we are... In 2010 Michelle Carlslund Illustration was

founded by now 26-year-old Michelle Carlslund – a

Danish illustrator based in Copenhagen. From the

HQ in the city centre the company is run by a two

man team - Michelle & Mikkel. Michelle creates care-

fully illustrated objects for grown-ups and kids. Her

illustrative universe is inhabited by colourful birds,

dreamy cityscapes, playful puns, adventurous

sailors and honey loving bears. She aims to make

work that is playful, warm and nostalgic.

“When I draw I try to turn the sometimes com-

plex emotions in my head into something light

and comprehensible. I often find it easier to handle

the little dilemmas of everyday life if I try to look

at them from above and laugh at myself. A sad bear

dressing up and trying to fit in is a good metaphor of

my state of mind on an off-day. A smile and a good

portion of self-irony add some perspective. And I

think that perspective is always a good thing.”

The illustrations of Michelle Carlslund are made in

many different ways. Sometimes she cuts and glues,

other times she uses ink and water color. A part of

the illustrations is made using an electronic drawing

pad – the approach depends on the mood she is in. It

feels good to vary. Common to all the designs is the

sense of colour and texture and the imaginative

and unpredictable universe. That is the best thing

about drawing - you can make anything happen!

Michelle Carlslund started her business five years

ago while she was still studying graphic design. In

2013 she went all the way to be a full time poster

maker / illustrator and she has been a busy bee

ever since; her posters, cards, totes and notebooks

can be bought in more than 150 design shops all

over the world.

Besides the poster making she often takes on

commissions or does fun design collaborations as a

freelance illustrator designing everything from book

covers to playing cards or wall paper.

the materialsPosters and cards: Good news! All of the posters

and cards of Michelle Carlslund Illustration are

printed in Denmark. 95 % of them on the sustainable

paper choice; stone paper. Stone paper is made

from limestone and the oil based non toxic binder

HDPE. The production of stone paper releases half

as much CO2 as the one of conventional paper. No

water, bleach or trees has been used in the making.

Stone paper is strong and water proof and has

a matte and lovely feel. Stone paper is cradle to

cradle certified and under the right conditions

(moisture, heat and uv-light) it will start to decom-

pose. Not on your wall, of course :)

Totebags: The totebags are made from Indian

organic GOTS and fairtrade certified cotton

and printed in Germany.

Notebooks: The brand new notebooks are made

from a mix of left over paper types from our printing

house. This way you get paper surprises of different

texture, thickness and feel with a minimum of paper

waste.
