MICHAEL SAYS

“You’re going to love these exciting adventures if you’re a thrill seeker!”

Gopeng The idyllic town of Gopeng was once nicknamed “Tin Warehouse” during its glory days as a tin mining hotspot. At that time, the Kinta Valley region (where Gopeng is located) was the No.1 producer of tin ore in the world. Gopeng residents made their livelihood through tin and rubber industries until commodity prices plunged in the 1980s. Gradually, Gopeng became a sleepy town yet again, allowing its beautiful rainforests and rich natural ecosystem to take over. In recent years, history lovers who take pride in Gopeng’s heritage have begun telling its glorious stories, thereby preserving its culture.

1Gopeng Heritage HouseLike stepping into a time machine, Gopeng Heritage House is filled with cultural and historical relics that depict the bustling life of Gopeng in its heyday. During opening hours, the locals act as volunteer guides, regaling visitors with glorious tales of old times past, dating back to 1886. This quaint building with its signature deep-red façade is a definite must-visit!

2Gopeng MuseumA short walk away from Gopeng Heritage House is Gopeng Museum, a nostalgic zinc-roofed structure that houses hundreds of antiques, painstakingly curated to tell the story of how our ancestors made their way to this small town in search of a better life. Relive the golden moments of Gopeng and see how the townfolk lived many decades ago. Did you know? Gopeng Museum is more than 100 years old, and used to be a horse stable!

3Hup Teck Soy Sauce FactoryAsk any artisan, and they will tell you that anything good requires traditional methods and lots of time to make. This 80-year-old soy sauce factory located in Kampung Rawa, Gopeng, is currently operated by the family’s third generation. Stored in glass bottles without any designs or labels, the soy sauce produced at Hup Teck is only sold locally. The factory also makes natural, preservative-free dark soy sauce and soybean paste.

4Gaharu Tea Valley GopengOn the outskirts of Gopeng, about 2 kilometers away from the town, sits Gaharu Tea Valley. Feel your stress melt away as your surround yourself with gaharu (agarwood) trees, and sip on the signature HOGA tea while you refresh your senses with stunning views of the Titiwangsa mountains from the hilltop cafe. Before leaving, make sure to hug the huge gaharu tree in the garden; it is believed that the energy emitted by the tree can bring good luck!

5Adeline Villa & Rest House, Radak Adventure(White Water Rafting & Waterfall Abseiling)White water rafting along Sungai Kampar is one of the most exciting activities for extreme sports enthusiasts. Although the water does not run too deep at only 3 to 4 feet, there’s no mistaking the level of excitement. Swerve and sway for over 7 kilometres as you brave the roar of the rapids, while catching fleeting glimpses of views of wonderful scenery and exotic plants.

If something even more exhilarating is what you have in mind, you’ll love waterfall abseiling. After arriving at Ulu Geruntum Waterfall, take a trek up to the peak 40 feet above you. After all safety measures have been completed, lean back 90 degrees and begin the daunting adventure down the waterfall following the instructions of your guide. Definitely a thrill of a lifetime as you defy gravity and feel the waterfall rushing around you!

6 Gopeng Lan Jie Lai FunOne does not leave Gopeng without trying its lai fun – thick rice noodles made by hand. Usually enjoyed in clear soup with yong tau foo on the side, Gopeng lai fun makes a hearty supper. Located in the satellite town of Taman Gopeng Jaya, Lan Jie Lai Fun has been making its signature lai fun for over 40 years now. Another recommendation is Stall No.8 at the Pasar Gopeng Food Court, where you can try a curry version for breakfast.

7Pasar Gopeng Food CourtThis is where the locals come for breakfast, so you’ll know the food is good. Some of the most popular choices include: Gopeng lai fun with yong tau foo, wonton noodles, chicken porridge, and fu chuk yee mai (gingko nut, bean curd sheet & barley sweet soup).

8Gopeng Antique Kopitiam / Heritage Town Cafe GopengTake a walk down memory lane with a steaming cup of Nanyang black coffee as you listen to classic Chinese songs. It’s easy to spend a good few hours here, lost in your own memories or catching up with old friends. A wide variety of Chinese and Western dishes is available here; so it’s a great place to eat, drink and be merry.

