Respecting the environment and site developes smart design. When starting projects I analyze the conditions that surround and support the program. I spend time researching site opportuni-ties and challenges before designing so to respect the users, the culture and ecology of the site.

After analysis I begin to respond to the conditions and restraints to generate design that will benefit the environment and users. In this transition step I focus on integrating climate response of the site like solar, wind, and rainfall to help determine form.

From the analysis and response I then push my concept further into realized form. Structure, material, and system introduction take the project from an idea to a place.I design details to reflect the original concept and promote the sustainable practices.

T H E S O U R C E : COPENHAGEN’S OYSTER BAR

The Source is an Oyster Bar and Fish Market located on Copenhagen’s Harbour front. The Oysters served are generated in the Harbour Farm, designed by EFFEKT, directly beside the Bar. Copenhagen has made huge strides to clean their water so it has become a hub for recreation and socialization.

Our studio partnered with the firm EFFEKT to design an adjacent bar to serve Oysters directly from the harbour. The goal of the project is to pro-mote the locatlity of the food source by offering the public an additional playground to engage with the water.

The Source reduces the distance that food must travel to reach the plate as to highlight fresh and sustainable practices.

The European Green Capitol Award went to Copenhagen in 2014 while I was studying there abroad. The city has made huge strides to clean their water to respect their environment and offer a hub for recreation and socialization. From my analysis Copenhagen is sucessful because their designs balance quality of life with sustainable development. Harbour Farm has the opportunity to inspire other cities to transform their underutilized ports into ecological and social waterfronts.

EFFEKTS’ intial design for the bar was rejected by citizens because the structure would block the sky-line. Copenhagen people have a lot of pride in their city landscape so with my proposal I responded by sinking the bar roof to the level of the pier and offering another platform to engage with the water.

W H I T A K E R B U T T E L I B R A R Y : Library for Environmental and Ecological Preservation

Eugene, Oregon Whitaker Butte Library is located on the North side of Skinner’s Butte overlooking the Willamette River. The preserved nature in the city of Eugene reflects the occupants sustainable lifestyle and respect for the environment. While our population exponentialy grows the conservation of ecosystems becomes more important. The Butte Library responds to both the scenery and people of Eugene by offereing an exten-sion of the parks landscape and specializing in environmental protection. A walkable green roof continues the park landscape to engage the public and reflect the butte form. Sunlight permeates through southern trees to cast shadows into the rooms, while the North facade promotes views to the Willamette river system. Architecture has contributed to a large amount of total emissions but with more natural and active systems buildings should now reflect societies goal of environmental stabilization.

Willamette Conservation Area = 70% OR Pop. Environmental preservation is now more critical than ever before. As the population continues to exponentially grow so does the need for land, materials, and energy. Human consumption and emissions continue to rise and more people need to be aware of the impact on the atmosphere and ecosystems. The Whitaker Butte Library will focus on providing resources for the public that will aid in the protection of this fragile planet.

The Civic Center for Design responds to Portlandians by promoting local upcoming artist, photographers and architects. The galleries will display local designs with an emphasis on student work. Student design is seldom celebrated but often more creative. Presentation space is provided for students to exhibit studio and thesis work and recieve public feedback. Currators will collect pieces from the presentations and move them to the galleries to display the individuals designs to a larger audience.

The building responds to Portland’s environment by capturing rain water, solar radiation and wind energy to reduce the need for active systems. Earth tubes reuse displaced earth from excavation for thermal mass and act as a wind and noise barrier for the interior spaces. This strategy replaces the need for excess concrete so it reduces the amount of carbon emssions. The tubes at the corner rotate daily to encourage public engagement and forms an opening that captures the wind for ventilation.

Original design is key to a city’s sense of pride and identity. Iconic buildings establish fame and promote tourism. Future design will be able to balance iconic form, sustainable prac-tices, and the human experience to inspire original architecture. Portland is ideal to host original design because it’s a hub of unique lifestyles and boasts practices in sustainability.

Kennel-Ellis Food Incubator Kitchens provide large scale cooking utilities for clients who desire to ptomote food or generate a busines. An individual can rent the kitchens to avoid risky equipment investments and potential loss of income due to a failed business plan.

Kennel-Ellis is currently a video gaming retail store with office space above. My proposal is to renovate the building to promote local business and community growth. The program name, “Education Through Demonstra-tion” offers more than just a space to cook. Clients will be educated about the kitchen as they learn by observing, practicing, demonstrating, and promoting.

The Lantern House is a pilot for sustainable residential living. The energy from operations and the emissions from materials are offset by passive and active strategies. Passive heating and cooling is achieved by the uncondi-tion lantern portion of the house that bridges the public and private areas. This gathering room is composed of recycled windows that allow sun to heat the space during the winter and send it to the conditioned rooms. During the summer months the windows open to direct breezes through the spaces to ventilate and cool.

The active strategies involve solar photovoltaics, solar hot water, rain water catchment and grey water reuse. All factors together make it possible to achieve a net-possitive lifestyle. The Lantern House produces enough en-ergy to not only offset the energy of operation but to cover the emissions from the materials.

The BILDS program is a collaborative Design-Build studio aimed at promoting sustainable living. In Robert Thallon’s studio we completed a 1,200 SQft home that met passive house standards. My peers and I integrated our designs to fit the constraints of a One Hundred thousand dollar budget. Situated in a low income residential zone in Eugene, Oregon we were tasked with constructing the Pilot house on a partitioned lot. Each year students of the BILDS studio will design and build on the adjacent lot until the block is filled with Oregon student designs.
