Pheasant Run Golf Club is a world class,

community golf facility that opened its doors in

1995. The now mature and pristine 27-hole lay-

out was designed by Arthur Hills and will put

your skills to the test. The course encompasses

over 300 acres of Pencross turf, natural wet-

lands, woodland areas and native grasses.

Hills created large landing areas off the tee

but tightened things up after the drive with water

hazards and marshes. Pheasant Run has 4 sets of

tee boxes and can be played from 5,046 yards to

7,125 from the tips. Play all the way back and

you'll find a course rating of 74.9 and slope of

148, ranking it among the most difficult in the

state.

With length being a factor, Hills designed large,

receptive greens that are well guarded by stray

shots. Green speed and condition are amongst the

best around with speeds in the mid 9's.

From the President…Dear Fellow Players,

Wow, what a great season we have so far this summer! We just finished our 3rd Championship Series event at Dunham

Hills today. Just when you think things have gone a little snarlierthan you would like to see, we get a real treat. Two fawns in fullspots come across 13 fairway (probably all of 35 lbs each) and puton a show for about 4 minutes. One decided to walk over to myplaying partner to see what he was up to. Can't talk about that but itwas pretty funny. It makes me stop and think how lucky we are toplay this game and be treated to such wonderful surprises by MotherNature. The other highlight of the day was a hole in one by MarkCykowski!

On another note it was great to see Johnny 'O' recover so wellfrom his health issues and be able to come out and play in the MedalPlay Lee Gohs Classic Trophy Tournament. Congratulations andwelcome back Johnny 'O'.

Speaking of the Medal Play Tournament, Greg Davies had a lit-tle fun on Saturday after the rain storm going something like 9under during the last 15 holes. We had arguably the strongest fieldthis year at the new venue of Pheasant Run that we have had inyears. Not only that, rounds were played in 5 _ to 6 _ hours. Oh yousay, don't forget that was 27 holes each day. Pretty darn good paceof play. Congratulations to all of the players as you are becomingvery conscious of your pace of play.

Up next is the State Match Play, which for the first time in mymemory will be played downstate, in the Rochester Hills area at

Twin Lakes Golf and Swim Club and Blackheath Golf Club. Thiswas a difficult decision that Board made last year based from thesurvey results that many of you participated in. This has resulted ina significant gain in the applications so far. We will have an alter-nate list available for those of you that procrastinate in sending inyour application.

If you have never played in the State Match Play you have missedone of the greatest tournaments in the state for players of all abili-ties. Two rounds of qualifying for flights, one round of match playguaranteed, Saturday night Banquet Dinner for players and family, greens fees, range balls, Saturday night fun Skills Challenge thatincludes a Long Drive, Closest to the pin and a Chip, Sand, Flop shot. This tournament is not your 'Daddy's Buick' baby it is a whole lot morefun. Go to www.mipublinx.com and get signed up!

The new registration process that we instituted this year has beena great success. If you have not played in any of the ChampionshipSeries Events there are still two left. One tournament for the Seniorsand Net Division at Blackheath on July 15th and one for allDivisions at Fieldstone on August 12th. You can sign-up on line atwww.mipublinx.com or contact us at [email protected] togain entry.

Play in one event or play in all, but play! Look forward to seeingyou all down the fairway.

Over one hundred and fifty players teedit up at the 95th Michigan Open for apiece of the prize purse with an $8,000share for the winner.

The Orchards is a Robert Trent Jones,Jr. design with many national awardsunder its belt. The golf course is locatedon a 525-acre residential community. Thecourse rating is 74.5 with a slope of 136from the championship tees.

Randy Hutchinson from Traverse Cityand a former MSU graduate is the defend-ing champion and Randy took right offwith another great round at the Orchards.

With an early tee time, Randy fired around of 66 to hold the first round leadfollowed by Randy Erskine, BrianOttenweller and Chester Vandenberg withrounds of 67.

Randy Erskine needs no introduction ashe is one of the top pros here in the stateof Michigan and has five Michigan Opentitles to his name. Ottenweller from GrandRapids pushed Hutchinson last year forthe title but a nice surprise wasVandenberg a 23-year-old amateur fromMartin, Mich.