9Gerai Mee Kari AmiTucked away in a Malay village, right smack in a residential area, is Gerai Mee Kari Ami. Offering authentic Malay fare like curry noodles, mee kicap, kuey tiaw kicap and more, the must-try is definitely what is proudly shown on the stall’s name – its signature curry noodles! After your bellies are full, cool down with the Malay version of a herbal drink. Simply mention “liong sui” when ordering from the friendly staff!

10Kellie’s CastleFeaturing a mixture of Scottish, Indian and Moorish architecture, the construction of Kellie’s Castle began in 1915 but was never completed. Midway through construction, its owner, Scotsman William Kellie Smith, died of illness while travelling in Lisbon, Portugal, and the project was subsequently shut down. Later on, the castle was partly destroyed during World War II, but its noble exterior continues to attract worldwide attention. The award-winning film, Anna and the King (1999), was also filmed here! Now, visitors can still admire the beauty of Kellie’s Castle and its surrounding grounds.

11Tanjung Tualang Tin Dredge No. 5 (TT5)During the tin rush, Perak was the largest producer of tin in Malaysia. After the decline of the tin mining industry, many related structures still remain here. One of the most significant reminders is Tanjung Tualang Tin Dredge No.5, or TT5. Built in 1938, TT5 was a massive dredge weighing 4,500 tons, and ceased operations in 1982. Today, it is the only tin dredge in Malaysia that is open to the public. Visitors can see how tin mining was automated with the advancement of technology, or even try their hand at a more traditional process known as “tin panning”.

Batu Gajah Visitors to Ipoh will often make a short stopover at Batu Gajah, known for its many tourist attractions such as Kellie’s Castle, TT5 Tin Dredge, Tanjung Tualang freshwater prawns and Pusing, a food-lover’s paradise!

12 Luen Fong Restaurant,Sun Mee Fong Seafood Restaurant(Tanjung Tualang Freshwater Prawns)Not far from TT5 Tin Dredge is Tanjung Tualang, also known as the “hometown of freshwater prawns”. During weekends or holidays, visitors flock to this quiet town to feast their eyes and bellies on giant freshwater prawns. With their signature big heads and prominent pincers, these prawns are loved for their firm texture and naturally-sweet taste. Whether steamed in rice wine or fried to golden perfection, every morsel is an unforgettable experience. If you’re feeling adventurous, order a portion of greens called “paku”, which are actually a type of edible ferns!

13Leng Sou(Tanjung Tualang Rojak & Ais Kacang)Warm weather calls for a cool respite, so make your way to Leng Sou Rojak and Ais Kacang in the town area. At this stall, you’ll find various selections of icy desserts like Perak’s signature Wan Tau Long (aiyu jelly) with passionfruit, or “Sarsi Grass Jelly Ice”. The rojak (fruit salad mixed with prawn paste) here also comes highly recommended. On hot days, locals and visitors alike are seen braving the heat to queue for their favourite treats!

14Ming Feong RestaurantFamous for its traditional Cantonese cuisine, Ming Feong is one of the few remaining well-established restaurants in Ipoh. The interior still retains an air of Chinese coffeeshop nostalgia, and the restaurant specializes in Shunde dishes. Its signature “puppy duck” (kow tsai ngap) applies the same techniques and spices used to cook exotic meat back in the day. Of course, no puppies were harmed in the making of this dish!

15Pusing Cha Kwo StreetPusing is also home to a sizeable Hakka community, and their heritage is evident from the colourful array of Hakka-style kueh available here. “Cha kwo” translates to “tea desserts”, and you can find many traditional favourites at very affordable prices. Take your pick from hee pan, radish cake, put chai ko, chu yap ban, black sesame rice cake, deep-fried sesame balls, kueh lapis and more. Some tourists even drive all the way to Pusing to fulfil their cravings!

16 Perak Agrotourism Resort (PATRO)In Tanjung Tualang, you’ll also find an agro-tourism resort that is perfect for everyone in the family. You can easily spend an entire day (or two!) here just exploring, learning and having fun. There are lots of attractions available: vegetable patches, orchards, herb gardens, as well as a petting zoo, bee farm and lakeside cafe. Ample outdoor activities, ranging from horse-riding and paintball, to off-road ATV tours and rubber boats will also have everyone spoilt for choice. At PATRO, learn how to make your own salted eggs, stay in a traditional Malay wooden house, or spend the night in a specially-designed capsule – all surrounded by the breathtaking majesty of nature.

