Analysis and Intervention Evaluation in China, 09/01/02-05/31/08 1-year no cost extension, (R01 TW05938), $1,277,371.

Purpose: The objective is to build research capacity in China in the economics of tobacco control. Studies will examine the impact of an additional tobacco tax, economic costs of smoking, and cost-effectiveness of tobacco control interventions. These results will inform policymakers in China's provincial and central governments.

Ill Primary Care Patients at Risk for Depression and Disability, 04/01/03-12/31/04, (048223)

Purpose: The main objective of this research is to evaluate the clinical and economic value of identifying and referring medically ill primary care patients who are depressed or at high risk for depression and subsequent disability to outreach psychosocial services provided by behavioral care managers.

2003-2007 Co-Investigator

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Depression in Primary Care: Linking Clinical

Systems and Strategies, 07/01/03-06/30/07, (048170), $504,587.

Page 9: MICHAEL K. ONG, M.D. Ph.D. - healthequity.berkeley.edu...Tim Provias 2010, research mentor, UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine Current Position: Health System Clinician, Northwestern

9 of 37

Purpose: The objective is to demonstrate that linking clinical with system best practices significantly improves depression treatment in primary care within an open health care system. This program evaluates payments to primary care physicians for depression treatment, off-site telephone care management, and improved psychiatric consultation access.

2005-2007 Principal Investigator

Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation/UCLA, Effectiveness of Tobacco Control

Approaches in Smokers with Comorbid Alcohol, Drug, or Mental Disorders. 12/15/05-12/14/07 1-year no cost extension, (20050683), $30,000

Purpose: Individuals with comorbid alcohol, drug, or mental (ADM) disorders combined make up over 40% of all smokers in the U.S. The objectives are to examine how well primary care physicians advise smokers with comorbid ADM disorders to quit, and what factors affect provision of advice; and how likely smokers with comorbid ADM disorders will quit when faced with higher cigarette prices.

2006-2009 Co-Investigator

National Institute of Mental Health, Center for Research on Quality in Managed Care, 08/01/06–07/31/09 (P30 MH068639), $8,036,576

The major goals of the Center are to provide a research base for determining how to improve quality of care within organized systems of care in their local community contexts, and to provide information to society on the cost and health consequences of implementing such programs in sustainable ways.

2006-2008 Principal Investigator

California HealthCare Foundation (CHCF), Acting to Reduce Variation in Utilization, 09/15/06–1/31/08 no cost extension, (06-1311), $240,000

The objective is to identify modifiable underlying factors of hospital resource utilization variation at the hospital, physician, or patient level that could improve patient care processes and reduce hospital resource use. These factors are examined in patients with either congestive heart failure or severe chronic liver disease, and hospitalized at University of California hospitals.

2007 Co-Investigator

Los Angeles County/Department of Health Services, Data Analysis of PHRETS Survey, 04/18/07–08/31/07, (31101498), $96,187

This project will analyze data from the PHRETS survey. The objectives of the analysis are to 1) determine variations in disaster preparedness by demographic, socioeconomic, health, and psychological/attitudinal variables, and 2) examine the relationship between trust in public health and potential behavioral responses to a bioterrorist event.

2007-2008 Principal Investigator

David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Explaining Care Variation for

Translation into Hospital Care Process Changes, 04/01/07–03/31/08, $29,998

This project augments Dr. Ong's "Acting to Reduce Variation in Utilization" project by extending its scope to patients hospitalized through 2006 and to patients who both died and survived.

2007-2008 Principal Investigator

Page 10: MICHAEL K. ONG, M.D. Ph.D. - healthequity.berkeley.edu...Tim Provias 2010, research mentor, UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine Current Position: Health System Clinician, Northwestern

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Cigarette Price Sensitivity of Smokers with

Comorbid Alcohol, Drug, or Mental Disorders, 03/01/07–08/31/08 no cost extension, (61104), $99,999

This research project addresses the following aims: 1) Determine if cigarette price sensitivity varies by specific comorbid alcohol, drug, or mental (ADM) disorders; 2) Determine whether factors, such as treatment of ADM disorders, exist that increase the likelihood that smokers with comorbid ADM disorders will quit following a cigarette tax increase.

2007-2009 Principal Investigator

California Dept. of Public Health-California Tobacco Control Program CDPH-CTCP,

Economic Impact of Smoke-Free Multi-Unit Housing and Tribal Casinos, 10/01/07–06/30/09, (07-65582), $272,279

This proposal would conduct a statewide survey of multi-unit housing and multi-unit housing owners/managers in various and appropriate areas of California to determine tobacco-related and second-hand-smoke effects on multi-unit housing, and conduct a simulation of the economic benefits of smoke-free tribal casinos.

2007-2011 Co-Investigator

Centers for Disease Control, From Guideline to Practice: A Nursing Intervention to

Help Smokers Quit, 09/30/07–03/31/11 (R18 DP001149), $1,346,238

This proposal develops and evaluates a web-based educational program tailored for nurses working in acute care hospitals to improve nursing performance in smoking cessation interventions in three different states in the U.S.

2007-2010 Principal Investigator

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Navigating Health Care in the U.S. for Chinese

American Seniors, 10/01/07–12/31/10, (NR07-01), $224,967

The purpose of this collaborative project is to produce practical and actionable video vignettes that address the following barriers to realized health care access among CA seniors: 1) lack of understanding about how the US health care system works, and 2) ineffective communication with their caretakers (e.g., their adult children and their health care providers) due to language barriers and cultural alienation.

2007-2011 Co-Investigator

National Institute of Mental Health, Impact of the Medicare Part D Benzodiazepine

Exclusion on Managed Care Patients, 07/01/07–05/31/11, (R01 MH079034), $246,772

The objective is to examine the associations between the loss of benzodiazepine coverage resulting from the Medicare Part D exclusion and changes in use of psychotropic drugs, drug expenditures, behavioral outpatient visits, hospitalizations, emergency department visits, medical outpatient visits, and overall health care expenditures among Medicare managed care enrollees with benzodiazepine use and those with new anxiety diagnoses.

2007-2012 Co-Investigator

National Institute of Mental Health, Community Partners in Care, 09/21/07–05/31/12, (R01 MH078853-01A1), $3,442,052

A multiphase study to examine the effects of a community-engagement approach to implementing evidence-based interventions and to initiate and evaluate a community-wide implementation using the lessons learned from the first phase.

2008-2009 Principal Investigator