Willie Mack III and Steve Brady alongwith four other players were two shotsback, setting up some stiff competitiongoing into the second round. All in all itwas a good day for scoring with 37 play-ers breaking par.

The second day scoring found newhorses in the field. Barret Kelpin fromKalamazoo tied the course record with around of 63 to take a one shot lead overanother familiar name, Jeff Cuzzort, whoshot 64. This was Kelpin’s first event as apro.

Randy Hutchinson shot an even roundof par and several players passed him onthe leader board.

Third round action was much like thesecond round. Brett Kelpin continued toroll firing a round of 66 to increase his

lead over Cuzzort by four shots and a totalscore of 19 under par. Brian Hayward, anamateur from Grand Rapids, jumped inthe mix by shooting a round of 64 to set inthird place by himself.

Randy Hutchinson’s dream of defend-ing his title vanished after shooting around of 73 and leaving himself 14 shotsback of the leader with one round to play.

Final round action was all BarrettKelpin as Cuzzort or the rest of field couldapply no pressure to Barrett. Barrett justfired away shooting a final round score offour under par giving him a total score of23 under par and a total of 265 for thetournament.

Barrett’s final score tied a 64-year-oldrecord set by Chick Harbert in 1948.Chick is Michigan Golf Hall of Fame leg-end, who won the Michigan Open fourtimes, won seven times on the PGA Tour, won the 1954 PGA NationalChampionship and was a Ryder Cup cap-tain.

Congratulations Barrett!

Mid June brings thoughts of The Masters

and as a amateur, one way to get there is to

capture a U. S. Public Links Title. Soldier

Hollow Golf Club in Midway, Utah will

host the 2012 championship.

This year Cedar Chase and Dunham

Hills hosted the Michigan qualifiers with

the first on June 11th at Dunham Hills

and June 14th at Cedar Chase.

These qualifiers are long days for the

contestants as they are 36-hole qualifiers

with only a couple of spots available. This

year the weather was perfect at Dunham

Hills and at Cedar Chase.

Philip Gieseker of Ann Arbor took

advantage of the conditions at Dunham,

shooting a great score of 140. At Cedar

Chase it was Sam Stark from Hartland

who qualified with a score of 143.

The thought of competing for the

National Title at this year’s site, Soldier

Fields, drives these players to grind it out

for one of those special opportunities.

Championship Division ResultsMichigan Publinx 54-Hole Medal Play Championship

Every Memorial Day weekend this tourna-ment has attracted top players from all over thestate to win the Lee Gohs Trophy.

In an effort to improve attendance, play andcompetition the Michigan Publinx GolfAssociation moved to Pheasant Run Golf Club(Canton MI) this year and it was a home rundecision!

The field had over 90 payers, the golf coursewas a better championship venue and GregBores (PGA Pro) and his staff at Pheasant Rundid just a fabulous job.

The weather seems like it is always a factorand this year was no different with thunder-storms and two rain delays on Saturday andthen just a beautiful day on Sunday.

In the Championship Division Greg Daviesjust blitzed the field on Saturday!

Greg started the day just steady like he nor-mally does knocking down pars through thefirst seven or eight holes. Then after a couple of

thunderstorm delays Greg came out with fif-teen holes left to play in the first round. That’swhen the real lightning hit as he birdied nineof his last fifteen holes to shoot a great roundof six under par for the first twenty-sevenholes.

Greg built a four shot cushion over JoshuaBauer who shot 106 (two under par) and a fiveshot lead over Michael King and AnthonySorentino.

In the net division Jack Brown from FlintMichigan also started the tournament off ingreat form shooting a net score of 103 (fiveunder Par). Jack would have a two shot leadgoing into the final round over Bruce Fullerand Tom Mulhern who fired net scores of 105(three under par).

In the final championship round of twenty-seven holes Greg Davies wasn’t quite the samebirdie machine that he displayed Saturday buthe was rock solid firing a round of 106 (twounder par), Joshua Bauer did his best catchGreg shooting a round of 108 but there was justto much distance to over come. Josh wouldtake second place followed by Dave Vaclav inthird place by himself.