MICHAEL SAYS

“Let’s take a fascinating journey back in time.”

Kuala Kangsar As the royal town of Perak and famed for its rich Malay cultural heritage, Kuala Kangsar exudes an aura of splendour. The royal buildings around Chandan Hill are a sight to behold – apart from the royal palace (Istana Iskandariah), there are also two more gems: the royal mosque (Masjid Ubudiah) and the royal museum (Istana Kenangan). From 1918 to 1938, Istana Kenangan served as a temporary royal residence for the 30th Sultan of Perak, Sultan Iskandar Shah. Built by a carpenter from Penang and his two sons, the structure is representative of classic Malay architecture, constructed entirely out of wood without using a single nail.

Kuala Kangsar was home to many Malaysian royal family members and British colonial officials, and until today, many buildings still stand tall as acknowledgements to these historical moments. The prestigious Malay College Kuala Kangsar’s alumni include seven Yang di-Pertuan Agong, a Prime Minister, a Deputy Prime Minister, and two Dewan Rakyat Speakers. Not far away is the Pavilion Square Tower, where royals and VIPs watched polo matches back in the day. From there, a 3-minute walk takes you to Malaysia’s first rubber tree, planted by the British government. In Kuala Kangsar, regal heritage and noble colonial styles exist together in perfect balance.

7 Kampung SayongKampung Sayong is the perfect example of Malaysia’s “one village, one product” concept. This Malay village is well-known for its namesake Labu Sayong: a black, gourd-shaped water vessel made from clay. The Labu Sayong’s fame is evident from the dozens of workshops dotted around the village, and tourists say that coming to Kampung Sayong evokes feelings of stepping into the art village of Ubud in Bali. You can even join a Labu Sayong workshop for a fully-immersive experience!

8Victoria BridgeBuilt across the Perak River 122 years ago, the Victoria Bridge is the earliest single-track railway bridge in Malaysia. At its opening ceremony on 21st March 1900, then-British Resident General Sir Frank Swettenham said in his speech that outside of India, this was the largest bridge in Asia. The bridge was named after Queen Victoria under two considerations: first, it coincided with her Diamond Jubilee year; and second, it was completed when South Africa was officially-declared under British rule.

9Kraf Negeri PerakThroughout the years, the Perak branch of the Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation has made numerous valuable contributions to the state’s handicraft industry. Going beyond just a management office, you can find a variety of authentic handicrafts and souvenirs sold here. If you wish to understand the local arts scene from the perspective of handicrafts, there are also many eye-opening courses and hands-on workshops.

10Yat Lai CoffeeshopWith over 80 years of history, Yat Lai Coffeeshop was shortlisted as one of the “100 Most Traditional Coffeeshops” by Tourism Malaysia in 2012. The signature pau (steamed buns) are made using traditional fermentation methods, and it’s said that even the royal family loves them! Come between 2pm to 2.30pm when these handmade buns are freshly brought out from the steamer – two to three hundred pau are usually sold out within a couple of hours. You can also call ahead to make an order.

11Persatuan Kiung Chow Beef Ball NoodleMention beef noodles, and Persatuan Kiung Chow is definitely a well-known local favourite. The noodles are covered in a fish sauce-based gravy, then topped with bouncy beef balls, pork balls and minced pork – a truly comforting dish that brings out the best of Kuala Kangsar!

12Tenka no ShokuOn the outskirts of Kuala Kangsar in Kampung Baru Jerlun, a huge red lantern lights up in the evenings, transforming one of the stalls at a market food court into an izakaya (Japanese bar). Here, you can enjoy typical Japanese fare like sushi, sashimi, wagyu beef, noodles and tofu. Having honed his trade in Tokyo, the owner of Tenka no Shoku decided to return to Malaysia and open a Japanese restaurant in this humble town.

13Restoran AdamTucked away in Kampung Baru Sauk is Restoran Adam, a traditional Malay restaurant that serves a deep-fried dessert called kundas. Reminiscent of ham chin peng (Chinese fried doughnuts), the kundas here is served with rich, creamy peanut butter. Combined with the sweet-savoury taste of the fluffy dough, one is never enough!

