Effective March 4, Michael Mullins, FACHE, assumed strategic oversight to grow the new regional health system that includes Cabell Huntington Hospital, St. Mary’s Medical Center and Pleasant Valley Hospital.

Mullins was most recently with Ascension Healthcare, where he was responsible for 12 hospitals in Kansas and Oklahoma. He focused on leading integration processes, structuring clinical integration, enhancing medical staff relationships, guiding financial success and mentoring executives.

Mullins has more than 30 years of hospital leadership experience. He served as Regional Vice President of Quorum Health, Colorado, and chief executive officer for Community Health Systems and Triad Hospitals. He also has led Gateway Health System, Tennessee, Kosciusko Community Hospital, Indiana, and Unimed Medical Center – St. Joseph’s Hospital, North Dakota.

Mullins is a retired Captain of the Medical Service Corps, United States Naval Reserves, where he served for 32 years including Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He holds a master’s degree in healthcare administration from Trinity University, San Antonio, TX, a bachelor’s degree in political science from University of Texas at El Paso and is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Mike and his wife, Meliss, have two adult sons, Nicholas and Austin.

Michael Mullins, president and chief executive officer, Mountain Health Network, announced today the corporate leadership team for the newly formed system. These new responsibilities became effective March 8, 2019.

Mountain Health Network’s commitment to continuing to provide our patients and their families with the highest quality and most technologically advanced care means defining and developing the new system,” Mullins stated. “It is my pleasure to announce these team members who will assume responsibilities and join me in leading the new system. Each of them brings a wealth of experience to their roles.”

Key system appointments include:

Dr. Burdick has been with Cabell Huntington Hospital for 25 years and currently serves as Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer. In this expanded role as Chief Clinical Officer, Dr. Burdick will guide the delivery of clinically integrated services that align with national best practices in quality and safety.

Dennis Lee, chief information officer, has been the Vice President of Information Systems and Chief Information Officer for Cabell Huntington Hospital since 2011, and has led implementation of CPOE, physician documentation, and a host of other health technology and systems.

Susan Beth Robinson, chief human resources officer, has served as the Vice President of Human Resources (HR) for St. Mary’s Medical Center since 1998. She oversees the development and implementation of HR operations, including HR policies, processes and procedures that support HR operations throughout the system. As such, Ms. Robinson leads the overall system HR structure that will allow the system to integrate new members seamlessly and efficiently.

Paul English Smith, vice president and general counsel, has served as in-house legal advisor to the Cabell Huntington Hospital’s governing body, management and the Medical and Dental Staff since 1985. Lisa Chamberlin Stump, chief strategy officer, has served as the Vice President, Strategic Marketing, Planning & Business Development at Cabell Huntington Hospital since 2012. Ms. Stump leads the system strategic planning, corporate branding and campaigns; advertising, social and digital media, physician outreach and community relations activities.

Monte Ward, chief financial officer, joined Cabell Huntington Hospital in 1978 and serves as Chief Financial Officer. In his new role, Mr. Ward is responsible for the financial operations, strategic financial outlook, leadership and performance of the Mountain Health system including its affiliated companies and subsidiaries.

Kevin Yingling, MD, RPh, chairman of the Mountain Health Network Board of Directors stated, “This management team has accomplished a great deal during the past year. My fellow board members and I believe that this team has the vision to make Mountain Health a world-class health care system.” Yingling added, “We are excited about Mountain Health’s opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the health of our region and make Huntington a health care destination.”

About Mountain HealthMountain Health Network Inc. is a West Virginia-based not-for-profit health delivery system comprised of Cabell Huntington Hospital, a 303-bed teaching hospital for Marshall University Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing; St. Mary’s Medical Center, a 393-bed teaching hospital which operates St. Mary’s Schools of Nursing, Respiratory Care and Medical Imaging; Hoops Family Children’s Hospital, a 72-bed pediatric specialty hospital within Cabell Huntington Hospital; and a management agreement with Pleasant Valley Hospital, a 201-bed facility with 101 licensed acute beds and 100 long term care beds. Mountain Health is committed to improving the health and well-being of over one million children and adults in 23 counties in West Virginia, southern Ohio and eastern Kentucky through understanding, respecting and meeting their needs.

New System Adopts Mountain Health Network as its Official NameThe Cabell Huntington Hospital Board of Directors has officially adopted Mountain Health Network, Inc. as the system name at their February 26, 2019 meeting.

“The naming process was a robust one,” stated Michael Mullins, President and CEO, Mountain Health Network. “From the beginning, the board recognized the significance of the new brand in representing the system to the tristate region. We are building a great system that deserves a great name that represents not only who we are today, but who we want to become.

