General characteristics Micronet is a Microprocessor control panel designed to govern the operation of indoor units installed as part of the ERGO system, Large or Small version. The controllable units include éstro fan coil units, CSW recess-mounted fan coil units, UTN thermal ventilating units and AREO single-phase fan heaters. The LARGE solution provides for all controllers (up to 126) to be connected to the supervisor software via an RS485 connection bus with Modbus protocol integrated in each controller. The chiller (or heat pump) may also be connected to the supervision system and the software program analyses system data to adapt operation to the actual conditions.

The Small solution sets up a Master-Slave system (up to 126 slave terminals), in which one of the Microprocessor controllers plays the role of Master and controls all of the other slave elements. In this case as well the connection is made via an RS485 bus, consisting of a simple shielded 2-conductor cable.

The standard Micronet controller is designed for wall mounting. A kit for installation on ESTRO fan coil units is available on request.

Page 4: MICRONET - GALLETTIord.galletti.com/imagesdb/famiglie/pdf/fc66001435.pdf · FC66001435 – Rev.03 3 General characteristics Micronet is a Microprocessor control panel designed to

FC66001435 – Rev.03 4

In the LARGE version, the supervisor software can ascribe 4 degrees of autonomy to the MICRONET controller, depending on the level of remote control that has been assigned via the software:

o LOCAL: all functions may be accessed from the local control panel, including speed and temperature selection and setting of the cooling or heating mode. All operating parameters are in any case read by the system.

o REMOTE LEVEL A - maximum freedom: the operating mode is set via the software, but all other functions are accessible from the local control panel, including speed and temperature selection. All operating parameters are read by the system.

o REMOTE LEVEL B – some degree of freedom: the user can choose the fan speed and adjust the temperature set via the software by the amount given by “∆ T. setpoint”. The operating mode is automatically set by the supervisor program.

o REMOTE LEVEL C – locked: No function can be set from the local control panel, which is completely governed by the software. In the SMALL network version, the control panel set as Master (identified by the Address 127), send to all the slaves the following information: operating mode (cooling or heating) ambient temperature set point

Each of the slaves, maintains the management of the fan speed and the ambient temperature regulation is permitted with a delta of ± 2°C around the set point value sent by the master. The yellow led (if on) indicates the presence of the communication over the serial line (the Master is identified by the flashing yellow light).

Main functions and features: • Regulation of air temperature via automatic fan speed adjustment,

• Regulation of air temperature via fan on-off control (fan runs at a fixed speed),

• Timing (not available for wall-mounted model)

• Control of On-Off valves for two or four-pipe systems

• Control of heating element supplementing or replacing the heating circuit, with delayed fan shutdown

• Cooling/Heating changeover in the following modes: ♦ local manual switching ♦ automatic switching according to water temperature

Additional features include: • external auxiliary contacts (e.g.; window contact, remote ON/OFF, occupancy sensor etc.) which may enable

or disable unit operation (contacts energised at 230V =OFF; contacts open=ON) • contacts for enabling the economy mode (only for the “large” solution: energised at 230V=economy; contacts

open= normal); • water temperature sensor • air temperature sensor. The control panel is composed of: • Function selector for switching the fan coil unit on and off, choosing the type of operation (automatic or with

fixed speed) and activating the heating element. • Cooling / Heating button • LEDs indicating the current operating mode; • Thermostat for regulating the room temperature.

Function selector The function selector enables the user to select the desired function and fan speed of the unit. Specifically, the following options are available:

OFF: to shut down the unit AUTO: automatic selection of fan speed according to the difference between the temperature setpoint and the actual room temperature measured by the sensor. Heating element: it turns on the heating element installed in the unit (where present) only when the temperature of the water inside the coil falls below 39 °C. The operation of the controller in the above-described modes is illustrated in the

appended diagrams. Fan control in AUTO mode (heating and cooling)

In operation with a constant fan speed (selector on V1, V2 or V3) the ON / OFF hysteresis of the fan is ±0.5 °C around the setpoint.

Temperature scales The serigraphic pattern around the thermostat selector represents a temperature scale which ranges from a minimum to comfort to maximum setting. Depending on the operating mode - cooling or heating - the scale will correspond to different temperatures as shown in figure 2.

Temperature scales Cooling Mode

Heating Mode

Important: when the “Automatic Cooling/Heating changeover according to air temperature” function is enabled, the thermostat temperature scale will correspond to the values shown in figure 3.