14Laksa Pokok Limau,Warung Telaga(Laksa)If you don’t fancy the taste of prawn paste in assam laksa, Kuala Kangsar’s take on the ubiquitous laksa offers a milder, more palatable alternative. The thick, smooth noodles come drenched in an aromatic broth made from dried chilli, tamarind peel, laksa leaves, belacan and fresh kembung fish. Add a few finishing touches: thinly sliced cucumber, onions and chilli, and your steaming bowl of laksa is ready to be enjoyed!

15Tasik RabanTasik Raban is a lake formed by the construction of a dam that flooded a small nearby village. It was featured in a scene from the well-known Hollywood film Anna and the King (1999), starring Chow Yun-fat and Jodie Foster. If you have time to spare, take a boat ride across the lake to admire its serene beauty, and drop by a few fish farms along the Perak River.

16Lata KekabuLocated in a forest reserve in the Lenggong Valley, Lata Kekabu emanates an air of peace and quiet. There is a stream near the entrance; and the waterfall can be reached after a short walk. With ample spots for relaxation, the waterfall makes quite a spectacular sight, which is why it’s popular among families, youngsters and photography enthusiasts.

LenggongWith only one main street running the length of this small village, Lenggong is home to a large Chinese community despite its humble size. Surrounded by lush greenery and imposing mountains, there are places galore for outdoor excursions. Live like a local and get up in the early hours, just in time to see the first rays of the sun stretch across the sky and lend a touch of warmth to the morning mist.

17Galeri Arkeologi LenggongThe Archeological Heritage of Lenggong Valley is one of the two UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Sites in Malaysia, and is also the first archeological site in Malaysia to earn this honour. The sites span close to 2 million years as one of the longest-records of early man, and are the oldest outside the African continent! Dating 13,000 years back to the Paleolithic age, the skeletal remains of “Perak Man” were discovered here, and you can visit him at Lenggong Archeological Museum.

18Sin Hup Yik Seafood Restaurant,Kedai Makanan & Minuman Sauk(Freshwater Fish)Nicknamed the “hometown of river fish”, Lenggong’s generous bounty of freshwater fish is what keeps food lovers coming back. Here, they can take their pick from patin (silver catfish), sebarau (jungle perch), tenggalan (bulu barb), soon hock (marble goby), sultan fish (mad barb), termoleh (golden carp) and more, cooked to perfection at restaurants that specialize in freshwater fish cuisine. The fishballs, made from parang fish (west saury) caught in the Perak River, are also well-loved by all Malaysians.

19Pekasam Warisan Utara,Restoran Ikan Bakar Tasik Raban(Pekasam)The Malay style of enjoying freshwater fish from Lenggong is uniquely traditional. Known as pekasam, the fish is coated with salt and rice then fermented, which results in a pleasantly savoury-sour taste. If you’re in the area, don’t miss Restoran Ikan Bakar Tasik Raban, a popular grilled fish specialty restaurant. Here, you’ll find a wide selection of mouth- watering Malay kampung dishes. Pekasam is a popular Lenggong souvenir – you even can drop by Pekasam Warisan Utara to take home this local delicacy!

Royal Belum State ParkSharing a common border with Thailand’s Bang Lang National Park and covering 10,000 hectares, Royal Belum State Park is the most magnificent forest reserve in West Malaysia. Its tropical rainforests are 130 million years old, making them older than the Amazon! Within the vast park also lies the second-largest man-made lake in Malaysia – Temenggor Lake, which is about the same size as Singapore’s land area. The flora and fauna have free rein over the land, so it’s common for visitors to spot many types of wild animals here. Not to be missed: ten different species of rare hornbills! As Royal Belum is a paradise of exotic flowers and plants, you might also catch a glimpse of the elusive Rafflesia, the biggest flower in the world.

Stay in a Houseboat In Malaysia, there are only two places where you can stay in a houseboat: Lake Kenyir in Terengganu, and Royal Belum State Park in Perak. During the day, the houseboat takes you around to visit the smaller islands on the lake, or stays moored in a safe area so that its occupants can take a refreshing swim in the water. Request the skipper to show you one of the many salt licks in the State Park, where you can observe the comings and goings of wild animals from the safety of the boathouse. If you’re lucky, you might even see elephants replenishing their nutrients at these mineral-rich salt licks! The next morning, wake up early to catch the sunrise and enjoy a leisurely breakfast on deck while soaking up some Vitamin D.

