor Premium Outlet.

In relation to investment potentials, six service-based sectors have been identified as new pillars to further strengthen the economic position of the region. They include creative, education, financial advisory and consulting, healthcare, logistics, and tourism.

In addition, companies operating in the region will enjoy exemption from corporate income tax for a period of 10 years in respect of statutory income derived from qualifying activities; and exemption from compliance with the withholding tax provisions on payment of royalty and services fee to non-residents for a period of 10 years from commencement of operations.

Driving Human Capital Forward

Human Capital remains one of the key issues that MICCI is focussed on in 2013.

The 2013 Future ASEAN Leadership un-Conference was an interactive event, harnessing the value of co-creation and crowd sourcing to create cutting-edge research that will define the skills needed by future leaders.

How companies embrace new technologies, tools and social media platforms will define which will win the war for talent.

The event program comprised four distinct sessions, each opened by a panel of young business leaders tasked with identifying and framing key topics to be discussed.

MICCI officers and Members participated in this Conference Board event in June with the object of providing insight to the following questions:

1. What is the future going to look like?

What are the forces that will be driving us to change our existing leadership models in an evolving world?

2. What skills are future leaders going to need?

In volatile times the need for collaboration, agility and t-shaped thinking will define the success of future leaders.

3. What are the internal strategies for developing future leaders?

As business across the ASEAN region continues to grow, companies will need to ensure a constant pipeline of future talent.

4. What are the tools in place to achieve this?

How companies embrace new technologies, tools and social media platforms will define which will win the war for talent.

Following audience-led voting to decide final topics, delegates broke out into multiple groups, allowing participation by all in discussing and defining the development of our future leaders.

Each group was facilitated by leading HR practitioners.

Post event, all findings will be shared for peer review across multiple media and in multiple formats. Whether delivered online, via podcasts or webcasts, or in-person at briefings, attendees will be able to comment on, discuss and frame the research, culminating in a comprehensive report defining the future of ASEAN leadership.

MICCI will use these findings to help guide its own engagement with the Government in areas of Education and Human Capital development on behalf of MICCI Members.

The luncheon provided an ideal opportunity for the Chamber to get an update on a number of matters that had previously been raised with the Chief Justice including the ongoing need to have quality superior court judges available to handle commercial and trade disputes. !To that end, the Chamber highlighted the need to expand the knowledge and commercial acumen of judges specifically in the oil & gas and construction industries, and suggested that more judges from the Bar be appointed. !The Chamber acknowledged and applauded the training programmes available for judges under the leadership of Tun Arifin. !The Chief Justice confirmed that it would be a permanent fixture in the efforts to keep judges well updated. !These endeavours have already contributed towards an increase in the business community’s confidence level. !For example, it is heartening to note that ExxonMobil Exploration & Production Malaysia Inc has

expressed its full confidence in the integrity and caliber of the judiciary, so much so that the company recently made the decision to amend the dispute resolution provision in their standard contract templates (which had previously provided for reference to arbitration), to now submitting to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Courts of Malaysia. !For more information please contact Kavitha Muthiah [email protected].
