REVIVE: Devoted to Prayer

I’ve been encouraged to hear from several people regarding the message on

Sunday about being devoted to prayer. Some have said, “I can’t do much but I can

pray and I pray regularly for you and the church.” I’m blessed to know there are

many praying for me and for the church as a whole. One person told me they had

my slack (they pray a lot and help make up for my slacking in prayer). I’m thankful

for those who guard their prayer time. I heard from one who is doing some Bible

study regarding the presence of God in our lives. Nothing compares to growing in

fellowship with our Lord and Savior. Others have shared their struggles with

prayer.

I think sometimes we think we need to devote an hour to prayer immediately.

If you can discipline yourself to pray an hour a day, praise the Lord. You will not

regret the time you spend with the Lord. However, most people struggle to spend

10 minutes a day in prayer. If you struggle in having a daily prayer time I want to

encourage you to start small and grow in your prayer life. I’ve just finished read-

ing Timothy Keller’s “Prayer: Experiencing Awe and Intimacy with God.” At the

end of the book, Keller offers some suggestions for our daily prayers. I thought I

would share a simple plan for starters that is divided into 5 sections.

A Starter Plan for Daily Prayer

APPROACHING

Think of the privilege of prayer. Realize God is present. Ask Him to help you pray.

MEDITATION

Read a Scripture passage. Discern one or two truths you learn there. Choose the one that

most impresses you and write it in a sentence.

Now ask: How does this truth help me praise God?

How does it show me a sin to confess?

How does it show me something to ask God for?

WORD PRAYER

Now turn the answers to the 3 questions into a prayer – adoration, petition, and supplica-

tion.

FREE PRAYER

Pray about whatever needs are on your heart. Also spend time thanking God for the ways

you see Him working in your life and caring for you.

COMTEMPLATION

Take a moment to thank and admire God for what he has showed you today. End with a note

of praise.

I think it is extremely beneficial to connect our praying with our Bible reading,

contemplation, and meditation. It is important to take a few minutes to allow the

Holy Spirit to speak (reveal truth) from the Scriptures. I hope you will commit a

little extra time to spend in prayer and fellowship with God. You will be most

blessed. Let us pray that God will send revival to our lives and our church.

MAKING DISCIPLES…

Question: How do we know there is a God

Answer: The light of nature in man, and the works of God, plainly declare that there is a God; but His Word and Spirit only, do effectually reveal Him unto us for salvation. Scripture: Romans 1:1:18-20; Psalm 19:1-2; 2 Timothy 3:15; 1 Corinthians 1:21-24; 2:9-10; Matthew 11:27. Comment: The question distinguishes two kings of knowledge: one is natural and comes from conscience (“the light of nature in man”) and from the works of God in nature; the other in spiritual or saving, and comes from the recognition of the true value of God and the beauty of His character. Natural knowledge is possessed by all people and thus makes all people accountable to honor and thank God. Spiritual knowledge is possessed only by those whose natural blindness has been overcome by the Spirit of God (1 Corinthians 2:14-16).