Cabell Huntington Hospital (CHH) and St. Mary’s Medical Center (SMMC), together with Marshall University’s Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine and other independent medical providers, are creating a super-regional healthcare delivery system that expands our footprint and enhances access to higher quality medical care.”

“To determine a name that is worthy of the new system, we followed a methodical process,” stated Kevin Yingling, MD, RPh, chair of the Mountain Health Network Board of Directors. “A committee of leadership and board members from both hospitals was established. They understood the gravity of choosing a system name and gathered information from many stakeholders to develop a brand platform. The result was a better understanding of the system’s unique position in the market, its purpose, and how to enhance patients’ experience.”

The next steps in the process are logo design and brand architecture for the new brand. The goal will be to develop a unified design that links the hospitals to the new brand and to one another. Both CHH and SMMC have strong brands and rich traditions of providing quality care for the community. As such, both SMMC and CHH will maintain their individual identities including names, logos and colors while operating under the new healthcare system.

4 SPRING 2019

Mountain Health Network and Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) have entered into an affiliation agreement to explore opportunities and collaborate in order to enhance quality medicine, expand academic medical care and improve health care delivery for residents of West Virginia, southern Ohio and eastern Kentucky. Mountain Health, which includes Cabell Huntington Hospital and St. Mary’s Medical Center, and CAMC will remain two distinct entities that will continue to run operations separately and will remain competitors in many aspects.

“Our two respected teaching organizations have a long history of educating physicians,” stated

Kevin Yingling, RPh, MD, chair, Mountain Health Board of Directors. “A cornerstone of the agreement focuses on training and retaining higher quality physicians and health care providers

in all areas of medicine. By working together, we can enrich medical care through education, research and clinical trials while benefiting the patients we serve.”

“We share similar missions and values and working together in some areas not only makes sense, but can be advantageous to the

communities we serve,” stated Gary White, Interim CEO, Mountain Health. “Both organizations are regional referral centers known for providing highly-specialized care in the region. We look forward to working together to expand access for patients to advanced quality and academic medical care, close to home.”

“Health care providers across the nation are creating affiliations, partnerships and collaborations in an effort to deliver high quality care in more efficient and effective ways than ever before,” stated John Hoblitzell, chair, CAMC Board

of Directors. “This agreement is an example of how strong, healthy not-for-profit institutions that share a goal of improving the health of the populations we serve build collaborations, and we believe the future of health care innovation will be based on relationships like this one.”

“No one is merging or being acquired,” stated David Ramsey, president and CEO, CAMC. “This relationship is a collaborative working agreement. Our organizations have a solid history of working together to tackle health care issues for southern WV and this agreement is a natural evolution of that work. While much is changing in health care delivery around the country and in our region, many things will remain the same.”

As CAMC and Mountain Health embark on the affiliation agreement, the two will work together to explore in initiatives that enhance the quality of health care and promote community health.

Mountain Health Network & Charleston Area Medical Center Announce Affiliation Agreement

Pleasant Valley Hospital (PVH) and Mountain Health Network have finalized a Management Services Agreement for its hospital and nursing & rehabilitation center. This agreement replaces the previous agreement PVH entered into with Cabell Huntington Hospital (CHH) in December 2013. The new agreement was approved by the PVH Board of Directors on January 28, 2019 and Mountain Health Board of Directors on March 5, 2019. “For the past five years, PVH and CHH have had a positive working relationship that has benefited the residents of Mason, Jackson and surrounding counties,” stated Michael Mullins, FACHE, President and

CEO, Mountain Health Network. “The combination of shared common goals, dedicated staff, and quality patient care has formed a strong foundation for success that we intend to build upon.” “The affiliation with CHH has strengthened PVH’s core services as well as specialty services and I am confident that the new agreement with Mountain Health will further expand access,” stated Glen Washington, FACHE, CEO of PVH. “We have been able to better meet the medical needs of more patients at PVH, while having the assurance of access to a tertiary care hospital and Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine specialists.”

Established in 1959, Pleasant Valley Hospital is a not-for-profit healthcare system that provides community-oriented healthcare for Mason and Jackson counties in West Virginia and the counties of Gallia and Meigs in Ohio. The 201-bed facility includes a 101-bed acute care facility, a 100-bed nursing & rehabilitation center, three medical equipment sites and a full-range of rehabilitation services. PVH also operates 13 medical clinics. Pleasant Valley Hospital will continue to retain its name and continue as full-service, separate hospital in Point Pleasant with its own medical staff and employees.