Rafflesia SpottingThe Rafflesia found at Royal Belum State Park is different from the ones in East Malaysia. Knowledgeable forest guides might be able to locate one on a hike, and you can see the world’s largest flower during its extremely short blooming period (usually 3 to 5 days in a year). Over the years, the parasitic Rafflesia and its host, Tetrastigma, have been inseparable – in fact, the Tetrastigma is the only vine in the world that can host the Rafflesia. It is also proven by science that the Rafflesia has actually evolved to “steal” its host’s genes! Many people know Rafflesia for its rotting stench (which occurs towards the end of its life cycle to attract flies and bugs), but did you know that within the first few hours of blooming, it releases a more pleasant fragrance? Due to the imbalance in the number of male and female flowers, and because of its brief flowering window, the Rafflesia is one of the rarest and most protected flowers in the world.

Other ActivitiesIf your schedule is more accommodating, follow your guide to the State Park’s waterfalls at Sungai Ko’oi and Sungai Ruok, where you can explore the surroundings and enjoy a quick dip. From there, head on to the banks of Sungai Papan and try your luck waiting for wild elephants, or follow along the trails of footsteps left behind by these gentle giants and observe their habits. Visitors can also make arrangements to visit indigenous tribal villages and experience what jungle life feels like.If you wish, bring along some household items or clothing as a gift.

Taiping Taiping is one of the oldest cities in Malaysia (then-Malayan Federation). It boasts an impressive list of 33 “Malaysia’s firsts” – like the first railway, the first girls’ school, the first prison, the first indoor market, the first city to have a Chinese name, and so on. Formerly known as Larut, Taiping was the earliest place in Perak to be developed, subsequently becoming the state’s first capital city. Today, structures built by the British colonial government still remain standing, serving as architectural testaments to the peak of the tin mining industry hundreds of years ago. Taiping is also nicknamed “Rain Town” because of its abundant rainfall, coming in first place in the whole of Malaysia. This is what breathes life into the ecological landscape, making it an important place for eco-tourism.

ROUTE 0 3

1Taiping Lake GardensStretching across more than 64 hectares is the jewel of Perak: Taiping Lake Gardens. This is the first-ever lakeside park in Malaysia, redeveloped in 1880 as a recreational attraction after serving as a tin mine. Set against a background of rolling mountains covered in lush greenery, Taiping Lake Gardens is indeed, as pretty as a picture. The iconic rain trees surrounding the lake extend their huge branches towards the water, beckoning to visitors to explore this exquisite green lung.

2Perak MuseumEstablished by Sir Hugh Low, the fourth British Resident of Perak, the oldest museum in Malaysia opened its doors in 1883. A nature enthusiast himself, Low was an avid collector of zoology, botany and geology specimens, and also contributed greatly in making historical records for the three major races and indigenous community in Perak. A must-visit in Taiping for a truly eye-opening experience!

3Taiping ZooAdjacent to Taiping Lake Gardens is Taiping Zoo, the first zoo in Malaysia. Thanks to its well-planned setting, making your way around the zoo is easy, and there are many animals to see. After dark, the zoo transforms into a Night Safari, allowing visitors to observe nocturnal creatures in their element. This is one of the most popular attractions for families with younger children.

4Telegraph MuseumBuilt in 1885, the first Post & Telegraph Office in Malaysia is one of our cherished national monuments. With over 134 years of history, it once provided telegram, telephone, postal and banking services to the people of Taiping. This stately building is now a time tunnel that allows visitors to see how technology has changed the way we communicate over the years.

5Antong Coffee MillSince 1933, Antong Coffee Mill has been making coffee using age-old techniques. Currently helmed by its third-generation proprietors, the oldest coffee mill in Malaysia is open to visitors who are curious to know how coffee beans are traditionally-roasted. Here, the staff will explain the charcoal roasting process and after that, you can also check out the factory’s office building next door, where Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the founder of modern China, once lived with his mistress, Chen Chuifen. Until today, the century-old mansion still houses some artifacts from the golden days.

8Larut Matang Hawker CenterAt Larut Matang Hawker Center, you can find all of Taiping’s famous dishes, packed under one roof. Most of the stalls here have been in business for decades, and are favoured by locals and tourists alike. Get your appetite ready and try the sweet peanut soup, “snow mountain” shaved ice, fried oyster pancake, radish cake, shredded chicken noodles, mee rebus, and more. Don’t forget to order a packet of Teochew-style char kueh teow to go; the piping-hot noodles are wrapped in a huge simpoh air leaf, making it even more aromatic!