Temperature scales for “Automatic Cooling/Heating changeover according to air temperature”

LED indications. The LEDs may light up in various combinations indicating different operations and statuses of the controller:

o YELLOW LED ON: the MICRONET control panel is connected to the MODBUS network. o YELLOW LED FLASHING: for the SMALL solution only, it indicates that the control panel is the network

MASTER. o BLUE LED ON: the unit is currently set in the cooling mode; the fan coil unit may actually be running or

standing by for a call from the thermostat. o RED LED ON: the unit is currently set in the heating mode; the fan coil unit may actually be running or

standing by for a call from the thermostat.. o BLUE AND RED LEDS ON: fan coil unit operation is not enabled: the water temperature permits neither

heating nor cooling of the air; or the air temperature is within the neutral zone o DOUBLE FLASH OF BLUE LED: call from the thermostat to start up the fan coil unit in the cooling

mode. o DOUBLE FLASH OF RED LED: call from the thermostat to start up the fan coil unit in the heating mode.

Note: Identifying the operating mode when the unit is disabled (Blue and Red LEDs on) When the blue and red LEDs are both lit (operation not enabled, see paragraph above), to determine which operating mode has been set you must turn the thermostat control until one of the two LEDs starts flashing and then remains steadily lit. That LED will indicate the active mode (blue = cooling; red = heating). Once you have identified the operating mode, set the thermostat back in the desired position.

Instructions for installing Micronet Important: The Micronet controller has been designed for fan coil units belonging to the éstro series, CH recess-mounted fan coil units, UTN terminal units and AREO single-phase fan heaters; should you wish to use it to control other types of units, you must make sure that the operating limits are complied with (see relevant section herein). The MICRONET controller incorporates 2 sets of dipswitches for configuring the control functions and assigning the controller a network address. FUNCTION DIPSWITCHES Group of 8 dipswitches to be configured as follows: The dipswitches from 1 to 7 may be used to configure the controller functions as illustrated in the tables in the “Function Configuration” section. The position of dipswitch 8 identifies the type of installation of the control panel (ON = wall-mounted, 0FF = on unit). In practical terms, it activates the timing function (only for installation directly on Estro fan coil units) or a function for correcting the reading of the ambient temperature sensor (wall installation). The standard MICRONET controller is designed for wall mounting and is therefore equipped with an incorporated air temperature sensor and non-wired water temperature sensor. If the controller is to be installed on an ESTRO fan coil unit, the incorporated air temperature sensor will have to be replaced with a sensor for on-board installation, provided with an extension cord (included in the on-board installation kit, code EYKMB) “ADDRESS” DIPSWITCHES Group of 7 dipswitches whose configuration serves to ascribe a network address to the controller, based on the conversion table included in the “Installation booklet” (code FC67001412), which must be completely filled in to facilitate the setup procedures for the ERGO supervisor software. WARNING The address 0 (all dipswitches OFF) is not allowed!! WARNING The address 127 (all dipswitches ON) identifies the MASTER in the SMALL network and is thus reserved for this purpose. No terminal in the LARGE network may be configured with the address 127!! IMPORTANT Make sure to note down the configuration of the function and address dipswitches on the sticker on the back of the controller. Also specify the room where the controller will be installed. Important: For each of the terminals connected to the supervision network it is necessary fill out the table included in the installation booklet, specifying the address of the terminal itself, where it is located, the configuration of the dipswitches defining the network address, the model of the terminal unit installed and the configuration of the dipswitches that define the functions (2 or 4 pipes, heating element, valves, etc...).

Setting the function dipswitches: 1. Take off the controller cover by removing the screw at the bottom. Important: to make subsequent assembly easier, be careful not to change the position of the two rotary controls (function selector and thermostat) and their respective potentiometers on the electronic card. 2. Arrange the dipswitches in the sequence corresponding to one of the configurations described in this manual. Fig.5 Note: if the chosen configuration does not provide for the presence of heating elements and the user turns the function selector to the heating element symbol, the fan coil unit will continue to operate in the “auto” mode, regulating air temperature by means of the fan.

Description of functions

Room thermostat with control over air temperature: Fan speed is automatically adjusted based on the difference between the temperature set on the thermostat and the actual room temperature. This function is turned on by setting the speed selector on “Auto”. In the other positions the fan will simply be switched on and off.

Room thermostat with control over ON OFF valve for two-pipe systems Fan speed is automatically adjusted based on the difference between the temperature set on the thermostat and the actual room temperature. This function is turned on by setting the speed selector on “Auto”. In the other positions the fan will simply be switched on and off. After the set temperature has been reached, the water valve will close. In the cooling mode, the fan will continue running at minimum speed even after the valve has closed. In the heating mode the fan will stop at the same time as the valve closes.

