thegamesstorytakesplacebetweentheeventsofTheHobbitandtheLordOfTheRingstrilogy,

theresplentyofopportunitiesforintelligentlyplacedcameosthroughout.Consideringtheplayer

characterinShadowOfMordorisabrandnewcharacter,ahalfhumanhalfwraithRangerbythe

nameofTalion,thedevelopershavecarteblanchewiththestoryandanyoftheconnectionsthey

wanttomaketotheexistingcanon.WeveseenglimpsesofGollumstalkingMordorsruinsalready

andother

characters

like

Galadriel

have

already

been

announced

for

inclusion,

but

what

of

the

rest

ofMiddleEarth?Wecountdowntenmorecameoswedreallylovetoseeandourideasastohow

theywouldcomeabout.

CriminallyleftoutofthePeterJacksonmovies,TomBombadilisanancientprotectoroftheforests

thathadsupposedlybeenaroundsincethedawnoftime.Althoughwedoubthewouldventure

intoMordorhimself,itwouldbeinterestingifBombadilweretohaveencounteredTalionbefore.

Perhapsaflashbackorinterludeofsomekind?Oneoftheleadmysteriesalreadybeingdebated

byLOTRfansistheidentityofthewraithwhogaveTalionhispowersinthefirstplace.Bombadils

immortalitywouldmake him a good font of knowledge about Talions situation and he could

perhapsoffercluesastoTalionsuniquenature.NomatterhowMonolithusehim,itwouldbenice

forBombadil to finallygetsomesortof recognitionoutsideof thebooksandhescertainlyan

interestingenoughcharactertograbanynewcomersattention.

9. The Blue Wizards

WhenBilbo

questions

Gandalf

as

to

just

how

many

wizards

that

are,

Gandalf

mentions

himself,

SarumanandRadagastandalsotwoblueunnamedwizardswithnoknownorigin.Tolkiennever

wrotetheminanystoriesandtheywereneverreallymentionedagain.Inotherwords,theycould

beperfectlyplacedintotheeventsofShadowOfMordorwithoutmessingaroundwiththeexisting

canonintheslightest.TheycouldperhapsguideTaliononhisquest,maybeashelearnstousehis

newlydevelopedwraithpowers.Theycouldalsoserveasan interestingbossfight.WithTalion

beinghalfWraith,acaseofmistakenidentitycouldleadtoatwoononebattlebeforethingsare

clearedupandTaliongetsonhiswaytoslaughteringmoreorcs.Ofcourse,thingsdonthaveto

endamenablyeither.WhatifTalionendedupkillingthebluewizardsafterhelosescontrol?We

canseeTaliongrapplingwithhishalfwraithnatureasamajorthemeintheplotandthemoment

heispushedovertheedgecouldbethemomenthemurdersthesetwoinablindfury.

8. Beorn The Skinchanger

ThelastoftheskinchangersplaysafairlyimportantroleintheHobbitwhenhesheltersBilboand

hisgroupandsendsthemoffintherightdirection,andcontinuestoplayarolemostimportantly

laterintheBattleofFiveArmies.HistalecomestoanendattheendofTheHobbitandfanshave

alwayspresumedthathediedatsomepointbeforetheWaroftheRingandtheeventsoftheLord

OfTheRingstrilogy.ThatmakesShadowOfMordorsplaceinthetimelineperfecttoincludewhat

shouldbe

his

suitably

tragic

death.

Talion

is

alittle

darker

than

your

classic

Lord

Of

The

Rings

characterandBoernissimilarlywrittenassuch.Comparisonsbetweenthetwoareeasytomake

andhavingBoernjoinTalionbrieflyonhisquestforvengeancebeforebeingkilledoffinorderto

sellthethreatofanyofthegamesmajorantagonistswouldbeanicetouch.

7. The Witch King Of Angmar

Duringthetimeperiodinwhichthegameisset,theWitchKingandtherestoftheNazgularestill

lickingtheirwounds intheshadowsfrombeingtrouncedbythe lastallianceofMenandElves.

Consideringthegamestitle,thoseveryshadowsareclearlythesettingandanencounterwiththe

leaderoftheNazgulwouldnotgoamiss.ObviouslycanonsaysTalionwillnotkilltheWitchKing

here (nor canheconsidering the nomanwillharmhimprophecy)but itwouldmake foran

eventfulbossfight.TheWitchKingsinclusionherecouldshedsomelightonTalionsownnature

andthebigmysterysurroundingtheidentityofthewraithwhogiveshimhispowers.

6. Bard The Bowman

ThereluctantherofromTheHobbit,theendofthattaleleftBardwithasizableamountofgold

withwhichtorebuildhisbattlescarredhomeofLaketownbutTolkienlorehasitthattheMaster

ofEsgaroth

absconds

with

alarge

amount

of

it

and

Bard

goes

after

him.

What

ifthe

Master

tried

tohidefromBardintheoneplacehedidntthinkBardwouldfollowhim?Itwouldbecoolifat

somepointinthegame,TalionbumpedintoBardandtheyhelpedoneanotherwiththeiraims.

PerhapsBardofferstooffatargetforTalion inreturnforTalionhelpinghimtrackdownhis lost

loot.TheprecisepointbetweenTheHobbitandLordOfTheRingsinwhichthisgametakesplace

hasntbeenspecifiedsoBardmaybetoooldforthistohappen,butifShadowsOfMordoroffers

theopportunitytodetailthisuntoldstorythenitshould.

