Annual ConferenceThe MACE Annual Conference is the flagship event of the Mid-America Chamber Executives. The conference brings together industry experts and chamber executives from across the Midwest for three days of high-level networking, educational workshops, and engaging speakers.

Membership Satisfaction SurveysMACE knows that chambers of commerce are constantly looking for ways to gauge what their members think. A MACE Membership Satisfaction Survey can help chamber executives touch base with their membership and identify their chamber’s strengths and weaknesses. The base of the survey is standardized to provide for benchmarking against the industry, but questions can be added to provide insight specific to your chamber.

NewslineThe Newsline is a weekly newsletter sent to MACE members that features stories from chambers of commerce in the five-state area. The Newsline also posts national chamber news, job openings, names in the news, MACE news, and ideas for chambers to use. Created in 2010, the Newsline has an audience of over 600 subscribers with a high readership rate.

Chamber Insight WebinarsMACE offers quarterly webinars focused on providing innovative techniques and time-tested best practices to Chamber professionals. The Chamber Insight Webinars feature presentations by industry experts and key partners in order to provide ongoing education for MACE members.

Survey IntroductionAll employers require industry comparisons in order to establish and justify appropriate salaries and benefits for their employees. Chambers of commerce are no different than other employers and require current comprehensive and specific information about compensation in their field.

Every two years, MACE conducts and presents a study of local chambers of commerce that analyzes operations, compensation, and benefits. This year, Illinois was added to the previous six-state region of Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

AcknowledgementsThe help of many individuals and organizations was required to effectively produce this survey. The entire MACE board of directors provided leadership to ensure effective implementation and distribution of the survey. The individual state executive associations provided both financial support and critical contact information on the local chambers in their states.

MethodologyIndividual state associations provided contact information for over 700 local chambers of commerce. The survey instrument, originally developed in 1990s and modified every two years since, was again modified based on input from the MACE board of directors. Questions surrounding online marketing were also added in this year’s survey.

The survey instrument, developed by Dowell Stute and Associates utilized the SurveyGizmo survey software and the survey link and instructions were sent to all chambers of commerce in the seven-state region. The survey link was also featured on the MACE website, and a number of local chambers were called by their state association and directed there.

216 completed surveys were received and reflect approximately a 31% response rate. More chambers of commerce participated in this year’s survey than ever before. The time to complete the survey averaged 17 minutes. Individual surveys were reviewed, and in many cases data was reformatted or ommitted if obviously corrupted.

ChallengesChamber executives or individuals that were delegated the responsibility of responding to the survey are not immune to self-reporting mistakes. Self-reporting mistakes are impossible to detect in many cases because the true data is unknown. Mistakes were minimized whenever possible by eliminating or modifying certain responses with glaring errors.

Comparisons to previous years’ data is complicated by both slight changes in survey design, as well as considerable changes in sampling. In 2010, Illinois chambers did not participate, and many of the smallest chambers across the region were not contacted. In 2012, all completed surveys were included along with Illinois, resulting in a different sampling than 2010. Selective same-chamber comparisons were conducted to assure general accuracy in trends. We are confident that the larger sample has resulted in greater accuracy overall.

Section II: Chief Paid Executives ...................................... Page 12

The chief paid executives section covers all aspects of chamber executives broken down by state and chamber income category. Graphical depictions of the key stats by income bracket help chamber executives to quickly compare themselves to their average peers. In-depth data highlights how the chamber industry is aging, gender breakdowns, and how long chamber executives are serving their chambers, among other things.

Section III: Chamber Income ........................................... Page 28

How does your chamber income compare to similar chambers across the MACE region? The chamber income section breaks down how much money chambers are bringing in, who is making a profit, average amounts in reserve funds, and what chambers are spending their money on.

Section IV: Membership .................................................. Page 34

Chambers exist to serve members, yet many don’t know how their membership compares to others. The membership section looks at what membership models chambers are using, average number of members in various states and income levels, how those membership numbers have changed in the last year, and membership base rates.

Income Highlights

Trend Lines• After a considerable dip in 2010, the percentage

of chambers running a profit came closer to returning to their historical percentage in 2012.

• Generally, as budgets increase, the percentage of income chambers spend on programs also increases.

• The recent economic boom in North Dakota is evidenced by their large reserve funds and income.

• All income brackets are well represented in the survey, with more larger chambers responding than in previous years.

• 40% of chambers reported are using some sort of tiered dues as their membership model, and over 15% of chambers indicated that they would be changing their membership model in the next 24 months.

• It may seem like common sense, but the data supports that smaller chambers in terms of community size have significantly better market penetration.

• 55% of chambers reported a net increase in members during 2011.

• Average membership base rates did not vary much based on state, but did vary greatly based on the size of the population served by the chamber.