Mountain Health Network entered into joint venture with Marshall Health and HealthtrackRx® to offer clinical and laboratory services to monitor controlled substance misuse. The joint venture will create a new organization focused on tackling the ongoing opioid epidemic in West Virginia and the surrounding regions.

The new laboratory will be located at 256 3rd Avenue in Huntington. It will provide drug testing services for physicians and hospitals and support HealthTrackRx’s GuideMed® clinical solution. GuideMed enables physicians and hospitals to provide new resources for safe prescribing and monitoring medication use in people being treated with opioids and other controlled substances. The program has been used by more than 30,000 people and initial results have shown improved patient compliance and medication use. Mountain Health is committed to providing services that both support safe medication prescribing and help identify patients at risk of substance misuse for referral to further treatment.

“We are eager to bring these services to our region and believe they will be vital in providing support to those recovering from substance use disorder,” stated, Michael Mullins, president and CEO, Mountain Health Network. The GuideMed program will provide a framework to assist in return-to-work programs and assure employers in hiring recovery patients. It also will assist physicians with safely prescribing and monitoring medications for those requiring treatment for pain management.”

The GuideMed program and its patent pending technology can help providers meet new legislative requirements for prescribing opioids. It provides customized patient reports to physicians, compiles data on risk and compliance, allows for centralization of patient education, and testing. The service will allow physicians to delegate the monitoring activities and reporting requirements to the joint venture, to help relieve the burden on them and their staff.

“Research and preliminary data from our program show that comprehensive monitoring yields greater success for our patients to achieve long-term recovery—that’s the most important part,” said Beth L. Hammers, chief executive officer of Marshall Health. “This new service is a means to that end, taking the burden of continuous monitoring off the physicians and their staff while still allowing them to chart progress and make adjustments throughout the process.”

“GuideMed originated from the goal of supporting physicians in monitoring their patients and properly prescribing pain medications. Our objective is to provide a turnkey program that helps ensure safe prescribing, while also supporting improved pain treatment outcomes,” said Dr. Doug Brenner, president and CEO of HealthTrackRx.

7SPRING 2019

Cabell Huntington Hospital (CHH) has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Advanced Certification for Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement. CHH is the only hospital in the Tri-State region to obtain this designation.

The advanced certification is for Joint Commission-accredited hospitals seeking to elevate the quality, consistency and safety of patient care. Cabell Huntington Hospital underwent a rigorous onsite review. During that visit, Joint Commission experts evaluated compliance with advanced disease-specific care standards for total hip and total knee replacement requirements, including orthopedic consultation, and pre-operative, intraoperative and post-surgical orthopedic surgeon follow-up care.

“Achieving Advanced Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement Certification recognizes our commitment to provide care in a safe and efficient manner,” said Kevin Fowler, president and CEO of Cabell Huntington Hospital. “The advanced certification verifies the coordinated and comprehensive care team Cabell Huntington Hospital provides to patients undergoing a total hip or total knee replacement.”

“This advanced certification is the product of phenomenal teamwork among physicians,

nurses, technicians and physical and occupational therapists,” said Ali Oliashirazi, MD, surgical director of the Mary H. Hodges Joint Replacement

Center at Cabell Huntington Hospital and professor and chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. “This collaboration among experts produces the absolute best outcomes every single time.”

Established in 2016 and awarded for a two-year period, the advanced certification was developed in response to the growing number of patients undergoing a total hip or total knee replacement surgery, as well as the increased focus on clinical evidence-based patient care as it relates to pain management, quality of life issues, functional limitation in mobility and the return to normal daily activities.

This scholarship will support full-time, undergraduate students who are majoring in a laboratory sciences program in the Marshall University College of Health Professions. The student must demonstrate need per the standards of the Office of Student Financial Assistance, and the student must be a resident of West Virginia or Marshall University’s Metro Area (Gallia, Jackson, Lawrence, Meigs, Pike and Scioto counties of Ohio and Boyd, Carter, Elliott, Floyd, Greenup, Johnson, Lawrence Martin and Pike counties of Kentucky). This award can be renewed for a total of eight semesters if the student remains in good academic standing.

Krista L. Denning, MD, chair of Marshall Pathology, said the department decided to establish this scholarship to honor Brown’s work in laboratory medicine and her retirement from the

pathology department of the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine.

“Linda graduated from Marshall University in 1972 and worked at both Cabell Huntington Hospital and St. Mary’s Medical Center as a lab

technician before going back to school to study medicine,” Denning said. “She graduated from Marshall University School of Medicine in 1993 and she did her residency in pathology at Marshall University. This scholarship will help students further their education in laboratory medicine, something that Linda feels very strongly about.”

