MICROFIBER MOPSMajor Cleaning Microfiber mops have been shown to pick up more dust and dirt than conventional mops. The environmental staff at the University of California Davis Medical Center performed a demonstration of this: First, they cleaned an area with a conventional mop and then re-cleaned with a microfiber mop. This was done several times, and in each case the microfiber mop captured additional dust and dirt. Then the same test was done in reverse order. However, the conventional mop was not able to capture additional dust and dirt beyond the capabilities of the microfiber mop.1

MICROFIBER CLEANING CLOTHSMajor Cleaning Effective cleaning involves two things: 1. Removing soil so that the disinfectant can reach the surface, and

2. Transferring an adequate amount of chemical to the surface and leaving it there for the required kill time.

Recent studies show that microfiber is more effective than other traditional cleaning cloths at—» Removing soil from the surface. Reusable and disposable microfiber cloths were

shown to be more effective at reducing bacteria from a test soil than cotton/poly blend, 100 percent cotton, blue O.R. towel, and polypropylene materials.2

» Transferring the chemical to the surface. Because of its positive charge, microfiber naturally doesn’t attract the positively charged active ingredients in disinfectants. That’s why microfiber was recently shown to be more efficient at transferring disinfectant to a surface than the traditional materials mentioned above, which have a negative charge.

For routine cleaning and disinfection of noncritical surfaces, such as floors, bedrails, tray tables and blood-pressure cuffs.Efficacy. Bactericidal, virucidal (against enveloped viruses) and fungicidal.Safety. Benzalkonium chloride, a quaternary ammonium compound, has caused some documented cases occupational asthma.

HypochloriteUses. Mostly for disinfecting surfaces in bathrooms and where food is prepared; also used for blood spills, and surfaces contaminated with hepatitis, HIV and C. difficile.Efficacy. Bactericidal, virucidal, fungicidal, sporicidal and mycobactericidal.Safety. Sodium hypochlorite (bleach) may cause skin and eye irritation, as well as burns to the pharynx, esophagus and stomach; also can discolor fabrics and corrode metals.

Accelerated Hydrogen PeroxideUses. The level of disinfection is relative to its concentration, with over 2% used for high-level disinfection.Efficacy. Bactericidal, virucidal, fungicidal, sporicidal and mycobactericidal.Safety. Considered safe for EVS staff, registered at the lowest EPA toxicity category (IV), surface compatible, noncorrosive and unaffected by organic material.

Residual product can irritate tissue and cause skin depigmentation; can cause hyperbilirubinemia in infants when not prepared properly.
