The Gaylord Golf Mecca, one of the pre-mier summer golf destinations in the countrylocated in northern Michigan, has hostednearly 4 million golfers over the past 26years according to the Gaylord Conventionand Visitors Bureau.

Golf is the big draw in America’s SummerGolf Mecca, which embraces 17 courseswith four resorts and 21 hotel properties forStay and Play packages. It’s all anchored byGaylord, a lumber town from the late 19th

century known as the Alpine Village, a nodto the Otsego Club that started as HiddenValley with Swiss-style buildings and arestaurant with a spectacular view of theSturgeon River Valley.

When Michigan golf began booming inthe 1980s, Gaylord was in the perfect loca-tion on Interstate 75, an easy drive from thepopulous southern part of the state plusOhio, Indiana and Illinois. The question was

how to spread the news to market the regionas a golf destination.

A group of local owners led by OtsegoClub’s Keith Gornick came together with

Paul Beachnau, a Michigan State Universitygraduate who was hired to oversee theTourism Bureau, and take a page fromMyrtle Beach, SC, the most successful golfmarketing program in the country. Gaylord, then with seven courses, began setting up a

Stay and Play hotel and golf packaging pro-gram. That was 1987.

The courses over the years have beendesigned by the best. Robert Trent Jones Sr.started it all with his course at Treetops.Jones gave Sylvan Ski Resort owner HarryMelling the name that captures northernMichigan golf. “Treetops” Jones said whenhe looked out from the tee site of his par-3sixth hole and saw nothing but green treetops as far as the eye could see. Mellingrenamed the resort Treetops and named thecourse the Jones Masterpiece.

Other leading course designers includeRees Jones, Tom Fazio, Rick Smith, TomDoak, Gary Koch and partner Rick Robins,Don Childs, Al Watrous, Jerry Matthews,Michigan’s most prolific designer, and the

oldest course, the Classic at the Otsego Clubwas designed by William Diddel. There arewide fairways, drop shots galore and viewsthat stretch to the horizon.

Golf Channel launched its popular “BigBreak” series in Gaylord and ESPN’s “Par 3Shootout” at Treetops both helped spread theMecca name across America. Treetops headprofessional Rick Smith, nationally knowninstructor to PGA Tour players and neverwithout an idea, helped develop both the BigBreak and Par-3 Shootout on Threetops, theresort’s award winning short coursedesigned by Smith.

The Shootout featured superstars PhilMickelson, Fred Couples and Jack Nicklausover the years and scored its biggest ESPNnational replays when Lee Trevino aced theseventh hole in 2007. It’s regarded the rich-est payday ever for a single shot, $1 million.

place. Randy Lewis and Evan Bowser both shot 80 followed byGates Muller with 82.

Second Round Qualifying: At the end of the second and final roundof qualifying the leader board might suggest this was The WorldAmateur rather than the US Amateur as the top five finishers werefrom other countries. Nick Hardy the first round leader took a fewstep back wards and tied for sixth with a score of 138.

Brady Watt (Australia) and Neil Raymond (England) shared the tophonors and would be Co-Medalist with scores of 134. Three playerstied for third, Justin Shin (Canada), Matthew Fitzpatrick (England)and Oliver Goss (Australia) firing rounds of 137.

The Michigan connection had a great experience but failed to quali-fy for match play competition. Andrew Walker the young sensationfrom Battle Creek turned in the best finish shooting 153, followed byRandy Lewis at 158, Evan Bowser 160 and Gates Muller at 167.

First Round Match Play: The first round of match play was com-pleted with all four top seeds Neil Raymond, Brady Watt, OliverGoss and Justin Shin winning their first match. Raymond and Gosshad to survive close matches both winning 1up.

Second Round Match Play: The field of 32 had fourteen interna-tional players. Canada, Australia and England each had four playersrepresenting their countries and looking to take the trophy home withthem.

When the dust settled in the second round Raymond, Watt and Gosswon their matches leaving three of the top four players in contention.

Third Round Match Play: The field of sixteen continued at an evensplit between international and US players with eight apiece.Raymond, Watt and Goss continued their march towards the finalsby chalking up another win in their matches.

Fourth Round Match Play: The quarter final field of eight foundthe internationals taking the lead with five players remaining and set-ting up the possibility of two Australians facing each other in thesemifinals and two Englanders facing each other in the other semifinal match.

Matt Fitzpatrick from England marked his spot in the semifinals bydefeating Adam Ball from Virginia 4&3 but Corey Conners fromCanada (40th seed) made sure there wouldn’t be two Englishmendueling each other in the semifinals by beating the number one seedNeil Raymond quite handily 5&3. Both Watt and Goss won theirmatch to make it to the semi-finals.

Fifth Round Match Play: In the semi-finals the two Australiansfaced each other where Goss defeated Watt 2up to punch his ticket tothe final round to face Fitzpatrick who defeated Conner’s 2&1.

Final Match: In the final match the first eighteen holes was verycompetitive with Fitzpatrick holding a 1up lead. Matt is trying to bethe first Englishmen to win the Amateur since 1911, while Goss isattempting to be the third Australian to ever win a amateur. As finaleighteen holes continued Fitzpatrick slowly took control and eventu-ally won the title with a 4&3 victory.

Early this month Matt had also qualified for “The OpenChampionship” where he made the cut and was the low amateur forthe tournament.