Room thermostat with control over ON OFF valves for four-pipe systems Fan speed is automatically adjusted based on the difference between the temperature set on the thermostat and the actual room temperature. This function is turned on by setting the speed selector on “Auto”. In the other positions the fan will simply be switched on and off. After the set temperature has been reached, the water valve will close. In the cooling mode, the fan will continue running at minimum speed even after the cooling circuit valve has closed. In the heating mode the fan will stop at the same time as the heating circuit valve closes.

Local manual Cooling/Heating changeover Manual setting of the microprocessor on the desired function. The selection is made by pressing the mode button. The blue LED (cooling) or red LED (heating) will light up to indicate which mode has been selected.

Automatic Cooling/Heating changeover according to water temperature The microprocessor automatically selects the cooling or heating function based on the water temperature, according to the following logic: Water temperature < 17°C: unit set in cooling mode Water temperature > 39°C: unit set in heating mode Water temperature between 17°C and 39°C: operation disabled Note: the water temperature sensor is an optional accessory for the wall-mounted version of Micronet. For directions on installing the water temperature sensor, see figures 14 to 20 in this manual.

Page 12: MICRONET - GALLETTIord.galletti.com/imagesdb/famiglie/pdf/fc66001435.pdf · FC66001435 – Rev.03 3 General characteristics Micronet is a Microprocessor control panel designed to

FC66001435 – Rev.03 12

Automatic Cooling/Heating changeover according to air temperature

The microprocessor automatically selects the cooling or heating function based on where the actual air temperature falls in relation to a neutral temperature interval (neutral zone) centred around the value set on the thermostat. Note: when this function is enabled, the thermostat temperature scale will refer to the values shown in figure 3, both in the cooling and heating modes.

Setting the neutral zone The neutral zone is a parameter tied to the function: “Automatic Cooling/Heating changeover according to air temperature”. The neutral zone is an interval of temperature whose midpoint is the local temperature setpoint: when the air temperature in the room rises above the upper limit of the neutral zone, the cooling mode is selected; when the air temperature in the room falls below the lower limit of the neutral zone, the heating mode is selected. The figure below provides an example where: Neutral zone = 5°C Room temperature setpoint = 21°C: when the temperature exceeds 23.5°C the cooling mode is enabled; when the temperature falls below 18.5°C the heating mode is enabled.

Fig. 4 The Micronet allows you to select a neutral zone of 2°C or 5°C to obtain greater or lesser precision, respectively, of air temperature control.

FC66001435 – Rev.03 13

Timing

Available only for Micronet panels installed directly on fan coil units, this function starts up the fan at regular intervals (every 10 min.) and runs it at medium speed for 2 min. once the temperature inside the room has reached the level set on the thermostat. It guarantees constant monitoring of the ambient air temperature; the function is active only in summertime and only if enabled by the water temperature sensor. A timed cycle is carried out also when the controller is powered (when started up for the first time or when the power supply is restored after being interrupted). Note: While the timing function is active, the thermostat and function selector will be disabled. The timing function is available only for valveless units and only during summertime operation. The timing function is not available for wall-mounted Micronet controllers.

Control of heating element

Thermostat control of a heating element, which may be installed to supplement or replace hot water heating. When the function selector is set on and the heating element is working, the fan will run constantly at medium speed. Moreover, for safety reasons, there will always be a 2-min. delay in the fan stop after the heating element goes off, whether this occurs because the desired air temperature has been reached or the heating element has been switched off manually via the function selector. Note: while the heating element is on, the fan will run only at medium speed. On / off according to water temperature

According to the water temperature read by a specific sensor, the microprocessor will enable fan coil unit operation according to the following logic: Water temperature < 17°C: unit operation enabled in cooling mode Water temperature > 37°C: unit operation enabled in heating mode In configurations including an electric heating element, the same sensor will enable operation of the latter according to the following logic: Water temperature < 39°C: enable operation of the additional electric heating element (Operation will be enabled only if the function selector is set on ) For directions on how to install the water temperature sensor, see figures 16 to 20 in this manual.