Anotheropportunity

that

would

make

anice

change

from

dicing

countless

orcs,

we

cantimaginethehardlineelfwarriorLegolasisatthispointinthetimelinewouldappreciatethe

halfhumanhalfWraithTalionjustonbasicprinciple.ItdbeeasytowriteinareasonforLegolas

beingthere,itsclearfromtheeventsofTheHobbitonwardsthattheElvessensesomethingwrong,

thatSauronisslowlyreturning.Legolascouldeasilybetheleaderofanelvishscoutingpartysent

tocheckexactlywhatsgoingdowninMordor.Hiswholepartycouldbeattackedandslaughtered

byanyofthegamesantagonistsleavingLegolasaloneandverydefensive.CueTalionsentryand

Legolasunderstandablehostilityatthismanwhoseemsmorelikeawraith.Thetwowouldhave

tocometosomesortofunderstandingbytheendofthefight,butitwouldbeanicenodtothe

largercanon

and

help

frame

the

events

within

it.

4. Radagast The Brown

PlayedbythebrilliantSeventhDoctorSylvesterMcCoyinthefilmadaptation,Radagastisthefirst

characterinMiddleEarthwhoseemstoknowthatsomethingisupwithdarkforcesreturningand

thenaturalorderof thingsbeingmoreaskew than theyshouldbe.Weknow that theMordor

showninthegameisnotyetentirelythesmoulderingruinthatweseelaterinthemaintrilogyso

itsobviousthatsomethinggoesseverelywrongthere.Radagast,beingawizardmoreattunedwith

nature,couldbe lookingintoexactlywhyMordorisslowlybeingcorruptedoncemorewhenhe

bumpsintoTalion.Wedontimagineafighthere,Radagastseemssomewhatapacifist,butshould

thegameincludecollectibles(andbeinganopenworldgame,werecountingonthat)Radagast

wouldbeagoodchoiceforthecharacterthat initiatesyoursearchforthem.Beingawizard, it

wouldntbetooweirdifhecoulduseanyofthetrinketsyoufindtohelpenhanceyourpowers.

3. Bilbo Baggins

Hereswherewehavetogetabitcreative,butitdoesmakesensesobearwithus.Atthispointin

thetimeline,BilboisinpossessionofTheOneRingandislivingsafelyandpeacefullyinTheShire.

ThemainplotdeviceinthegameisthatTalionispartwraithandweallknowwraithsareableto

sensethering.Itwouldbeinterestingif,asTalionspowersgrewandhebecamemorewraithlike

in nature, that he got glimpses ofBilbo.Bilbowould be occasionally taking TheRing out and

admiring it, aswe assume hemust do as it slowly corrupts him over the years and in these

momentsTalionwouldlosecontrolofhispowersandseevisionsofthehobbitinhishome.Itwould

remindsusof the larger storyandTalionspart in it.Wewouldntbe surprised ifaplot twist

involvedSauronknowinglyhavingahumaninfectedwiththewraithpowerstousehimasaspyto

locatethering,itwouldthenexplainhowtheNazgulzeroinonBilbospositionsoquicklyoutside

oftheirabilitytosenseit.

2. Aragorn

WithTalionspastasaRanger,thismakesperfectsenseforacombattutorial.Theintrotothegame

couldbeeitherTalion learningeverythingheknowsfromAragornorviceversa.Itdoesntneed

muchmoreofanexplanationthanthatandthe ideathatoneoftheseguys learnedeverything

theyknewaboutcombatfromtheotherwould lendTalionsometoughguycredibilityfromthe

offset.Outside

of

this,

flashbacks

to

his

Ranger

days

could

feature

encounters

with

the

king

of

men

inhiding,maybeevenconversational foreshadowingbetweenthetwoabouttheirrespectivefates.

Talion is clearly intended as a much darker version of the main trilogys heroic ranger and

comparisonsbetweenthetwowouldservetohighlighthowdifferentacharacterwithinTolkiens

worksTalionisintendedtobe.

1. Gandalf

Maybeanovertlyobviouschoiceforthetopspot,buthedbetheultimatebossbattlewouldnt

he?We can imagine it,Gandalf investigatingMordor after theeventsof TheHobbit,perhaps

alongsideRadagast,andmistakingyoufortheotherNazgul.Instantawesomefight.Ifyouwanted

togetmoreinterestingwithit,perhapsGandalfisfullyawareofTalionshalfandhalfnaturebut

decidesthatahumanwiththepowersofawraithisfartoodangerousaweaponforSaurontobe

abletoswaytohissideonceheregainsmoreofhispower.Afterall,ifhemanagedtosubvertthe

powerfulSarumanTheWisetodohisbidding,thensomebodyalreadyhalfNazgulshouldntbe

toomuchofaproblem to turn.Becauseof this,he couldpopup to tryandkillyouona few

occasionsandwithgoodreasontoo.Heknowsatthispointthatthingsareabouttocometoa

headandshouldTalionfallintotheDarkLordsgrasp,wedontfancytheFellowshipschancesina

fightagainstahardenedrangerwithNazgulpowersandbeyond.