This was Greg’s second Michigan PublinxMedal Play/Lee Gohs championship. Greg isquietly building one of the best amateurresumes in Michigan with eleven major titles.One-Michigan Amateur, Three-Publinx StateMatch Play’s, Two-Michigan Medal/Lee Gohs,One-Michigan Medal/Horton Smith, Two-Syron Memorials and Two-Michigan MidAmateurs.

In the final round of the “net” division it wasa real dogfight between Jack Brown, TomMulhern and Bruce Fuller with each playerhaving his chance to capture the title in regula-tion. The three players finished in a three-waytie (one over par) for first place forcing a sud-den death playoff.

The playoff lasted four holes with JackBrown coming out on top for first place fol-lowed by Tom Mulhern and Bruce Fuller.

On behalf of the players we would like tothank the Publinx Tournament Committee, thestaff at Fellows Creek Golf Club and theOfficials who did a fantastic job!

Congratulations Greg and Jack!

South East Michigan will be the home for the 2012 StateMatch Play Championship. It’s been many many years sincethis title has been claimed in the Motor City Area.

For the past several years this championship has been heldin a Northern Michigan atmosphere or the warm rural country-side of West Michigan.

Breaking from the norm, in 2012 Blackheath Golf Courseand Twin Lakes Golf and Swim Club both in Rochester HillsMichigan will host the SMP Championship.

These are two fine venues that will offer a great challengefor all players.

The following information is a brief overview for eachcourse and what lies ahead for the players in this year’s tour-nament.

Blackheath Golf CourseBlackheath opened in 1998 and was designed and construct-

ed by Kevin Aldrich. Mr. Aldrich’s inspiration to develop thisstyle of layout was brought on by a visit to Scotland. On thistrip, he learned of the two unique types of layouts that could beoffered by this type of topography and he was able to producea gem in Rochester, MI.

There are two types of courses in the birthplace of golf, which are heathland and links styles. A heathland course isbuilt from farmland and lies inland from the sea. Links cours-es on the other hand sit next to the sea. As opposed to a linksdesign with the bumpy fairways and deep bunkers, a heathlandcourse offers gently rolling fairways and flat bunkering.

The name “blackheath” itself comes from the honorablesociety of men, which is said to be the first to establish a clubin England that was actually outside of Scotland.

The course sits on 128 acres. It features a good test of golffor both men and ladies of all skill levels. Playing to par of 71the course offers four sets of tees, challenging bunkering, andundulating greens that make for a true but fair round of golf.

Blackheath has already earned quite a reputation.Blackheath was selected to host the United States AmateurSectional qualifier in 1998. Crain’s Detroit Business ratedBlackheath as a top 5 must play in Michigan. Blackheath wasalso awarded 3 1 2 stars by Golf Digest.

Twin Lakes Golf And Swim ClubTwin Lakes Golf Club in Rochester Hills is a four star (Golf

Digest Places to Play) Jerry Matthews designed golf coursefeaturing wide sweeping fairways and huge contoured putting

surfaces. This links influenced layout traverses mildly undulat-ing terrain with numerous wetlands and water hazards alongthe way. Those who have not visited in the past couple of yearswill be surprised at the growth that has taken place in thisupscale residential community, as beautiful homes line manyfairways and form a significant backdrop behind many of thegreen complexes in this 1,000 acre countryside development.

Golf properties do not usually warrant a 4-star rating with-out providing a nice package of amenities, and the list at TwinLakes is an impressive one. First of all, two huge practicegreens rest between the clubhouse and first tee, with a massivegrass range nearby. The short game area includes a chippingarea and sand bunker, perfect for a warm up or for a morningor afternoon of practice. The clubhouse features an upscale proshop, plus lockers and showers for men and women. Therestaurant and lounge is wonderfully appointed, and the land-scaped outdoor patio is a great place for parties and receptions, and presents views of a natural area that rests immediatelybehind the clubhouse.