Instructions for installing Micronet Connection to the RS485 communication network The communication network relies on a simple shielded 2-conductor cable, directly connected to the RS485 serial ports of the controllers (terminals A, B and GND). "Use AWG24 cable (diameter 0,5mm) to realize the network"

WARNING: To avoid any operation problems, the cables of the communication bus (RS485) and the cables of the of the probes cannot be installed next to power cables (230V);

In the case of the ERGO “LARGE” solution the network terminates on the RS232-RS485 converter, which must be connected to the serial port of the personal computer in which the ERGO supervision software resides. The network is powered by the converter itself. The communication network must have the following general structure: Pull-up, pull-down and termination resistors are already present inside each MICRONET controller and may be activated via the jumpers provided. The certainty of logic levels is obtained with the pull-up and pull-down resistors. These resistors are also present in the RS232 – RS485 serial converter supplied with the software. In this case only the termination resistor, on the last Micronet in the network, needs to be activated by means of J5

If the serial converter is not used (because a serial converter other the one supplied is already present or because the SMALL solution is being implemented), it is also necessary to activate resistors J3, J4 and J5 (on the first controller) as well as the termination resistor (J5) on the controller farthest from the Master or from the PC in which the serial converter is installed.

FC66001435 – Rev.03 21

Briefly, the situation is as follows: “LARGE” Solution (RS232-RS485 or USB-RS485 converter supplied with the software) Activate only the termination resistor on the last controller in the network (Jumper J5) Note: “LARGE” Solution (serial converter without pull-up/pull-down and termination resistors) Activate the pull-up/pull-down and termination resistors (jumpers J3, J4 and J5) on the controller near the converter and, as in the previous case, only the termination resistor on the last controller in the network (Jumper J5) “SMALL” Solution Activate the pull-up/pull-down and termination resistors (jumpers J3, J4 and J5) on the master controllers and, as in the previous case, only the termination resistor on the last controller in the network (Jumper J5) The network connection scheme entails a simple parallel connection, which must:

(1) Comply with the polarity of the connection: indicated with A(-) and B(+) (2) Avoid ground loops (ground shield at one end only)

Installation on the support and fan coil unit The Micronet controller can be installed on either side of the fan coil unit using a support and covering frame thanks to an on-board installation kit (code EYKMB) complete with: Remote air temperature sensor (cable length 1.5 m) Sensor holder Support for installation on the fan coil unit Covering frames for L/U or A version Replace the SA air temperature sensor incorporated in the MICRONET controller with the air temperature sensor provided in the on-board installation kit (black wire); connect to the SA terminals. Function dipswitch 8 should be positioned on OFF 1. Take off the fan coil unit cabinet after removing the four screws concealed by the flap covers at either end of

the grille (fig.6).

Fig.6 2. Remove the blank plastic tabs from one of the two slots of the support in order to be able to reach the

“fastons” of the Micronet unit to be used (Fig. 7); (the fastons will face one of the support slots, depending on whether the controller is to be fitted on the RH or LH side of the fan coil unit).

3. Thread the sensor wires through one of the two slots in the support and attach the controller to the support using the two screws provided (Fig.8). (Figure 8 shows how the controller and support should be assembled if the controller is installed on the right side of the fan coil unit: if the controller is installed on the left side of the fan coil unit, the support will have to be turned by 180°).

Fig.7 Fig.8

Important: check that all of the terminals necessary for the electrical connections provided for in the selected configuration (valve, heating element, external auxiliary contacts etc ) are accessible after the support has been mounted in place (refer to relevant wiring diagram); otherwise it will be necessary to remove the protective tabs from the base of the support.

4. Make the electrical connections according to the diagrams provided in this manual.

Self-diagnosis procedure To check the efficiency of the Micronet controller at the time of installation or in order to locate a fault, it is possible to manually actuate all of the outputs provided (fan, valves, heating element) thanks to the self-diagnosis function. To access the self-diagnosis function and carry out checks proceed as follows: 1. Position the function selector on “OFF” 2. Turn the thermostat control anticlockwise all the way to the minimum temperature: 3. Keep the Cool/Heat button pressed down for at least 5 seconds: at this point both LEDs will light up. 4. Within 5 seconds, turn the thermostat control clockwise all the way to the maximum temperature: the red LED

will go off and the blue LED will remain on to indicate that the controller has switched into the self-diagnosis mode.

Note: if you allow more than 5 seconds to elapse, you will automatically exit the self-diagnosis mode. 5. In the self-diagnosis mode, every position of the function selector corresponds to the simulation of an output,

namely:

Position Actuation Terminals AUTO Valve N-V

Minimum speed N-V1

Medium speed N-V2

Maximum speed N-V3

Electric heating element or second valve

N-RE

By moving the function selector to the various positions you can check the electronic control outputs one by one, either by observing the component involved (valve, fan, heating element) or checking for the presence of 230 V power at the corresponding terminals. Note: if you allow more than one minute to elapse without moving the function selector you will automatically exit the self-diagnosis mode. 6. Exit the self-diagnosis mode by turning the function selector to OFF.
