THE INNER ISE SHRINENivin Nabeel, Michelle Friesen, Nicola Augustin, Hrishikesh Tailor, Giancarlo Franzoi and John Grzeda

SCIENCE Considered the pinnacle of Japanese traditional architecture, The Shrine is constantly being rebuilt every 20 years, with its construction techniques passed on from previous generations. It is constructed out of unnished cypress wood, and the plank walls out of thatched reeds or hinoki cypress bark. It has a linear construction style, gabled roof, and raised oors. The roof is supported by the exterior board walls, with independent exterior pillars support-ing the ridge board. The rafter extensions located at the gable ends, and the horizontal log elements which pro-trude from the roof's ridge, act as weights to keep the roof secure.

PHILOSOPHYInner Ise Shrine in Uji Yamada, Japan is a Shinto shrine. This report deals with the philosophy behind this building and its design. Ise Shrine follows various Shinto philosophies. The shrines are dismantled and the new ones are built every twenty years. This signies the Shinto philosophy that nothing is permanent and things in nature keep renewing. It also involves accepting the nature with all of its imperfections and impermanence that is, the philoso-phy known as “Wabi-Sabi”. The inclusion of water cleansing areas in the shrine also conforms to Shinto philosophy.

MUSICDuring the ceremonies that occur every 20 years to re-build the shrine, music is played to encourage people to par-ticipate as well as for religious purposes. While playing music, the participants pray and dance as the ceremony progresses. The style of the music played is of ancient court music and dances are performed in conjunction to them such as Bagaku, Yamatomai, and Ninchomai. Dramas are also preformed for entertainment towards the par-ticipants. A special structure is dedicated to the continuation of this tradition at the Ise Shrine complex known as the “Hall of sacred music and dance.”

VISUAL ARTSThe shrine was constructed during the late Asuka and to the Nara period in Japan. Before the construction of the shrine it was believes that spirits were in the forums of nature such as trees and rocks. Because of this, the symbol of the shrine was a wooden pillar surrounded by stones to symbolize the spirits combining with the spirit of the emperor. When the shrine was constructed it housed the pillar as one of the several relics it contained. Buddhist monks conducting the shrine also dealt with the art of calligraphy. Other art forms included pottery making and sculptures reecting on the architecture of the time.

RELIGIONThe shrines present in Japan are related to traditional ritual practices that occur in the culture. The Shikinen Sengu is not only a religious practice but also serves as preser-vation of the building to help keep it main-tained and from being deteriorated. It is be-lieved that the rebuilding of the shrine restores its power of the deity. The theme of death and rebirth of nature and the short life of all things is a continuing belief reected in the shrine’s life. The ceremony also acts as a means of strengthening the community together and reaching a state of purity.

POETRYIn the Japanese culture and religion of Bud-dhism, one of the many jobs of a Buddhist monk was to be a writer and interpreter of sacred literature and writing. A Dharma Master, poet, and a Buddhist priest wrote poems where several of them were inspired by the Ise Shrine. They spoke of in there poems a need for religious experiences that pilgrims could be a part of with the shrine. Monks also tended to sacred books such as the “secret books” where they interpreted them in the Ise shrine. By doing these things they believed they would achieve attain-ment, spirituality, enlightenment and salva-tion.
