School might have been out for the summer but Callum had fun reading the first two books in James

Once again most people prefer to read in bed or in their bedroom because:

It’s nice and quiet and there are no distractions. (Megan) It helps me get to sleep. (Harriet) It is very comfortable. (Lewis) I can relax with a blanket over me and not be disturbed. (Morgan) It makes you sleepy and you get peace and quiet. (Mia) It is quiet and it’s comfortable. (Robbie) It’s peaceful. (Adele) I feel it is nice and quiet and I don’t usually get disturbed.

(Stephanie) You can be alone without any noise. (Callum) It’s more private and you can concentrate more and take in more of

the book. (Nathan) In bed you can rest your head on a pillow…and the lighting of a

bedroom can be good for reading. (Danni) I get peace and quiet. (Cameron) I can get nice and comfy and I can relax and enjoy the book.

(Joshua)

Jamie says that what you really need is: ‘Somewhere that is comfy, has good lighting and is peaceful because if it has these then you will probably be more likely to read there.’Thomas likes to read in Waterstones because ‘there’s a wholeload of books to choose from’ whilst Julia likes the ‘quiet of the library.’Rosie reads ‘in the garden because you can relax and enjoy theweather if it is nice’; Lily finds reading in her bedroom and thegarden ‘relaxing; and Elli thinks the best place to read is ‘besidethe pool on holiday because it’s nice and relaxing so you can enjoy the book.’

A selection of books read as part of Annan Academy’s READ SIX BOOKS IN SIX WEEKS Summer Challenge.

Patterson’s Middle School series and Rosie enjoyed The Donut Diaries of Dermot Milligan by Anthony McGowan.

THE WORST YEARS OF MY LIFE

First of all my favourite book was The Worst Years of My Life because the book was so funny and the boy in the book would do funny drawings about everyone. My next book is a follow-up from this book. Get Me out of Here is better than the first one because the boy and his drawings get even funnier. I would recommend this book to others.(Callum Davidson)

THE DONUT DIARIES (illustrated by David Tazzyman)

The Donut Diaries is a really funny book because it has a lot of humour about how he is starting big school. I would recommend this book to others because it is funny and interesting.

(Rosie Chan)THE MYSTERY OF THE HIDDEN HOUSE

by Enid Blyton

I liked the part where they tricked Ern to go up a hill and look for clues. I would recommend it to others because it is very intriguing.(Lily Glendinning)

THE HUNGER GAMES

THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PYJAMAS by John Boyne

(Thomas Watret)1 18

Page 3: Michael Morpurgo - Annan Academy English ……  · Web viewAdele) I feel it is nice and quiet and I don’t usually get disturbed. (Stephanie) You can be alone without any noise

I liked the short chapters that kept me interested in Bruno’s life and the different relationships he had with all the characters in the book. Although The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is fictional it is thought-provoking and it highlights the innocence of children and their lack of prejudices without going into explicit details. That is why I recommend this book.(Cameron Ewing)

P.S. I LOVE YOU by Celia Ahern

This was my favourite book because it was a heart-warming story about a girl called Holly who marries her childhood sweetheart, Gerry, and then is grief-stricken and heartbroken when he dies of a brain tumour. She feels like she can’t go on until she receives letters her husband wrote to her before she died. She

feels reborn then realises all her friends have moved on in life and she can’t go on without love. However, she learns to go on with a new outlook on life. I would recommend this to any experienced reader looking for a heartbreaking and truly touching book.(Elli Kirkpatrick)

DIARY OF A WIMPY KIDby Jeff Kinney

Callum Davidson, Robbie Conaghan, Joshua Le Vin and Julia Kaczykowska all read books from the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series during the summer.

