• This is a picture of our stairs.• They are covered by the roof, so when it rains,

only half of the stairs get wet, so there’s only little rain. The temperature here was around 16°c.

• This is at the back of the house. The bushes are covered by lots of trees, there is more rain here than at the other side, because it is more open. The temperature is about the same at the other side and there is a bit of wind at this side.

I got two plastic cups and put one in the middle of my garden where there is nothing shading it and then I got the other cup and put it where it was shaded and left it over night when it was raining and when I went outside I picked up the cups and I took them inside and I measured the water from the cup and it turns out that the one in the shade had the most rain in it

I got a protractor and some string and a cotton wool ball I tied the string round the cotton wool and tied the string on to the protractor and I stood in a shaded area with it and measured the wind then I stood in a sunny place and measured what the wind was and it turned out that there was more wind in the sunny spot then in the shaded spot

An experiment by Muhammed!• Prediction: • Microclimate: The sheltered area under my carport was going to be cooler,

less rain, more shaded and less windy. • Normal Climate: The exposed area was in the middle of my garden. I

thought it was going to be hotter, more rain, sunny and windier • Method:• Just before sunset I went out into the garden and first placed a thermometer

under the carport and in the exposed part of the garden. Then I checked the wind speed with a home made anemometer (made from a protractor, string of wool and a ball). After 5mins I got the following results:

• Conclusion:• I was incorrect about the temperature being warmer in the normal

climate and cooler in the microclimate. But I was correct about there being more wind in the normal climate. It didn’t rain at all in either climate.

ExperimentI chose three places in our garden to test for microclimates. The first place is the lawn where my brother and I play football. This is quite open and is the ‘normal’ area. I also chose one location either side of our house. At the front, there is a narrow walled courtyard. At the back, there is a long strip of grass behind the house.

The Lawn

The lawn is quite wide open and exposed. It should be a good place to get an idea of what ‘normal’ temperatures, wind speeds and rainfall are.

The Courtyard

The courtyard has a wall all around it so it should be more sheltered from wind. It might be a bit hotter than the lawn because the walls and stone floors act as a sun trap.

The Back Garden

The back garden is open at each end so it might be a bit more windy than the courtyard, but maybe not as windy as the main lawn. It has shade for more of the day so it might be cooler.

WindMy wind speed meter wasn’t very accurate. There isn’t much wind where we live except it gets blustery when it’s about to rain. I couldn’t really tell much difference, thought the lawn did seem windier.

Rain

We haven’t had all that much rain in the last few days. I used three glasses to measure the rain and they all had about the same in them.

Summary

It was a bit hard to tell if there are microclimates in our garden. The temperature in the courtyard was definitely hotter than the rest of the garden, but I couldn’t really tell much difference in wind or rainfall. Maybe I need to keep trying or choose other places.

Microclimate 1, 2 , 3…Conclusion

The wall and fence seemed to affect the amount of water I collected and I had less wind speed and it was warmer by the house wall.The middle of the garden was colder and wetter and windy.

I can see different plants , insects prefer different areas. The warmer attracts more insects like woodlice, ants and spiders make their web ‘s semi –sheltered but higher up to catch the wind.

Under the leaves by the outer fence was full of bugs but in the centre of the garden, I could only see worms under the soil.
