October 2004 The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Michigan Agricultural Statistics proudly present the results of the 2003 Michigan Fruit Inventory. This bulletin represents a cooperative effort between the private and public sectors to provide data critical to the planning process for Michigan’s agricultural industries. This is the thirteenth report to be published under the Michigan Rotational Survey program, which is funded by the Michigan legislature, administered by the Michigan Department of Agriculture, and conducted by Michigan Agricultural Statistics. The first fruit inventory under this program was conducted in 1991, followed by a vegetable survey in 1992, and a nursery and Christmas tree survey in 1993. The surveys have continued on a rotational basis, with a turfgrass survey being added to the rotation in 2002. Michigan fruit growers should be lauded for their cooperation and assistance in voluntarily providing the data that made this report possible. We also extend thanks to Michigan-grown fruit processors, other industry officials, Michigan State University Extension, and the data collectors of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture, who helped with the data collection and verification process. We look forward to the continued successful relationship of our two organizations, as we work together for the benefit of Michigan agriculture. If you have any questions regarding this publication, or suggested improvements, please contact the Michigan Agricultural Statistics at (800) 453-7501. Sincerely, Dan Wyant David D. All FruitThere were 125,860 acres of fruit on commercial operations at

the end of 2003. That compares with 128,810 acres at the end of2000. A decline in apple acres from 2000 to 2003 was partiallyoffset by increases in grape, tart cherry, and blueberry acres.

There were 2,245 commercial fruit farms at the end of 2003.A commercial fruit farm was defined as having at least one acre ofany tree fruit or grapes or one half acre of any berry.

The geographic concentration of fruit varied substantially. Thetop five apple counties accounted for 59 percent of the total acres. The comparable figures for tart cherries and blueberries were 78percent and 96 percent, respectively. The counties with the mostacres of fruit, in order, were VanBuren, Berrien, Leelanau, Oceana, and Kent. They contained 60 percent of the acres of fruit inMichigan.

MICHIGAN FRUIT INVENTORY 2003-2004 SURVEY METHODS 45

Survey MethodsThe list sampling frame maintained by Michigan Agricultural

Statistics was the primary source of names of commercial fruitfarms. Commercial meant any operation with at least one acre ofany tree fruit or one half acre of any berry. Data were collected forevery qualifying fruit operation.

Questionnaires and cover letters were mailed to fruit farms onthe list frame in October 2003. Growers who responded to the 2000Fruit Inventory were also sent a printout of their responses to thatinventory. Data collection continued until the spring of 2004.

The apple section of the survey instrument is shown at the endof this section. Farmers were asked to complete, by block (vineyardor plantation), the block name or number, the county, township andsection where that block was located, variety, rootstock, irrigationtype, year of planting, trees, acres and spacing for each variety inthe block. Each line within a block represents a different variety, rootstock, year planted or plant spacing.

These detailed data were obtained for 86 percent of the farms.Twenty-five percent were returned by mail, 34 percent werecompleted by telephone, and 27 percent were done by personalinterview. Ten percent refused to do the inventory, and four percentcould not be contacted. Estimates of total acres of each fruit weremade from various sources for the farms for which detailed blockrecords were not available.

The completion rates of the detailed data varied by region andby fruit type. They were calculated by dividing the total acres withcomplete block data by those acres summed with estimated acresfor refusals and inaccessibles. These rates are shown as percentagesin the accompanying table. Inverses of those completion rates wereused to expand detailed data to total acreage totals by fruit anddistrict. The higher the completion rate for a district and fruit, themore accurate are the detailed data shown in the two-way andthree-way tables of this bulletin.

46 SURVEY METHODS MICHIGAN FRUIT INVENTORY 2003-2004

Michigan Fruit Counties, 2003

Michigan is one of the nation’s major fruitproducing states, largely because of Lake Michigan’smoderating influence on the weather of western areasof the state. Cold air passing over the unfrozen lake inthe winter is warmed, while hot air passing over in thesummer is cooled. This “lake effect” also helps delayfruit tree bloom in the spring, which lessens thepossibility of freeze damage. In addition, the dry arcticwinter air picks up substantial amounts of moisture asit moves over the unfrozen lake, which is deposited as“lake effect” snow, providing moisture for the fruittrees as well as insulating their root systems.
