The Bayview Hunters Point Clinic is a nonprofit Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) created to provide excellent, integrated health and
wellness services with a focus on community residents using Medi-Cal. Located in the historic Arthur H. Coleman Medical Center, the Bayview Clinic brings services back to this center for Black health: a place where
African American doctors, dentists, ophthalmologists, therapists, pharmacists and midwives have provided wraparound healthcare for
residents of Bayview Hunters Point.
Dr. Arthur Coleman was Bayview’s first African American physician. He purchased the building in 1960 and served this community for more than 50 years. Recently the building was lost by Dr. Coleman’s family in a tax lien sale and purchased by a real estate developer with no knowledge of
its cultural and social significance to the community.
KRON-TV 4 recently ran this story on the Coleman Medical Center renovation: http://kron4.com/2018/02/05/hidden-history-african-