9Siang MalamIn Malay, siang malam means “day and night”. This location couldn’t be more aptly named: it is the oldest-running wet market during the daytime, but come nightfall, numerous stalls come to life, serving some of Taiping’s all-time favourite street food. It’s said that the popular drink, hor ka sai (meaning “tiger bites lion” in Hokkien, a mixture of coffee and Milo) was invented here. Many years ago, townfolk would gather at this market to bet on the exact time the first drop of rain would fall from the eaves – a unique pastime that can only be found in the “rain town” of Taiping.

Kuala SepetangIn recent years, Kuala Sepetang has become a booming ecological attraction in Malaysia. Located on the outskirts of Taiping, this vibrant fishing village is home to a vast mangrove forest, protected by the local government since 1906. When the Indian Ocean tsunami struck in 2004, these mangrove trees acted as a natural shield, safeguarding the village from harm. There’s much to see and do in Kuala Sepetang: learn more about how the mangrove forest has changed the locals’ livelihoods. First, visit a charcoal factory to see their igloo-shaped like kilns, or make a trip to cockle or fish farms that flourish thanks to the contributions of the mangrove swamp. Then, look on in awe as an eagle swoops down to catch a fish in its claws, and at night, watch the fireflies light up like living fairy lights, illuminating the mangrove trees. The best type of holiday is one where you learn something new – Kuala Sepetang ticks all the right boxes.

Kuala Kurau Located in Northern Perak and facing the Straits of Malacca, Kuala Kurau is a predominantly-Chinese fishing village. Some areas are below sea level; you’ll see undulating golden rice fields or bright green crops thriving here. The village town and its port are divided by Kurau River – up until 2007, both sides were accessible via a ferry service. Staying true to its reputation as a traditional fishing village, Kuala Kurau is still home to some of the most authentic village cuisine that its residents are familiar with. If you visit, pay attention to where the locals congregate. Where there’s a crowd, there’s sure to be good food.

17Rice FieldsThis is one of the must-see places in Kuala Kurau, featuring elements of nature, seamlessly incorporated into the daily lives of the villagefolk. Here, there is beauty in simplicity. Coconut trees thrive alongside old cottages, and Chinese sundry shops become neighbours with traditional Malay homes on stilts. Village life is all about taking your own sweet time: walk along the trails by the rice fields, and stop to enjoy the light sea breeze as it sweeps across the surface of the sea.

18Joo Hong Chan Salted Egg FactorySalted duck egg makers in Malaysia are few and far between, but you’ll find one at this old shophouse in Kuala Kurau. Today, the second-generation owners employ a combination of modern and traditional techniques: after the duck eggs are automatically-sorted by size using a machine, workers manually coat them with a mixture of mud and sea salt, then roll them in blackened rice husks. After a few days, the salted duck eggs are ready!

The people of Kuala Kurau love curry, and they combined fresh seafood like stingray, shrimp and cockles with a delicious curry broth – goodness in every slurp! There are also selections of fried snacks and cool drinks to choose from; the pineapple juice at Long Bing is a clear winner.

21Ah Qing Prawn FrittersPrawn fritters are called see-ah jian here in Kuala Kurau. See-ah means “spoon” in Hokkien dialect, which explains the way these crispy snacks are made: a large spoonful of batter laden with shredded jicama, chives and shrimp is deep-fried at high heat, resulting in a crispy parcel of savoury goodness that’ll have you wanting more. Best enjoyed with the homemade chilli dip, it’s a popular take-out snack among locals. 22Orang Utan IslandEvery 45 minutes starting from 9am, a boat leaves from the Bukit Merah Jetty, taking you to Orang Utan Island on the other side of the lake. What makes Orang Utan Island different is that at this sanctuary, humans become the “observed”. The orang utans are allowed to roam freely on the island, which is built based on their natural habitat. Due to the rapidly dwindling number of orang utans, the Orang Utan Island Foundation also provides educational resources to help visitors understand these primates better and create more awareness. Knowledgeable guides will show you around, and you can see the nursery and conservation centre, where orang utans can receive appropriate medical care.