THE WIMPY KID MOVIE DIARY

This is the last book in the series and it basically tells you how they made all three movies: Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Rodrick Rules and The Dawg Days. I personally find this book rather interesting because it shows you how they made some of the props and there are also interviews with the cast. Overall, I highly recommend this book if you’ve watched the movies

and are interested to see how they made them.(Joshua Le Vin)

This book is written by David Walliams which is good for me because I like the way he writes. My favourite part of the book was when all the football team played in dresses to help the captain of the team feel better for dressing like a girl. I would recommend this book for ages 9-14.(Nathan Shannon)

MR STINK

This is a great book and I really enjoyed it.(Hannah Thomson)

I liked the way this book shows how homeless people are just as

important in society as any other person. Even though this book is written in a humorous way, it has a serious meaning to it. I would recommend this book as it is a very enjoyable read, funny and interesting.(Cameron Ewing)

CHOMP by Carl Hiaasen

I like this book because it is funny and has a bit of suspense.

I think it is one of the best books I have ever read. It certainly made me sit on the edge of my seat and hooked me in to read more and more and more. I would recommend this book to anybody that likes alligators and TV survivors (like Bear Grylls and Ray Mears) because it has alligators and a TV survivor in it.(Jamie Brown)

THE CHRONICLES OF AVANTIA by Adam Blade

It’s a book packed full of memorable characters such as Firepos, the flame bird, and Tanner who is one of the heroes who protects Avantia.(Harriet Power)

THE HOBBIT by JRR Tolkien

It is adventurous and exciting. It makes you want to keep reading when you stop – it is that interesting. The book is a must-read for people

that like intense and exciting reads.(Robbie Conaghan)THE HUNGER GAMES by Suzanne

Collins

I would recommend this book because it is full of action and excitement. The

scene is set in the wilderness of a dark forest, filled with creatures beyond your imagination.Everything is set in an arena. Twelve boys and twelve girls are forced to appear there and fight for their lives. There’s just one rule: Kill or be killed!I think it’s a great book and I recommend it to action lovers.(Morgan Heathcote)

THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY

In the third book, the Capitol made Peeta think that Katniss was his enemy instead of President Snow. My favourite part was at the very end … I would recommend this book to my friends because I think they would love it as much as I did! I thought the author described all the characters in a lot of detail and I could picture all of them very clearly in my head. I love this book so much because the author leaves the end of each chapter as a cliff-hanger.(Megan Bell)

GANGSTA GRANNY

Gangsta Granny is about a boy who thinks his granny is boring but then finds

out she has a surprising secret and they go out on an adventure. The author is David Walliams and my favourite part is when they go out and try to steal the Crown Jewels! I would recommend this book for ages 8-14. Even though it is funny the whole way through, it also has a very sad ending.(Nathan Shannon)

This book is great for people of all ages as it is funny and claims to be David Walliams’ funniest book ever. I really enjoyed it and would give it a rating.(Danni Scott)

RATBURGER

Ratburger is a hilariously funny book written by my all-time favourite author, David Walliams.

The story begins in Zoe’s bedroom where she devastatingly finds her beloved hamster, Gingernut, dead. Zoe was absolutely heart-broken and thought life could never be the same without him until one day she found a small fluffy rat and decided to call it Armitage. Sheila, who was Zoe’s stepmother, and her dad were oblivious to her keeping a rat in their apartment and Zoe wanted to keep it that way. Burt, the local burger van man, was secretly a rat catcher. He managed to find Armitage and capture him to turn him into a ratburger. Luckily, Zoe manages to find Armitage hidden in Burt’s pocket. Sheila and Burt then get turned into burgers instead. 5 stars (Megan Bell)

THE TAIL OF EMILY WINDSNAP by Liz Kessler

The Tail of Emily Windsnap is about a girl who is going up to the high school in Brightport

Bay. She had never learned how to swim and lessons

came on. She begged her mum to let her go and she gave in. At swimming lessons her legs started to seize up and the coach thought it was cramp. Later, at night, Emily went into the sea and became a mermaid. In the end she found out who her father was and her background.(Stephanie MacInnes)

KNIFE by R.J. Anderson

Knife is about a fairy who is desperate to go outside the Oak but because she has no powers, she can’t.

