Tonya was about to become a fi rst-time mother and was unprepared for bringing a new life into the world. She was barely through high school, living on her own and for starters, didn’t understand how to maintain a healthy diet on a limited budget for herself, much less a newborn. Through the many programs of Catholic Charities, Tonya gained the tools to move her life forward and provide a loving, safe and healthy home for her child.

OUR PLACE provided Tonya with the necessary education to prepare her for childbirth and continued to work with her on child development and positive parenting. OUR PLACE programs are designed to follow parents from pregnancy through the fi rst three years of their child’s life.

Tonya gained the knowledge she needed to make smart decisions about feeding her baby and developed a plan to care for her newborn. The compassionate professionals at OUR PLACE continued working with her as she faced the challenges of dealing with her daughter’s development into a toddler who was learning how to walk and explore on her own.

The Knowledge She NeededOUR PLACE

Early stress in the life of a child has been linked to numerous health issues and a lack of educational and employment throughout their lifetime. Upon completion of the OUR PLACE program, 87% of our clients have demonstrated improvement in parenting knowledge & skills.

Tonya learned that positive teaching and discipline were key pieces to her daughter’s development, acquiring insights that were absent during her own childhood.

She also learned healthy eating habits for herself and her child by particiapating in a Cooking Matters® Program along with six other new mothers. Cooking Matters®, a collaboration between the New Hampshire Food Bank and Hannaford Supermarkets, is a six week course that teaches how to prepare healthy meals and shop sensibly on a limited budget.

With the guidance of her OUR PLACE social worker, Tonya’s life plan included vocational training in a secure job. She found peer support groups to help her along her journey as a young mother.

Tonya’s daughter is now starting school. She is healthy, adjusted and, most importantly, loved by a mother who is doing everything she can to keep their lives moving forward.

John’s life was never easy.

He was raised in a group home with no sense of family or belonging. When he became an adult, he lived on his own, but struggled because it was physically hard for him to work due to a birth defect. With the lack of a family support system, John barely survived, lived in a small, shabby apartment and struggled to pay his rent.

When his medical condition worsened to the point that he lapsed into a coma for three weeks, his life seemed bleak, almost hopeless. At one point, his heat was shut off and he faced the prospect of being evicted.

Your support helped him through those desperate times.

John began moving his life forward through the assistance of an outreach worker from Catholic Charities’ Parish and Community

Services. He entered the Case Management program; his life plane included education. With his outreach worker, he found there was training that allowed him to earn a living doing work he was physically capable of performing.

The Basic Financial Fitness program taught John to manage his money and make ends meet. He has found an apartment and is following a budget to pay his bills on time.

The support groups run through Parish and Community Services have introduced John to people who are dealing with similar issues and challenges. For the fi rst time in his life, he feels connected to his community. He even put some money into a savings account.

“The support I received from Catholic Charities was truly a life saver,” John says.

Goals to a Brighter FutureParish & Community Services

The Catholic Charities Basic Financial Fitness program is designed to provide people with a number of skills to enable them to make better fi nancial decisions and be more effi cient and effective with their limited resources. Creating a budget, understanding credit and using traditional banking services versus pay-day or car title lenders are a few of the areas covered.

Gloria said it was the most beautiful garden that she had ever seen. She talked about her mother and how she always taught Gloria to appreciate gardens, and how she must be looking down on her saying: “What a beautiful garden”.

Gloria is a resident of Mount Carmel’s Alzheimer’s/Dementia unit, and has a passion for gardening. She was having a hard time, however, her time in the garden relaxed and calmed her.

The new Healing Garden at the Mount Carmel Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Manchester is more than a beautiful outdoor space to walk, sit with others or fi nd a space for meditation. It is a transformative experience for residents.

The garden provides a rich, nature-infused environment, perfectly balancing form and function. It is a place where our residents can

fi nd comfort in a space that is completely accessible, so all residents benefi t.

As the garden continues to grow, the residents continue to benefi t. The goal of the garden is to help reduce recovery time and improve overall recuperation. Research has proven that outdoor spaces, like the garden, contribute to healing.