Denning said this scholarship would benefit those who are interested in the array of specialties offered to laboratory medicine graduates.

During my first MRI I was shocked to realize I have extreme claustrophobia. I immediately thought I was suffocating,” said Monte Ward, senior vice president, chief financial officer and a patient at Cabell Huntington Hospital (CHH). “I wanted so badly to hit the panic button. I would take a deep breath, but quickly panic again.”

When it comes to getting a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) test, those feelings aren’t uncommon. The Center for Diagnostic Imaging (CDI) estimates that during an MRI, four out of 10 patients express concern. An MRI Imaging scanner uses magnetism and radio waves to produce remarkably clear pictures of the inside of the head, spine or other body parts. Tests can be lengthy in time and require the patient remain still to capture the clearest quality images.

To help ease anxiety and promote calm patients can now watch a movie or listen to their favorite music using

the state-of-the-art Cinemavision MRI-compatible entertainment system during their test.

“Patients forget about their surroundings as they watch a DVD, TV or listen to an iPod, internet radio or an MP3 player,” said Stacy Davis, assistant director of Radiology at CHH. “Studies have shown that MRI entertainment helps soothe anxious patients and minimize the claustrophobia that can disrupt exams. The result is often faster and more accurate exams and less time-consuming re-scans—leading to better and faster diagnoses.”

The Cinemavision system delivers sharp, realistic audio-video entertainment. Patients can bring their favorite DVD or CD or choose from a variety of options in Radiology. Isaiah McGlothin, 10, used Cinemavision during his second MRI at CHH. His comment after his test was, “This is crazy! Way better than the first time.”

The purchase of the Cinemavision entertainment system was made possible by a donation from Radiology, Inc. of West Virginia.

“As a father of five, I know what a challenge it can be to require a 9-year-old to remain still for an extended period of time,” said

Peter Chirico, MD, Radiology, Inc. “With the Cinemavision goggles, such a procedure becomes less risky and less costly by removing the need for anesthesia to perform such a procedure.”

Patients are researching their options for surgery more than ever, and the research shows experience matters. Cabell Huntington Hospital (CHH) is home to the da Vinci Xi™ Surgical System; the most advanced robotic surgical system available, and performs more minimally invasive robotic procedures than any other hospital in the region.

UROLOGY

“Robotics has revolutionized minimally invasive surgery,” said James Jensen, MD, a board-certified urologic oncologist and director of robotic surgery at the

Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center and professor/chair of the Department of Surgery at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine (MUJCESM). Jensen has performed close to 1,500 robotic kidney, bladder and prostate cancer procedures using the da Vinci Surgical System. “I was among the first 20 doctors in the country to adopt robotic surgery as a full-time practice, and since then, the technology, tools and techniques have only improved.”

Dr. Jensen uses the da Vinci to perform a wide range of procedures, from radical prostatectomy to urethral reconstruction surgery. The procedures are performed laparoscopically, but with greater precision and better access to hard-to-reach areas than traditional laparoscopy.

GYNECOLOGY

Nadim Bou Zgheib, MD, a board certified and fellowship trained gynecologic oncologist at the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center has performed over 1,000

cases using the da Vinci Surgical System.

“With the da Vinci, I am able to perform extremely complex procedures through the same small incisions you would find in traditional laparoscopy,” said Bou Zgheib, who is also the Chairman of the Cabell Huntington Hospital Robotics Committee and an assistant professor in the Department of Gynecology at MUJCESM. “The da Vinci Surgical System is essentially an interface for laparoscopic surgery, but it’s an interface with tremendous advantages for both surgeons and patients.”

Among the benefits for patients are less pain, less blood loss, less risk of infection and a quicker recovery. For surgeons, it reduces fatigue, something that’s very important in complex surgeries, and it provides a more ergonomic environment than a standard operating room.

WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY

“It gives us greater precision and control and better visualization of the operating field. Simply put, it enhances our surgical capabilities,” said Blaine Nease, MD,

a board-certified bariatric surgeon at Cabell Huntington Hospital and assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at MUJCESM”

Dr. Nease recently completed his 500th procedure using the da Vinci. He specializes in surgical weight control procedures such as gastric bi-pass, sleeve gastrectomy and adjustable gastric band.

“We’re getting people back to their lives,” he said. “The growth of our da Vinci program has been a significant milestone in terms of surgical advancement and improved quality of life for our patients.”

The Institute for Minimally Invasive Surgery at Cabell Huntington Hospital is a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery and has been recognized as a Center of Excellence for Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery by the Surgery Review Corporation. CHH is the only hospital in the state of West Virginia to achieve these designations.