23Bukit Merah Laketown WaterparkAs Malaysia enjoys a sunny climate all year-round, water theme parks are an outdoor attraction loved by all. Take on the closed spiral slide, challenge your sibling to a race down the rainbow-coloured slide, or try the cavernous Crazee Cone – you’ll be sure to have a splashing experience! The waterpark also introduces new attractions from time to time, so each visit brings a new surprise.

Bukit Merah If lakes and mountains are what you are looking for, Bukit Merah offers both to put you in a relaxed mood. Here, you’ll find a waterpark, Orang Utan sanctuary, and eco-park – each with its own unique characteristics that make you want to stay on longer.

MICHAEL SAYS

“Sun, sea and sand! That sounds like a vacation everyone needs!”

Pantai Remis In the district of Manjung is a coastal town known as Pantai Remis. “Remis” is a type of shellfish, and it is said that this place was named after the abundance of remis shells along the beach. Pantai Remis’ main economic lifeline is its fishing industry, with many tourists driving all the way from out of town to purchase fresh seafood brought back on fishing boats. Apart from being known for its many seafood-based dishes, this humble fishing village is also home to more than 30 temples!

ROUTE 0 4

1Hu San Boat Service and Trading Co.A boat’s dockyard is the equivalent of a car’s workshop. Every four months, boats must be sent for cleaning and maintenance to ensure normal operational capacity at sea. Here, you can observe building and repair work being done on these vessels as they are given a new facelift. First, the boat is lifted onto the dock, and then hosed down. Sometimes, boards are replaced or a fresh coat of paint is applied. The process is complicated and time-consuming, but it’s an honour to watch the skilled men at work, staying true to this age-old industry. Don’t miss a visit to the fishing boat jetty located nearby!

2Pantai Remis Sian Tien San Tee TempleThe century-old Sian Tien San Tee Temple is the oldest temple in Pantai Remis. Every year, on the 3rd day of the 3rd lunar month, it is believed that the divine gods will eradicate disasters and banish bad luck, and henceforth begins a five-day ceremony filled with prayers and worship ceremonies. Another notable day falls on the 8th – 12th of the 11th lunar month, where a celebration is held to commemorate the safe delivery of the celestial robes. Even if your religious beliefs are different, everyone is welcome to see the unique relationship between devotees and heavenly beings.

3Fishing Boat JettyAt Pantai Remis, visiting the fishing boat jetty is a must! If you’re lucky enough to catch the fishing boats returning to dock, you can also purchase freshly-caught seafood as you observe the fishermen picking out their best catch of the day.

5Diamond Curry Mee, Qing Qing Curry Mee (Seafood Curry Noodles)What makes Pantai Remis curry noodles different is that each bowl comes laden with succulent chunks of seafood. The star of the show is the handmade “secret” sauce, which you can also buy home to make your own grilled fish. The savoury bubur lambuk (mixed porridge) is made without beef so that it can also be enjoyed by Chinese and Indians. Selections of traditional Malay snacks are also available here.(Tip: Sweet dessert soups, like red bean or mung bean soup, are known as “bubur” in Malay.)

Segari Segari is the longest beach in the district of Manjung, thereby earning the nickname “Pasir Panjang” (long beach). The Perak State Fisheries Department set up a turtle sanctuary here to collect and hatch turtle eggs, and then return the successfully-hatched baby turtles back to the sea. Out of the 7 species of turtles in the world, 3 can be found in Malaysia. Green Turtles and Olive Ridley Turtles have been known to come to Segari. In addition to conducting sea turtle research, Seagari Turtle Sanctuary has also set up incubation and breeding areas, as well as a museum to share more conservation-related information with the public. This helps to generate awareness so that everyone can work hand in hand to save the ocean and her majestic creatures.

Teluk SenanginEven on weekends, Teluk Senangin might not be the most crowded beach, so people-watching isn’t the best thing to do here. But if you’re looking for some peace and quiet, this is the perfect spot. Teluk Senangin is popular among anglers, and you can also hire a boat to go open sea fishing. In recent years, many national-scale fishing and sailing competitions have been held here, attracting a large number of tourists. There’s also no need to rush back home after a day of fun in the sun; accommodation options from beach chalets to hotels to homestays are readily available. At the end of the beach is a forest reserve called Bukit Tanjung Hantu, whose rich natural resources remain untouched by man to this day.