The work at Mount Carmel is one way we are creating award-winning care. Like the garden, we are always growing and adapting to new innovations in senior care.

This growth continues in 2017 with our planned renovation of St. Ann and the additions to Warde and St. Francis. These projects will enhance our ability to provide assisted living and increase the number of skilled nursing services provided in private rooms.

Beyond Healing the PhysicalHealthcare Services

Catholic Charities’ Healthcare Services provide exceptional nursing and rehabilitative care that meets the physical and spiritual needs of those we serve. We offer short- and long-term care in a warm and supportive atmosphere where residents and patients are cared for according to their individual needs.

We feed the programs that feed the hungry

When does the spirit of charity, helping and community begin to show in people? For Kaitlin, it happened before she graduated from kindergarten.

Kaitlin asked guests attending her kindergarten graduation party to bring donations of food and money to help support the New Hampshire Food Bank. Kaitlin’s effort raised enough to provide 515 meals.

Kaitlin’s mother contacted the NH Food Bank to find out what types of food were needed. June, when Kaitlin graduated, is Canned Vegetable Month.

Vegetables are an important staple of a nutritious diet. Canned vegetables provide people with a shelf-stable, long-lasting healthy food that is available year-round.

The NH Food Bank encourages people to donate certain kinds of food during different times of the year, such as peanut butter and jelly in August when children are getting ready to go back to school and canned soups in February when the weather is usually at its coldest.

Kaitlin’s graduation party was not only great fun, but a great success. It is one of the many ways you can help the NH Food Bank support the over 400 agencies they partner with throughout the state aid the approximately 1 in 9 individuals who are food insecure.

The guests not only brought a cornucopia of canned vegetables, they donated money and some of Kaitlin’s friends even volunteered to hold food drives for their parties.

“I’m so proud of Kaitlin. She learned how important the New Hampshire Food Bank is to our state and she thought of a way to help,” Kaitlin’s mother said. “I thought she might miss not receiving any gifts, but I never saw her happier than she was when we delivered all the food she collected for the NH Food Bank.”

About one in nine people in New Hampshire are food insecure and your support helps change their lives every day. And, as Kaitlin showed, together we can help to solve hunger at any age.

2015-2016 Annual Report | 23

Dear Friends:

As I write this introductory note for Catholic Charities New Hampshire’s Annual Report, I am compelled to comment on the number of donors, the number of clients served, the dollars spent on each program.

I am also drawn towards the stories that CCNH’s staff has gathered to share with us, stories that demonstrate in a very particular way the results of their work:

In these pages you’ll meet Tonya, a fi rst-time mother who was unprepared for bringing a new life into the world. She received help from OUR PLACE and our other services, to strengthen her family.

You’ll meet John, a man who lacked a family support system and who was unable to work due to a birth defect. Illness forced him to seek aid from our Parish and Community Services, to help him build his self-suffi ciency.

You will also see the newly-renovated Healing Garden at the Mt. Carmel Rehabilitation and Nursing Center and hear fi rst-hand how it improves the lives of the community of patients and residents who live there.

As always, I thank you for generous response to those in need, and for all you do in service to our Lord and His people here in New Hampshire.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Peter A. LibasciBishop of Manchester

Dear Friends:

As I watched the residents, their families and donors come together this summer during the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Mount Carmel Healing Garden, it struck me that I was seeing the best of Catholic Charities New Hampshire and what your support means.

We touch the lives of 1 in 13 people in New Hampshire though a variety of ways, including the Healing Garden project that is a place for our residents to fi nd peace and comfort. Without you, we could not help a young mother like Tonya to make a healthy and positive life for her daughter. Without you, it wouldn’t be possible to provide the support John needed to be a valued and productive member of his community. And without you, we could not inspire a new generation of young people like Kaitlin who help feed the thousands of people around New Hampshire struggling to put food on the table every day.

We have shared the stories of Tonya, John and Kaitlin in this year’s Annual Report. They are stories of faith, compassion and moving lives forward. They are stories that are possible because of you.

God bless,

Thomas BlonskiPresident & CEO