The service here is outstanding - worthy of private clubexperiences. Crain’s Detroit has awarded Twin Lakes with thehonor of recognition as the # 1 Women Friendly Course in SEMichigan. There are twenty seven holes on property - the newWoods nine opened for public play in 2006, and providesgolfers with a Northern Michigan experience featuring eleva-tion changes, rolling fairways bound by mature trees, andspectacular marshlands populated with herons and indigenouswildlife.

This layout plays to distance measuring 3414, 3172, 3029,2831 and 2322 yards, and is located in a serene environment, with no residential properties situated alongside. There arequite a few forced carries over marsh, though like the originaleighteen, the carries are reasonable from the white and forwardtees. We highly recommend that you include the Woods in anyTwin Lakes golf experience. The Estates nine also has 5 sets oftees that play to 3502, 3301, 3160, 2856 and 2507 yards, whilethe Links nine measures 3243, 3015, 2849, 2548 and 2113yards. The slope ratings of the 27 holes vary between 109 and133.

Teaching philosophy focuses on

positive communication and use

of drills to create an exciting

learning opportunity

During one of my recent rounds of leisurelygolf this spring I was playing with my friendand fellow golf professional Jerry Roman,Head Golf Professional at Hidden RiverGolf Club, and we were hitting a few extraputts on the final green and Jerry started tomake putts with his sand wedge one afteranother from about 10 feet. He mentioned tome that he likes to practice this inside of the10 foot range to get better feel and control ofthe clubface as well as it forces him to focusmore on his ball contact. Since that time Ihave had many of my students practice thisduring our lesson times and they have hadgreat success. The basis behind this practicedrill is to softly putt the ball with the leadingedge or blade of the wedge and control the

distance by maintaining the angles set withyour wrists. It’s fun to have small challengecontests with your friends while gettingsome great practice time in. Once you putyour putter back in your hands you feel anincredible amount of confidence with bothcontact and control.

Ray Emsley Defeats Mike FedewaIn 4th GAM Senior Match Play Championship

Gross Ile Golf & Country-Club • May 29th through June 1st

This GAM Senior Match Play tournament

field just keeps getting stronger and popular

among Michigan Seniors. Over 75 seniors

and 30 super seniors were in the field on the

29th to qualify for match play starting on the

30th.

The defending champion Greg Reynolds

set the tone in the “Senior” division, shoot-

ing a round of 72 to share medalist honors

with Dan Longeway and Craig Vanassen.

In the Super Senior division, Neil

McQuarrie and John Thrasher shared the

honors with rounds of 76.

Senior match play action found Greg

Reynolds advancing through the first two

rounds with commanding victories. Greg

won his first match 4 & 2 and his second

match 5 & 4. Vanassen kept pace with

Reynolds by winning his first two matches

but Longeway would be defeated in his first

match by Jerry Blake 2 & 1.

Super Senior action found defending

champion Claude Johnson advancing to the

next round with a 3 & 1 victory. The two

medalist McQuarrie and Thrasher both

advanced to the next round as well.

In the quarter final match Mike Fedewa

ended Greg Reynolds bid to defend his title.

Ray Emsley, a longstanding Publinx mem-

ber, won his third match to advance into the

semifinal match against Mark Christenson,

while Dave Sweeney another Publinx mem-

ber won his third match to take on Mike

Fedewa.

In the super seniors, John F. O’Donovan

ended Claude Johnson’s repeat bid and will

face John Lindholm in the semi-final match.

Tim Redmond and John French advanced to

join O’Donovan and Lindholm.

Ray Emsley and Mike Fedewa made their

way through the semi final match to face

each other for the championship, as did

Lindholm and Redmond in the super senior

division.

In the final match, rain was probably the

toughest opponent for all the players but Ray

Emsley was focused and led the entire

match, capturing the Senior Division Title

with a 4 & 3 victory over Mike Fedewa.

In the super senior division, John

Lindholm got off to a fast start and a sizeable

lead before Tim Redmond started making

his move. Tim was able to get back to one

down after 16 holes but John won the 17th

hole to win the super seniors title 2 & 1.

Congratulations Ray and John!
