“Build therefore in such a way that you and those who are dear to you will use your buildings, look at them, live in them, work in them, spend their holidays in them and grow old in them with pleasure.”

-Leon Krier

Michael Mabaquiao’s work in

traditional architecture and

placemaking began at Andrews

University ’s School of Architec-

ture (Class of 2007, CNU Academic

Charter Award winners).

At DPZ, Michael joined some of

the leaders of the New Urban-

ism to work on some of the most

compelling questions of our

time: How do we design the built

environment to function prop-

erly as part of the natural envi-

ronment? How can good, dura-

ble homes be made affordable for

everyone?

At the university of Notre Dame,

Michael continued to refine his

design skills under Douglas Dua-

ny, Phillip Bess, and Joanna Alimi-

nesteanu.

The images on these pages should

provide a clear view of the goal

that drives him to work hard

and push forward: to make good

places and a better world.

Note: Unless otherwise specified,

all drawings and rendering are

North Branch of Chicago River,

Chicago IL

The Chicago River in it’s current industrial state is a forgotten topographical

feature that is perceived as a barrier more often than

as an amenity.

This project envisions the possibilities if the river’s

edges were rezoned as mixed use and developed

as distinct neighborhoods.

The project then is actu-ally comprised of eight

developments (only five are shown here) and por-

trays the Chicago River as a pleasure waterway lined with residential buildings, restaurants & cafes, parks,

marinas, churches, and farmer’s markets.