Pangkor IslandLegend has it that Pangkor Island’s name is derived from the Thai language – pang ko means “beautiful island”. Among locals, it’s also known as Bat Island because of its shape. During the British colonial area, the army built a lighthouse on the east side of the island, right where the “bat’s head” would be. According to folklore, this would allow the British to control the “bat”, and the people of Pangkor would obey their commands. Until today, this tale is still told on the island. The legendary Pangkor Island first made an appearance in ancient nautical maps, drawn by Admiral Cheng Ho during his journey to the West between 1425 and 1430. In his maps, the island was called “Chen Gong Island”. With its sandy beaches, delicious local fare and exciting water activities, Pangkor Island is the perfect destination for a tropical island getaway. Another unique experience is that here, you can even rub shoulders with villagers and fishermen who reside permanently on the island! In 2020, Pangkor Island was declared a duty-free zone – all the more reason to visit!

13Kilang Ais Batu Pulau PangkorRegarded as a sunset industry, traditional ice-making takes shape at the only ice factory left on Pangkor Island. Before the introduction of freezers and automatic icemakers, this factory operated around the clock to provide fishermen with ice, playing an essential role in the island’s fishing trade. Here, saltwater is frozen into huge bricks – if you visit in the morning, you’ll be able to see the how the workers “glide” these blocks of ice onto lorries or fishing boats!

14Tukang Bot Hoo HuatSandwiched between two fishing boat jetties in the Sungai Pinang Kecil area, is an old-fashioned boatyard. Pangkor Island’s seasoned boatbuilders inherited their techniques from South China, relying purely on the wisdom imparted by the previous generation to build a quality fishing boat from scratch – no charts or diagrams needed! In its heyday, there were 15 boatyards on Pangkor; but today, only 5 remain in business.

15Fu Lin Kong TempleBuilt even before 1930, Fu Lin Kong Temple at Sungai Pinang Besar is one of Pangkor Island’s main attractions. Many worshippers come to pay their respects to the numerous deities enshrined here.

16Sri Pathira Kaliamman TempleAbout 150 years ago, Indians who migrated to Malaysia initially made a living as rubber tree planters. Later, they began working as fishermen, and built this shrine facing the sea for the Goddess Kaliamman, praying for her blessings and protection from the turbulent seas. The annual Masimagam Thiruvizha festival is a very important event here, and celebrations can stretch for days; many islanders take part in the parade, reflecting the peaceful co-existence between different ethnicities and religions.

17Pasir Bogak As the largest and liveliest beach on Pangkor Island, Pasir Bogak is the place to be if you’re looking for a good time. Water activities like snorkelling, banana boat and jetskiing are readily available here. Make this the last stop in your itinerary and come over to witness one of the most beautiful sunsets in Malaysia.

18Teluk Nipah Nicknamed “white sand beach” by the locals, Teluk Nipah’s crystal clear waters are simply perfect for island-hopping, snorkelling, diving, kayaking and more. Lucky visitors might even get a glimpse of Pangkor’s iconic hornbills here! Built on the rocks overlooking the sea is Lin Je Kong Temple, a firm favourite among photography enthusiasts hoping to get a good shot of the surrounding view.

19Dutch FortAs one of Pangkor’s must-see attractions, the ruins of Dutch Fort bear over 300 years of history. The Dutch invasion and subsequent land occupation on Pangkor Island caused dissatisfaction among the locals, and after multiple engagements, the soldiers were finally disbanded and the fort abandoned. The old fort was left in a state of disrepair until it was restored by the Malaysian Museum Department in 1973.

20Tiger RockThe mysterious etchings on Tiger Rock (also known as Batu Bersurat) depict a scene of a tiger with a child in its mouth. It is said that many years ago, in retaliation against a ruthless Dutch general, his child was kidnapped and killed. When soldiers came in search of the boy, villagers lied that he had been taken away by a tiger. The numbers “1743” on the boulder most likely refer to the year these drawings were made, when the Dutch established a tin mine warehouse here.

21Masjid Al-Badr Seribu Selawat (Masjid Terapung)Built atop the water, this magnificent floating mosque blends in seamlessly with the seascape. Non-Muslims are also welcome to visit – modesty robes are provided before entering the mosque. The interior is nothing short of stunning, with engraved scriptures decorating the walls and pillars. Beautiful during the day and equally elegant in the evenings, don’t miss the chance to learn or see something new at this unique place of worship.

Since 1989, these simple but satisfying desserts have been bringing back nostalgic memories for all its customers.
