Identified “Barriers” Transcript issues
Delayed credit; “credit in escrow”
University articulation issues Will UC/CSU accept credit
granted for HS work? Database resistance
Is a commitment implied if I post an articulation agreement?
“Credit in escrow”
• Not mandated
• Negatively impacts student persistence
• Academic Senate for the California Community Colleges position
Why delay credit?
• § 55050. Credit by Examination. Such credit may be granted only to a student who is registered at the college and in good standing and only for a course listed in the catalog of the community college.
• Where is “in good standing” defined?
Why delay credit?
• § 55031. Standards for Probation A district may establish, as the minimum number of units before academic or progress probation is assessed, a number of units fewer than 12 semester or 18 quarter units.
• If not stated, is not the definition locally determined?
University Articulation Issues
• § 55051. Articulation of High School Courses
• “Notations of community college course credit shall be made only if community college courses are successfully completed or if credit is earned via credit by examination.”
Database Resistance
• Articulation happens locally
• Mechanism needed to indicate how a student seeking credit proceeds
What can you do?
• Break down barriers
• Ease fears
• Encourage involvement