She meets a human while hunting and she sees him every night.

Knife learns all about the sundering (something that took powers away) and became a human and stayed one.(Stephanie MacInnes)

Logan O’Neill writes that during his summer reading, he discovered that ‘the world’s biggest bogey is 500cm long and is the biggest bogey you’ve ever seen.’

WAR HORSE

When you read a book you expect the book to grasp the reader’s attention, to be detailed from page to page. I’m telling you this book has it all – even emotion!

Don’t be surprised if you see a little teardrop in the middle of the page. Come on: join the master storyteller himself, Michael Morpurgo, in a powerful story of the truest of friendships in the worst of wars. (Lauren Warrick)

LITTLE MANFRED

I thought I would have a change from wildlife and step into the world of war and adventure. I like how this book takes you back in time as if you’re there and you’re experiencing it all. It says on the front cover: ‘The past is all around us.’ That’s when I made my decision to read this

book because I was curious about what it meant. (Morgan Heathcote)

THE BUTTERFLY LION

This book is good for people of all ages and I would give it a rating. (Danni Scott)PRIVATE PEACEFUL

I like this book because it is a tale of courage, sacrifice and cowardice. When I started to read it captured my imagination and helped me sleep at night.

Once again Michael Morpurgo has proved to be a firm favourite. Here is a selection of his books that were read and enjoyed this summer.

In this book you will learn a lot about Will and his family. Will has been through a lot in his life and he’s the type of person who would never think about giving up. Will’s life changes suddenly but he’s always got someone to turn to … Oona the elephant!(Morgan Heathcote)

This is a book all about a Springer Spaniel called Shadow and a boy called Aman. Aman is an Afghan and his father was killed by the Taliban. He and his mum were on a trip to England. Once he got to England he met a bunch of soldiers. They took Shadow off him and he and his mother were classed as asylum seekers.

(Adele Park)THE WORST WITCH by Jill

Murphy

This book is about a witch called Mildred Hubble. She is a very clumsy

witch and lots of the things that go wrong at Miss Cackle’s Academy for Witches are her fault. When Mildred’s class is asked to do a presentation to represent the school, something goes terribly wrong. Mildred didn’t know what was going to happen so she decided to run away but then she saves the whole school from being turned into frogs. The school ends up with a day’s holiday in honour of Mildred and everything is OK.(Devin Collett)

THE BEST HOLIDAY EVER by Pete Johnson

This book was great. I really enjoyed it. Now it’s one of my favourite books I have

ever read. Sadly in the story they never put how old the main characters were which I really wanted to know. Anyway, I loved reading it.(Julia Kaczykowska)

Favourites by Roald DahlJAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH

This adventurous book is about a 10 year old boy named James who lived with his mum and dad in London. Then one day they go to the zoo and tragically his

parents get eaten by an angry rhinoceros that had escaped from the zoo! Unfortunately for James, he now has to go and live with his evil Aunt Sponge who’s small and fat and his other Aunt Spicker who’s tall and as thin as a stick. Then one morning, when he was doing his chores, something very exciting happened … If you want to find out what happens next you’re just going to have to read this eye-popping brilliant adventure book. Overall, I think this book is a recommended MUST read if you’re a fan of Roald Dahl.(Joshua Le Vin)

I liked this book because it is exciting and there are lots of funny moments. It is reasonably thick and I loved it from start to finish.(Hannah Thomson)Summer reading just wouldn’t be complete without Jacqueline

Wilson.LOLA ROSE

I liked how it was exciting and thrilling about a girl who is on the run from her violent father with her mum and little brother.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for another great book by Jacqueline Wilson.(Elli Kirkpatrick)

THE DARE GAME

The Dare Game is about Tracy Beaker and she has been fostered by a lovely woman called Cam. Now Tracy skipped school and met some friends. Her real mother came to take her back to live with her but she heard her mother say something that made out she wanted to get rid of her so she ran away and ended up living with her foster mum again!
