III. Activity Summary
Instructions: To be completed following field visit
EMW attended the Salalek 5 Primary school, and conducted WASH awareness / education activities for approximately 70 children to celebrate world water day. EMW conducted a sand filter construction exercise, which is based on a program that Engineers Without Borders use in schools in New Zealand and Australia to raise awareness about clean water. It involves the students constructing a mini water filter in a plastic bottle, the students receive pretend money to buy materials and then construct and test the filters. During the testing a group of students started singing a handwashing song that they had learnt. Some students demonstrated good handwashing techniques, and EMW explained about the importance of good hygiene, sanitation and clean water. The students really enjoyed the activity and there was a happy and excited atmosphere.EMW inspected the water systems; there are a few minor issues at the schools, EMW will work with the schools and contractors to rectify these problems.
IV. Detailed Activity Report
Instructions: To be completed following field visit
With the school teachers EMW demonstrated how to construct the filter. EMW explained that the mini sand filter the students were going to construct would only filter some sediment and turbidity, the water would need further treatment to be suitable for drinking.EMW only had time to carry out the WASH awareness / education campaign in the primary school, though EMW visited the secondary school to inspect the system. At the primary school the water supply is struggling with the demand, through discussions with the school teachers, it is thought that the

pump may not be deep enough and that the problem may be related to the lowering of the ground water. EMW contacted the pump supplier to inspect the site to observe the problem and make recommendations. At the secondary school, the only minor issues were that the taps not glued in place and the box to protect the filters has not been installed; EMW will work with the school to rectify these issues. EMW will review the cost of installing a fence around the well, solar panels, tank and filters for security.
