Julie Alexander, of Hanover, has been named this year’s winner of the United Dairy Industry of Michigan (UDIM) Excellence in Dairy Promotion Award. She

was presented with the award on Feb. 7 at the 11th annual Great Lakes Regional Dairy Conference in Frankenmuth.

The Excellence in Dairy Promotion Award, sponsored annually by the United Dairy Industry of Michigan, recognizes one outstanding Michigan dairy farm family member for his or her dedication to promoting dairy products. Award recipients possess extensive dairy promotion accomplishments and have dedicated numerous hours of volunteer service to the dairy industry and his or her local community.

Alexander has been married to her husband Jeff for 26 years and the couple has four children, Andrew, Adam, Jared and Anna, and one granddaughter, Addison. Along with their oldest son Andrew, they operate Na-Lar Farm, a third generation family farm that includes 1,000 acres and a 90-head herd of Holsteins that ranks among the top 10 herds in the state for milk production.

An active volunteer in the community and her children’s school, promoting the dairy industry has simply been a way of life for the Jackson County dairy woman. For many years, Alexander presented one-hour talks about dairy farming to the Hanover-Horton first grade classes, and she held an annual Easter egg hunt on the family’s farm for 100 community children for 13 years. Jackson County residents were able to attain an up close appreciation for the daily responsibilities tied to operating a dairy farm during two full-day Family Farm Fests hosted at the family’s farm, and Alexander’s Labor Day gathering every three years drew in more than 400 people from both rural and urban neighborhoods.

Alexander has served on numerous dairy industry groups ranging from the NorthStar–DHI Advisory Group to representing the state at the National Milk Producers’ Federation conference to being a member of the state and national Holstein association and actively participating with the Michigan Farm Bureau. She was named the Jackson County Dairy Woman of the Year in 1993 and received the Jackson County Farm Bureau Service to Agriculture Award in 2004.

Alexander is currently serving her second term as a Jackson County Commissioner representing the 6th District, which covers Concord, Spring Arbor, Pulaski and Hanover Townships. She oversees the County’s Education Strategic Priority, and serves as the chairperson of the County’s Education Team, Cradle to Career (C2C) Initiative, the Jackson 2020 Education Strand and the County’s Human Services Committee. Alexander has 22 years of teaching experience covering the gamut from middle school English Language Arts to adult education.

Julie Alexander receives 2013 Excellence in Dairy Promotion Award

Julie Alexander, Hanover, was the

recipient of the 2013 Excellence in Dairy Promotion Award presented by the

United Dairy Industry of Michigan.

“Julie Alexander’s many years of leadership in promoting the dairy industry and volunteering in her community exemplify the essence of the Excellence in Dairy Promotion Award,” said Sharon Toth, chief executive officer of UDIM, headquartered in Okemos. “We are proud to honor Julie for her dedication, accomplishments and service to the dairy industry.”

UDIM is the umbrella organization for the American Dairy Association and Dairy Council of Michigan. These non-profit organizations provide dairy product promotion and nutrition education services on behalf of funding members. For more information about the UDIM, visit www.udim.org.

Indiana Holstein Juniors

The Indiana Junior Holstein Association held their annual state meeting, Saturday, January 26,

2013 in Indianapolis. With numerous junior members present, the agenda was packed full of items to discuss for the upcoming year.Elections for the 2013 board are always the start to the annual meeting. The 2013 Junior Holstein Board is as follows: President-Macy Jo Mudd, Vice-President- Mallarie Stookey, Secretary/Treasurer- Annie Achen and Kanani Price, Reporter-Julia Lipply, district representatives, District I- Jeremy Penrod, District II-Danyele Clingan, District III-Hayley Jackson, District IV-Jackie Mudd, District V-Jodi Jones and District VI-Briley Loggan. District-at-Large members are: Skylar Clingan, Annamarie Settles, Sydney Day, Bryce Gingerich, Hallie Jones, Natalie Newman, Emily Gill, Luke Gill, Blaine Loggan, Kaylee Godwin and Katelyn Godwin. Congratulations to all board members! The 2013 Indiana State Holstein Show will take place June 12th – 17th at the Wayne County Fairgrounds in Richmond, IN. Tack and cattle may be brought in beginning June 12. The junior show will be held June 15th starting at 9:00 am. Open show will be June 17 with Nathan Thomas of Ohio officiating the show. The juniors had a very successful meeting, talking about state show judges and possible awards to be given for Grand and Reserve Champion, first place, etc. The three judges nominated were Dusty Schirm, Brian Behnke, and Jeff Butler. Different ideas for awards were embroidered jackets/windbreakers, chairs, blankets, and buckets of fun miscellaneous items and show supplies. We also discussed fundraiser ideas. We are still doing the I (heart) cow bracelets, windbreakers, t-shirts and cookbooks to raise the needed funds for the convention this July. New ideas for a fundraiser that were brought up were air fresheners with the National Convention logo on them, and a dance on one night during state show that would cost the juniors $1 to attend and any adults who wanted to participate could attend for $5. Congratulations, Jodi! This year’s recipient of the Derek Blough Heart and Soul Award was Jodi Jones of Marshall. Jodi is a tremendous individual both in and out of the show ring who has always had a heart and passion for her Holsteins. She is a sophomore at the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired and the daughter of Mike and Bobbie Jones. Jodi recently won showmanship at the 2012 North American International

Livestock Exposition. Through her sportsmanship and great character, Jodi is very deserving of this award.Congratulations, Sabra!Sabra Jackson of Frankfort was crowned the 2013 Indiana Holstein Princess. Sabra is a sophomore at Clinton Prairie

The Indiana Juniors are excited to host the 2013 National Holstein Convention and look forward to seeing several other juniors at the convention.

Jodi Jones received the 2013 Derek Blough Heart and Soul Award for her outstanding

sportsmanship and character. Derek’s mom and sister, Michelle and Emilie,

presented her with the award.

and is an eight-year 4-H member. She is also active in FFA as well as showing at both the state and national levels. Sabra is the daughter of Neil and Lora Jackson and has one brother, Alex and two sisters, Rachel and Hayley. Congratulations, Annie!Annie Achen of Benton County was the 2013 recipient of the Hoosier Homemaker scholarship for $500. Annie is a senior at Benton Central and is very devoted to her family’s dairy farm. Annie also shows her dairy cattle at the local, state and national levels. The judges for the Indiana State Fair were discussed and the 4-H show, on Sunday, August 11, will be judged by Eric Topp, with the open show, on Wednesday, August 14, being judged by Dean Dohle. The National Holstein Convention will be held in Indianapolis on July 7th-11th 2013! It is our time to shine and show the other states how much we Indiana juniors love the dairy industry! The juniors will have MANY opportunities to be involved with this exciting event. There will be a recreation center open to the juniors, a talent contest and mixer dance, a race track tour, chances to compete in the dairy bowl, a water park, and many other thrilling activities. There will be tours offered to many prosperous dairy farms and there will be a guest speaker on the last night of the convention. There will also be a raffle for the juniors that will include an iPad, a kindle and a basket of miscellaneous Indiana goodies. For ticket information please contact Marla, Robin, or any junior. Please try to be at our convention at least one day to help make it as great as possible. As we support the dairy industry, we need to remember to help promote Indiana dairy farms during this exciting convention. As the agriculture industry continues to be challenged daily, we are often reminded of the challenges we face, as the world continues to advance. It is an ongoing challenge to promote our product and the healthiness of not only milk but our cows as well. I challenge each individual to be involved and continue to be positive promoters of milk and our dairy cows not only everyday, but to also promote the upcoming convention in Indianapolis. Together we can make a difference by telling the true story of our life as dairy farmers to the consumers around us.Your Reporter, Julia Lipply
